The new joker album is pretty good, but I think it would be WAY better without vocals. Apparently an instrumental version is going to be released, so that's a good thing. Nothing against vocals in dance music, but in this case, they're all rather poorly done and get in the way of the music.

Nah Like just released an EP of lush bass goodness on the young french label Soukouch Ethnik and now they have put together a great mix for Le Polygone Podcast. The podcast airs on some french college radio station and is a collaboration between the labels B.YRSLF division, Full Fridge, Get Flavor, and Soukouch Ethnik. Between these crews and Club Cheval I expect a lot of interesting bass music to come out of France in 2012.

I hope this isn't too spammy, but my EP on Soukouch Ethnik was released yesterday, you can download it for free if you wish:

It's sort of trappy/footworky bass stuff, has Nah Like and Umba remixes.

Thanks for the kind words about the mix everyone. I really appreciate it!

Edit: I like to read the title of the EP as RobotHugs instead of RoboThugs. Hope that is ok.

I think the robo thugs/robot hugs thing is funny, which is why I didn't put a space in there.

I like the new Burial a lot. Kindred and Ashtray Wasp both have a pretty weird structure, they almost feel like a bunch of sketches stitched together, but they still have a common theme running throughout and work as a cohesive whole. It definitely grows on you. A lot more expansive than Untrue.

If you're talking about the kind of stuff I think you're talking about, some of them may have been taken off some old Italo-Disco record, but just as likely they're straight off a DX-7 or more likely a Korg M1 which got a lot of love for piano lines back then.

any examples of a hardcore record that lifted a piano line from an italo tune? i don't think i've ever heard one, you'd expect there to be a few that sampled "i like chopin" or something.

Juke and trap are relevant as they're forward thinking, bass oriented electronic music, even if they're not technically UK bass. There is a big audience crossover, DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn have played sets on Rinse, and those trap beats that S-X made got a lot of play too.

I was really underwhelmed- I think part of it was the "main" release had vocals on everything and they weren't very good. There was an instrumental one too but they didn't push it as much.

This is cool though and I liked the Sega Genesis thing he did not too long ago.

Speaking of video game tunes, here's the Metal Gear Solid 3 theme song remix he did that's wayyyyy better than you'd think reading that description.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RadZTuZEKlM

I thought most of Joker's stuff from before the album was incredible and mind-blowing when it first came out. Digidesign, Gully Brook Lane, Purple City, Tron, Do It, were all really amazing and original tunes that are highlights of the original UK dubstep scene for me! I agree, the problem with the album was that the vocals were bad, but the instrumental versions didn't have enough to them to work on their own either. Anyway, I think it's kind of neat that he's sticking with that 140bpm halfstep kind of sound even though it's become very, very unfashionable in recent years.
