It was developed mainly for consoles. The PC version was subcontracted out to a well known 3rd party. I think Tecman epxlains this better, somewhere in that massive (wonderful) OP.

This is just one of the many reasons to love Deus Ex. You can do something 20 times, convinced it's the right way to do it, then on the 21st playthrough, you figure something out like this that changes everything all over again.

PC version of Deus Ex doesn't feel console-y in any way, so I've got nothing to complain about. :D

Not at all. I'd also love it if this game was really successful and caused other, larger companies to realize that maybe games that aren't brain dead corridor shooters with instant shoot-duck-heal-shoot gameplay can be successful, too.

Yeah, small touches like typing in passwords (:neckbeard:) rather than selecting them shows the PC isn't just an afterthought. The game does feel as it was made and ported with genuine love behind it.

Indeed.
I wish that you could type passcodes on door locks with your numpad instead of clicking on them though.

Tec man, that's some dedication. I do think it reflects how Deus Ex has so much coverage in the media though.

Honestly, its almost a bit too much... I've started to see boring level design (up in the floof levels) and I'm starting to question my interest in the game.

Also the green man discount... its as if Eidos Montreal doesn't trust in their shipped game.

Please talk me out of these negative thoughts. I love Deus Ex.

I don't think there is a boring level in the leak. The levels are expansive and have multiple routes to take to complete objectives. Not to mention there is a lot of ways to creatively alter the environment to get places, like stacking boxes and so on. There is a mini-sidequest at Sarif HQ with a lot of level crawling that you gotta a little more perceptive than usual to complete.

Generally you can tell pretty early on if there is bad level design.

It's really awesome how you can re-enact the Terminator if you want, and you can get augs that pretty much let you do that, just take people's fire while mowing them down with no recoil. Needs some 80s style music.

Who has played with the highlights turned off? i figured the highlighting would become invisible as I played, but I noticed that I was constantly looking for glowing objects. Playing it again without was much more rewarding and immersive. It felt kind of like locating objects was a part of the challenge, and the visual clues aren't too subtle either.

I did notice that the highlights were a lot less visible when you're the one playing the game, but I do like playing it better with them off. Like poptart fairy said, it makes finding things more rewarding and the game is more immersive that way.

I prefer to turn the highlighting off as well.

Another chapter comes to an end, by the way. The last issue (#6/6) of the Deus Ex comic is out today. And, well...

It's the worst one so far, at least in my opinion - just pure action cheese, some forced drama I didn't care about one bit, no substance... aside from one reveal that's probably a game-related spoiler. Good riddance. Once I find some time I'll make an updated version of "themanyfacesofadamjensen".

Also, we should get to hear some cool stuff tomorrow, just to remind people:

How do video games incorporate real-life science into their storylines, weapons, and characters? This talk will provide fascinating insight into how "sci" was used to create the "sci-fi" in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, one of the most highly anticipated games of 2011. Mary DeMarle, lead writer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Eidos Montreal) and Will Rossellini, CEO of Microtransponder and consultant on the game, discuss how they created a realistic future vision for transhumanism and a world where mechanical augmentations have changed the fate of the human race.

It isn't easy screwing up the face of a single character that much in a single comic. I especially like the one where he turned into a dumpy 50-year old when he was holding a gun.

So, coming from someone who can't play the leak (I'm on a Mac), what, besides just unlocking the computer for access, can you get or do during the hacking minigame? I see several nodes that don't make immediate sense and I don't think it was ever explained.

I guess they figure if he looks mad enough all the time they don't need to draw him with the same face. It probably frees the artist up to copy from various stock images.

I believe they can also have effects on your current hack. Basically there are 2 types of special nodes, not just the ones you mentioned.
IIRC The nodes are labeled:
Registry: this is where you start
Directory: these are like blank stepping stones
Bridge: these are the things that make it multidirectional or one way

Function: these can be all sorts including "transfer"ing node strength, reducing all nodes strength ("clearance"), "soften" weakens adjacent nodes, I believe there is a "spam" as well that delays the trace, though I could be wrong
Datastore: as you said gives xp or hacking tools

The different functional nodes confused me a little, since the I dont think the in game hacking tutorial expanded on them at all, but they were kind of self explanatory.

Hey Tecman, I know you're pretty into the various channels regarding this game; what's the best way you can think of to complain about that incredibly racist character (that we know about) to maybe get it cut or rerecorded for the final product? It might be too late now, but I'd honestly feel neglectful if I didn't try.

Tong is a good character! Just because you don't like the dialogue and voice acting isn't a reason to get rid of it.

I hope the game's nowhere near as ham-fisted as that video. I don't really see the whole morale dilemma of letting people with missing limbs walk or use their arms again even if it does make them functionally stronger than someone with their original body-parts.

The drug part of it is the only really seedy part. I hope the game doesn't go down the route of a heavy-handed message about augmentation and how it's evil or something like that.

If augmentations on the level of HR, let alone DX1 exist the religious shitstorm will be immense.

Republican Vampire
Jun 2, 2007

In the leak it's made clear that most augmentation is voluntary, you find homeless people who have chronic conditions that would benefit from augs but can't afford them, or who have lost their jobs because they refuse to be augmented.

On top of that, everyone who gets augmented suffers from rejection, which causes neurological damage and death and the only treatment is a drug that causes dementia and psychosis. So it's not as black and white as that.

The end of the video mentions 'We've hacked their site' If you go to https://www.sarifindustries.com surfing around a bit should bring up a similar hacking interface to in game, and you can unlock a few images with information about Jensen's more questionable augs.

Even apart from the drugs the fact that you're surrendering your limbs for a product thats going to be out of date in 2 years, and solidly obsolete by the time nanotech rolls out is worrying. Sorry you cant get the 2028 model, you have the wrong types of holes drilled into your spine.

I mean, think what kind of extended warrenty deal you'd have to get on your eye augs, the rest of your life? Whats the company's tech support like? What happens if they go under?

Also, theres the fact that anyone with like, a 2/3x human strength steel arm is basically carrying a semi-concealed weapon attached to them all times, even without the optional hidden blade upgrade you could pretty easily crush someones non-augmented skull.

Imagine being in a bar where some old war vets had too much to drink, the bouncer comes to escort him out and whoops, he's just put his arm through the guys face. Why bother hiring non augmented bouncers anymore? Why even let augmented people on the premises anyway? Operating your 80mph robot legs while intoxicated would be auguably just as bad as drink driving.
