Speaking of MASH I would say Donna is pretty much Radar, Josh has a bit of Hawkeye in him, and Leo is Col. Potter.

Or more specifically Stanley Keyworth is Sidney Freedman. Another framing device, a heart-to-heart with your shrink. But yeah, I guess MASH did influence a lot of stuff. I think it really shows in Sorkin though.

drat this thread for making me want to do another rewatch. It's really rare for me. A lot of shows I love I just have no interest in rewatching. West Wing I've watched all the way through twice and many epsiodes in series one and two three or four times. My biggest problem is how morish I find it, especially near the beginning and season 7. It's the only drama where I can watch three or four episodes back-to-back. Two in the morning? Oh, OK one more episode.

There are some interesting tidbits involving televisionwithoutpity.com and Sorkin that resulted in that internet forum storyline.

http://bitchkittie.blogspot.com/2006/02/long-back-story-of-aaron-sorkin-west.html

Turns out Sorkin is kind of a troll. He had a dispute with one of the writers of an episode where they shared credit. He really can't let things go even years later.

quote:

However I was surprised that Sorkin even seemed to dredge up the old tiff with Rick Cleveland by having a character called "Ricky Tahoe" (See Cleveland is a city and Tahoe is a city...isn't Aaron clever?) who happens to be a hack writer who isn't as talented as his boss, the Aaron Sorkin-stand in, Matt Albie.

Hi

My friend got me hooked on this show in college, and I've loved it ever since.

One of my big problems with the show now though is I can't stop hearing Sorkin's favorite phrase: "You bet your rear end." He uses it all the time, in his movies, in the TV shows he wrote, everywhere. Now whenever I hear it it just grates on me.

Matthew Perry as a guest star amused me because the actor was referenced earlier in the show. So in the West Wing universe Matthew Perry also exists as an actor. Then again in Studio 60 (hey Matthew Perry again) there's a Bartlet campaign poster in one of the rooms, and Alison Janney is in playing herself... so in the Studio 60 universe etc, etc. MY SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF! I don't actually care about that stuff, it just amused me.

On an unrelated note does anyone else thing Sorkin is really heavily influenced by MASH? Particularly later MASH when it was more dramatic. He's a big fan of framing episodes with a "gimmick". Like an event through the eyes of a secondary character or as a letter to a relative and a few other things like that (many of these lifted directly from similar episodes on Sports Night). A lot of these are things that MASH did first and I've always thought it was a big influence on him. I guess Sports Night is a better comparison as it has a similar tone with regards to serious business in a sitcom.

MASH has done everything; I would be more surprised if he wasn't heavily influenced by MASH. Hell, even The Office is influenced by MASH. drat that was a good show. I would be willing to bet all the money in my pockets against all the money in your pockets that every major show runner in the US is intimately familiar with every episode of MASH.

Whenever my girlfriend randomly asks me what I'm thinking about and I'd normally say "nothing" because I'm thinking about something stupid like fantasy football or Kristen Bell and I don't want to talk about it, now I just say "Sam Seaborn." For some reason that is always a satisfactory and sufficient answer.

Probably my favourite tv show of all time.

I binged my way through this on the first sitting, I recently re-watched it with my girlfriend and there are so many fist pumping, stomach churning and tear jerking moments.

It seems like the trendy thing to do to claim that seasons 1-4 are infinitely better than 5-7, there were some amazing moments in the latter half of the shows run. Josh was always my favourite character so the Santos / Vinick campaign that afforded him a lot more screen time made me very happy.

I read that during Obama's campaign he was introduced by Jimmy Smits at a campaign event, whose character in the West Wing was based on a rising star from Chicago. META.

Matt Santos was from Texas--they mention it multiple times in terms of "flipping" the electoral math during the campaign.

Also, I'd agree that seasons 1-4 are vastly superior to 5-6, but the campaign in season 7 was fantastic. I would have had a tough time not voting for Arnie Vinick, and I'm a diehard liberal.

Two Cathedrals is the best hour of television ever. And there's a handful of other episodes - Bartlet For America, Celestial Navigation, 17 People, In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen - that are in the discussion. When The West Wing was on, there was never a better show, not The Wire or The Sopranos or AD or anything else. It wasn't on all the time, of course.

Not nearly enough love for Annabeth in the "seasons six and seven were actually pretty good" line of discussion. The Leo/Annabeth stuff on the campaign trail was freaking awesome and then welp.

This thread is probably going to prompt me into a rewatch. It's been awhile.

This thread seems as good a place as any to mention that there's a new Aaron Sorkin show coming up on HBO next spring, More As This Story Develops: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1870479/

Technically at this point it's still just a pilot, but Sorkin just won an Oscar for best screenplay so I'm guessing there's a 99.99% chance it goes to series. The premise sounds a lot more like Sports Night than The West Wing, with its behind-the-scenes-of-a-news-show premise (and a relationship between Emily Mortimer and Alison Pill's characters that sounds identical to Dana and Natalie), but it's still definitely my most anticipated new show of 2012, even after the Studio 60 debacle.

While I do like The West Wing, I think that the optimism really grated after a while. My main problem is that nobody on the show stopped and asked whether the policy was good or not; people would pass something and say what's next. It never analyses the implications of the policies, which makes it feel very detached. The Wire was a pretty good way to show the implications of federal policies and how they rarely help those who need it most.

In keeping with tradition there was a fairly liberal interpretation of history outside the US, and I hated Lord Marbury or whatever his name was- it's like every British cliche dialed up to 11. Also I didn't like the death penalty episode just because nobody pointed out the obvious; if you execute people you will also execute innocent people.

That's not really relevant. You can say the same about any punishment. e.g. If you jail people you can also jail innocent people. Honestly I'd rather be wrongly executed than wrongly given life imprisonment. Especially that after about a year or so in the American prison system I would have probably lost my humanity. Life isn't an numbers game, life isn't better just because you reach the bigger number, quality matters as much as quantity.

The new players suddenly introduced in that episode were a bit jarring. Of course it's a given that there are many more people working behind the scenes of the west wing that we'd never meet, and the press office hasn't been the focus or fleshed out much, but after five years of a show that consists almost entirely of people striding around handing off envelopes, we would have caught a glimpse of people who interact with CJ directly and constantly.

Of course, that's just a minor complaint in a wholly lousy episode.

I just suspend disbelief at who we do or do not see. It's never stated what happens to Sam after he loses his House race, and we do see that he at some point ends up as a lawyer in California, but it's suggested that he still works at the White House, doing policy stuff.
