the twitter thread has a ton of pictures, but nothing is quite as bizarre as actually exploring it. It was at one point a church, a business, but it's currently some sort of hellish warehouse for stolen goods, stuck in a state of stasis from 2014. There's remnants of a babtism pool in the upstairs area of all things, right next to organized and labelled stacks of porno DVDs. Truly this is a Duke Nukem map.

I backed the System Shock remake with like $50 and I'm still holding out hope. The initial build got mired down in extreme feature creep. They had an entire 5-6 minute video just showing off how they were coding in freezing and shattering enemies, in a remake of a game that contained neither freezing nor shattering. Night Dive's team went fully off the rails and were packing in more and more queep until they pulled the plug and rebooted the reboot.

You just reminded me of an old pair of videos by Rob Ager where he attempted to plot out the layout of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining. He was apparently inspired to do this after hearing about a modder who'd tried to replicate the Overlook in Duke 3D, only to find so many architectural inconsistencies and anomalies that the guy had to fudge a lot of it just to make the virtual Overlook a consistent closed 3D space.

It was originally a church that was sold as a house which basically became the headquarters for an online fence. It explains the dual toilets and I'm pretty sure the room that is entirely a bath was used for baptisms.

Yeah it was a disaster at first. Seems like they're back on track though. I really dug the medical level demo from this year and cyberspace looks cool. Weapons look and feel good, sound effects were spot on. I was worried that a more modern control scheme might screw up the pacing but I played through the demo and the first level of the original and took my time and beat them around the same time. For a while the release date was this december but there's no fucken' way that's happening lol.

7 Days to Die does this big time and if you have more than like two beers you get dysentery after your screen stops blurring really bad and then you have to find a cure. It's not really worth the melee buff. It doesn't do the Dusk thing where your mouse wanders randomly though.

Barony has fountains that can mess you up and reverse all of your input but it's happened to me so many times that I am an expert at reverse wasd and mouse now.

I actually enjoyed The Suffering, maybe I'll do a spooky Halloween playthrough this year. I never did try the sequel but heard it was more of the same, more or less. It was the first console game I can remember using hard profanity and the way it leaned into it was sort of adorable, kinda like how Soldier of Fortune leaned shamelessly into the gore.

The sequel is a lesser experience but I still think it's fun as a horror themed third person shooter. It also takes place in the scariest city on earth: Baltimore.

I was busy Being charmed by the ghost running around the corner and peeking back out at you and then he got me!

The ghost is such a good little touch, he ties the entire 3 episodes together so well. There's even times in ep1 were he's standing off way in the distance on some inaccessible ledge keeping an eye on you. I don't think there's a single full map where is isn't hidden somewhere and it does a great job of rehabilitating Chernobog as a real antagonist instead of being an underwhelming boss fight.

One of the points of my hypothetical essay about Doom (which I will never do because I'm lazy), it's how Doom being labeled as a FPS is almost an error. It's at least a very different FPS, in comparison of what people understand with the term now. I say this because from the two core things you do in the game, moving and shooting, if I had to pick what is the most important one, I would say is -moving-.You are avoiding constantly enemy fire and moving consciously around them, in & out cover, or strafe circling or whatever, you can shoot better or worse, but movement is the no. 1 thing in Doom to do and be good to live on. That's what's different from modern FPS. I guess 'FPM' didn't have the same sex appeal as a term :P.

And Doom in special has a very slidey, slippery feel to movement. It's really the first thing a modern FPS player will notice if he plays classic Doom. Hell when I came back to Doom 1.5 years ago already, it was also the thing it clashed with me the most, I almost had forgotten about it. The genius of it, this movement with high inertia happens to be ideal for a game so focused on movement like Doom, because it means you cannot simply muscle-memorize your way into encounters, you have to be constantly on top of it.
Explanation: It's something it dawned on me half a year ago, while fighting a Cyberdemon. He got me a few times with the rockets and at some point I started to think "what the hell is happening here?!". It's when I noticed that sometimes I could swear I was pressing the same key the same amount of time to avoid a rocket, and sometimes I would eat the rocket instead of avoiding it. Why? Because the player "speed vector" was different each time, with the inertia you have, you cannot simply press a direction left key to move to that direction, it's going to depend if the inertia is pushing you left, right, up and left, etc. The difference is sometimes small (unless you were sprinting right and suddenly press left), but that small difference was the gap between avoiding a CB rocket by a hair of eating it.

In the same way Diablo is literally a roguelike running in real time, Doom is like smashing Gauntlet into Eye of the Beholder but replace throwing rocks at switches with shooting them.

It explains why Doom and Wolfenstein made excellent turn based RPGs that were both just Dungeon Master with guns.

"I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs."
Could the movement in Doom almost be considered like that of a racing game? It’s always made me feel as if I was on a hoverboard, or something like that. I tend to find myself drifting through corners, even doing it during open battles, and I most certainly could see there being a vehicle hud placed over the screen and not batting an eye at it.

I don't think Turok's movement is really comparable to Doom's? There is a (slight) acceleration curve, but you come to a complete stop immediately when you take your finger off the the key. Though it does have camera tilt when you turn.

Another neat thing is has (or, the remaster has, I can't remember if it's in the original), in contrast to other shooters with a lot of jumping, is coyote time. You can be fully off the edge of a platform when you hit jump and still get the jump, it goes a long way to making all that platforming bearable :toot:

You also jump your own height.
