Why did they remove the assault rifle from the final game? It feels like an odd thing omission from the weapon roster.

iD probably looked at the precedent set by other games like Wolf3D and Blake Stone and Duke 3D and Quake II and agreed that it would be weird to start Doom with anything but a pistol.

Honestly a lot of why I insist on continuous unless actively forced to play otherwise is, the pistol in Doom is totally fine for fighting zombiemen and shotgun guys and imps with, but anything beyond that is loving miserable to try and use the pistol against

the first game kinda sucks though, go play TimeSplitters 2 to celebrate instead

TimeSplitters 2 is pretty much hands down the best console-only FPS ever and I would honestly put it pretty far up there in the overall rankings

One funny thing is that mappers are generally aware of this, like in Plutonia pistol starting is usually a nightmare but as you get farther in, they start throwing the SSG at you right at the beginning of the level, so a "pistol start" rarely ever actually involves using the pistol for anything.

I have no sympathy for Plutonia pistol starters, the game with more revenants than imps.

tbh as much as I like TS2, I think Future Perfect has aged considerably better. Going away from the Goldeneye-style aiming makes it feel less clunky, especially when fine tuning your aim

that said, I didn't wind up playing TS2 shortly after it was released and I imagine it was something of a revelation at the time

I really dug ep 1 of Nightmare Reaper. To anyone put off by the art, apparently tons of it is getting redrawn by professional artists. It's a fun game, and this is coming from someone who hates any kind of random generation or roguelike elements.

Is there a remake for System Shock 2 in the works? I played it back in the day, chickened out like a wuss, and never completed it. I keep trying to re-play it but it's quite frankly kind of janky, and I don't have enough nostalgia for it to push through the jank like I do Deus Ex.

It is very jank, but as far as I know nobody's planning to remake it. It's too bad - on the whole I think it's at least as good as the first, and the source audio quality could probably pass muster without much remastering. Improving its graphics and de-janking its quirkier systems (hello, weapon degradation) could streamline it a lot. If you go back to it, I'd disable weapon degradation and install the SHTUP texture upgrade pack, but leave replacement models alone.

It's not in dev hell, they just posted a trailer for cyberspace last month and the cool medical level demo was earlier this year. It's definitely not coming out any time soon, though. Maybe next fall if I had to guess.

That's System Shock 3. System Shock 1 remake is developed and published exclusively by Nightdrive. And I have my doubts about SS3. Since the hulabaloo about all the team leads leaving and the Tencent buyout there's been zero news.

How many games let you booze up and the result is you get loving wasted from like, a single can of beer?

At least in Bioshock it was generally wine and spirits you were glugging by the bottle.

There was a mod for Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) that significantly expanded on the effects of drugs/chems/alcohol. I remember that you could munch on stuff like 2CB and everything would become so bright and fuzzy and colorful. Different types of alcohol would get you properly smashed, as well.

It made getting completely hammered pretty fun, both stats-wise and visually.

So people have found this 3D walkthrough of a house and it feels like a Duke 3D usermap in how utterly bizarre it is.
https://www.redfin.com/KY/Louisville/8800-Blue-Lick-Rd-40219/home/84240362

the twitter thread has a ton of pictures, but nothing is quite as bizarre as actually exploring it. It was at one point a church, a business, but it's currently some sort of hellish warehouse for stolen goods, stuck in a state of stasis from 2014. There's remnants of a babtism pool in the upstairs area of all things, right next to organized and labelled stacks of porno DVDs. Truly this is a Duke Nukem map.
https://twitter.com/patrickashe/status/1320658920411697152

I really hope somebody actually makes this a map in a game. It's truly the strangest place I've seen in a long time.
