What are some of the most gorgeous, detailed, or atmospheric custom Doom levels/megawads out there? I was always disappointed with the design of the original Inferno episode, and have looked for levels/megawads with a more dark, detailed Hellish feel. I remember a megawad for BD from a few years ago called Beyond Hell & Earth that had some cool-ish and creative hell levels, and I've liked really detailed dark stuff like that one map from DUMP 2 that was heavily reminiscent of Doom 64 (I love doom 64's atmosphere and design) and that one Giger-inspired map that was never finished. I'm not too concerned with difficulty or fair enemy/item placement so much as aesthetics. What else am I missing out on?

The "Doom: One" wad also combines the maps for each of the three episodes of the first game, with extra areas/enemies and an additional custom map for each ep. It's pretty great.

Lurdiak posted:Yeah. The sprites need to be resized at about 1.5x their size to reach the Doom64 proportions, and there's no way to do that on the graphics themselves without fuzzing them up something fierce. Guess I'm at an impasse for now. You could use one of the current HD/HQ Sprite mods for original Doom and mess with those instead, I'm sure they'd be more forgiving than the original sprites.

I remember reading an interview with a D64 designer who said that the weapon animations were overall toned down (regular shotgun doesn't animate when reloading either) along with a bunch of other poo poo being taken out, like Archviles and Revenants, because of the memory limitations of the cartridge.

Rookersh posted:the level design past Episode 1 gets really questionable. And Doom 2 just further exasperates the issue. Like the combat feels incredible, the movement is good, but the levels man. I left them kinda conflicted in a way I haven't been in the past replaying Doom. That's Sandy Petersen for you. Dude basically built Ep 2 and 3 of Doom in 2 months.

JustJeff88 posted:I discovered Brutal Doom not too long ago and have had a grand time the last some weeks playing through Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Evilution and Plutonia as well as Hell on Earth, the megaWAD created for Brutal Doom. I know that there is a link to Doomworld in the OP, but there are so many choices here that I'm not sure what I would enjoy. I started to play Plutonia 2, but I'm about 2/3 through it and probably not going to finish it as I'm finding it more difficult than fun. Could anyone suggest from personal experience any large (roughly the length of one of the "official" games) WADs truer to the original games and not frustratingly difficult? Doom the Way id Did. It feels like the originals and is very mod friendly.

That Doom movie is going to be worse than the one w The Rock. Anyway, one of the only things that slightly disappointed me about Doom 2016 was the lack of blasphemous Christian iconography. In old Doom there were crucified bodies and upside down crosses, direct references to the bible in level names, in addition to just the lakes of fire and pentagrams. Being subversive was one of the appeals of old Doom, and new Doom lacks that.

Not having a pc until the very late 90's, my first Doom experience was the heavily compromised Sega 32X version. The soundtrack is notoriously downgraded, but as a result makes the game more unnerving with its weird lo-fi sparseness. And encountering the Barons for the first time in E1M8 and immediately getting destroyed because I could never get used to the unintuitive strafing on the 32X was definitely a horror moment. I remember running and hiding in the corner of the pentagram and just sitting there with my chaingun, listening to the Baron's moaning in the distance and not wanting to move. So Doom was always a horror thing first for me. But that being said, I wasn't a fan of Doom 3 because of the comparatively glacial pacing.
