So how do we feel about April time? Thinking about a visit from the UK, one of the only places handling it as bad as the US.

Also, any recommendations for somewhere to go before/after Vegas? I've been taking a look at LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver. I guess I shouldn't count on being able to go from the states into Canada? Just an extra moving part.

Also theres a sale on and the airlines are being flexible if I want to push it back. But there's no way I want to spend 10 days all in Vegas right? I'll want to hop somewhere else for a bit?

I actually booked tickets on a Black Friday deal for June, just have to see if international travel is cleared by then. There will be an announcement in a few weeks, I believe.

Too bad about the buffets though.

Well Virgin Atlantic sure made it sound like I'd be able to rebook my Black Friday business class tickets if the US still hadn't reopened, but whoops didn't mention I'd have to make to the price difference to the regular price, which is over seven grand. I was towards the end of the available window so they can't have honoured much if anything from that whole sale.

Broadly speaking, how is Vegas in mid November? I'm contemplating visiting for the big MTG event, it sounds like being double vaxxed, in good health and still wearing masks I shouldn't be too concerned?

Are the buffets still gone? Is the general Vegas experience compromised still?

And I'm thinking of hopping on from there to somewhere like Seattle, is it much trouble for a visiting tourist (UK) to hop on a domestic flight like that?

Only indirectly Vegas related, but where would be another good location in the US for solo travel? I'm thinking Seattle right now, I think it should be fine to fly to one, then the next a few days later on a domestic flight and back home from the second?

BizarroAzrael

I think I've got the outline of a plan together, would like to put it out there for people more familiar with things like US domestic flying.

I'll fly into I think either Seattle or San Francisco on a Wednesday, stay the night, do a little there and fly to Vegas the next day for the MTG event Friday-Sunday, and remain in Vegas until Wednesday-Thursday or so. Then back to Seattle/SF, see the sights and so on until flying back to London at the weekend. Sound okay? It's cheaper getting a return flight to the same place than two singles, and there aren't many direct flights to Vegas, to answer the obvious questions.

Any comments on the other destinations welcome, wanted to go to Seattle for a while, but I know it's the worst weather of the year in November.

Sorry to bump, I know this forum is understandably quiet these days, but if like to know how easy it is to get a domestic flight? Can I just rock up to the airport and get on the next one to where I'm going? Do I pay a premium ordering on short notice? I'm considering playing things by ear, maybe be open to extending in Vegas or whatever.

Man, I have a massive pile of Radisson points from work but it's about the same or cheaper to book through one of the comparison sites than use points with them! And I'd have to go through the bullshit of transferring points to a US account now!

I may actually go to the MGM Grand, except it's a bit further from the Convention Centre than TI. Is the monorail any good? I gather it's actually quite new so maybe it's managed to stay Goon-free so far? I notice Sahara also has it's own stop and that's another one on my radar, plus looks pretty walkable to the Convention center. Might be worth it just to save $13 per day I'm going there.

Neither MGM Grand or Treasure Island are close enough to the convention center to skip paying anything for transportation and go walk. You want the Westgate, Encore, or maybe Resorts World for that. Convention Center to Sahara is walkable on foot except at the worst of times, though their rooms last I saw are pretty small and garish and not for everybody.

The Monorail is locally a joke but moving people to the convention center is the one thing it does very well. No idea what frequency is like during the pandemic, as it used to have a line going out the station at big conventions with people packed in like sardines that you wouldn't do now. The city also has a bus system that services the convention center, with a route that passes right in front of it that connects between the airport on the extreme south end and downtown on the north.

Most people coming to Vegas are splurging cash and don't mind being overcharged for taxis or reserving limos because they're there to live beyond their means and pretend they're in a higher tax bracket than reality. If you're interested in doing Vegas cheap, just let me know what you're trying to accomplish because god knows locals are accustomed to pinching pennies and finding value.

Google Maps says 30 minutes from Treasure Island to walk around Wynn's golf course to the center, is the route not actually pedestrianized or something?

I'm not on a super tight budget but $13 a day for a monorail that only goes directly along the strip doesn't sound great, maybe not the end of the world though. Are the buses okay?

Yeah I just had a proper look at Sahara and completely see what you mean. A sharp discount came up on Booking.com with Four Queens for like 40 dollars a night so I've booked that cancel-able, may still look elsewhere as it's not an ideal location and the pool looks blah. Might spend a couple hundred more on Treasure Island, which is a better location for me and because of stories like that I've found. It's not being made easy for me though, Booking.com doesn't say if the price includes the resort fee, so I booked a cancelable start to see if I could find more messaging them about it and right there in the breakdown it shows that the fee is included. Could have made that easier for both of us guys. Might be able to save a bit more through TI's website as there's an offer for "Optional resort fees" if I don't mind not using the fitness center. Hopefully that let's me earn Radisson points but lol, their site links to the old, original Radisson Rewards sight and not the new Americas one they split off from it for some loving reason.

I gather from your posts that you seem very concerned with saving money during your trip.

While I absolutely respect and admire this mindset, Las Vegas (along with Disney World) is one of the few destinations in the US I wouldn't try to do on a strict budget, especially if it was my first (and only?) visit ever.

Stay on the Strip. Eat at a nice restaurant or two. Go see a show, or wrangle tickets to hockey or football. Even the touristy stuff is worthwhile -- check out the Atomic Testing Museum or the Neon Sign Museum. It won't be cheap, but Las Vegas is awesome, and it's worthy of spending some money to make things memorable.

There are ways to save money in Vegas, and this thread is a good resource for finding tips, but for a first-timer I'd recommend planning it like it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Or don't listen to me and do your own thing, but also

Edit: I re-read this and my post is absolutely oozing with privilege, and I apologize for that. It's just my experience that the "full Vegas experience" (even if you don't go overboard with gambling and boozing and whoring) is anything but cheap.

Eh, don't want to *waste* money, resort fees sound like some bullshit. I'm pretty happy to pay extra to stay on the strip etc. I really just booked Four Queens when the Booking.com app showed a sharp discount that was cancellable, figured I'd lock that in. If I were super concerned about money I wouldn't be going to the other side of the world to play a card game for ages 13 and up.

Just to update; I'm having a great time here. TI seems to have been the right choice, and walking to the convention centre takes me past Bagelmania.

Do the players club cards rig early grabbed in your favour? I signed up to TI's, used my free plays on a machine and won $81 without knowing what I did.

It's not completely specifically Vegas, but I'm looking to go around Halloween time and tack on a visit to New York (that is, the actual city and not the casino)

So a couple of things; first, is Vegas good for Halloween? I'm going to another Magic The Gathering/nerd event so expect there will be stuff connected to that, but does anything go on there generally?

Second, it crossed my mind I might save myself paying for a night in a hotel by taking an overnight flight from Vegas to NY, how would that be? With the time change it would be a really short night and I'd need to wait a bit to get into my NY hotel, so would be out and about, possibly with my bags, for a while on reduced sleep. Worth it?

Every time I've taken a domestic redeye in the US I've regretted it. Further, the Las Vegas airport currently has one of the highest rates of flight delays and cancellations, and if you're there at the end of the day and your flight gets boned there's a decent chance you have to stay at the gate overnight or go back into town and get a hotel. I'd personally just plan to stay the night and get a morning flight the next day, if you're looking to pinch pennies you could get a room at one of the cheap hotels near the airport for your last night but it may not be much less than where you're staying the rest of the time there. And even if you can't check in hotels will almost always hold your bags for you if your room isn't ready so don't drag them all over Manhattan on your first morning if you do elect to take the redeye.

Not to worry, I'll probably fly late and stay somewhere at JFK before heading into the city. The airport Radisson had a nice buffet breakfast last time I went which I hope is still there.

The event I'm going to is at World Market Centre, so it seems like it would make sense to stay Downtown, although the thread seems pretty down on staying around there? And also you mentioned cabs, cabs are better than rideshares in Vegas if for no other reason a lot of them have gone flat rate so there's no bullshit with routes, they get you straight to where you want to go and drop you off.

If you want cheaper options in broad strokes I think Miracle Mile around Planet Hollywood is the place to go.

The Luxor is depressing whether you compare it to newer luxury hotels or not.

That whole collection of themed Strip hotels built in the 90's has fallen on really hard times. See also: Excalibur, Treasure Island, Stratosphere.

And especially the Rio, which has the sad bonus of only being Strip-adjacent and a real pain in the rear end to get to without taking a cab. At least they still have Penn and Teller, I guess?

Excalibur has to be worst of the worse but I didn't think Luxor looked too bad? I gather there have been recent room updates, and I liked the Titanic exhibit they ran last year.

Got to jump to TI's defense though it might not be the most flash but I think it's a good option if you want to be on the strip but not quite spend what you will at the mid-Strip locations, and it's not so strongly themed as when it was built.

Rio didn't seem to be in great shape when I wandered around last year (after seeing Penn and Teller) with some closed attractions and empty space. I gather they are refurbishing with the hotel becoming a Hyatt pretty soon, but I don't know if that means any work will be done to the casino/resort.

If you missed it above, I actually tried to book at Linq, but the Caesar's reservation system stole 115 bucks from me without giving me a reservation.

I just want a clean place to sleep. Reviews on Trip Advisor and Google make it sound like every hotel under $300 on the Strip is full of black mold and falling apart at the seams, so it's hard to figure out where to stay.

Might try Park MGM next. But they charge for loving parking of course. Or I might call in to see what they can do about the Linq reservation and perhaps compensate me somehow for the inconvenience their system has caused me.

Well I was in TI about a year back and thought it was pretty presentable, cheaper and I think still does free parking (I wasn't driving myself but it comes up a lot in their promotional material)

If you search YouTube for a given hotel and room level you should find several recent reviews, but unless there's some big event pushing prices up you can definitely stay somewhere clean and presentable for much less than that on the strip. Or if you go back to looking at Downtown prices will be lower, I think there's more free parking (I believe the Downtown Grand has it and probably others)
