I think it has displayed an add twice in the past 3-5 years. Annoying, but not awful. I'm kinda stuck with it as it's the only thing I know about that can expand old stuffit and binhex archives.

Oh that's good to know! I'll use it when needed for those, I occasionally decompress those formats as well.

I’d say use the iMac for a little bit, and if all goes well then stump for a M4 Mini. The value makes it not worth messing around with outdated stuff unless you get a particular kick out of it.

Yeah, this. Tinkering with old stuff is fun, but for "production use" you really want something thats up to date and secure (as secure as you can be).

I went and bit the bullet. Signed up for SetApp, seems like too good a deal to pass up. Lots of apps that I've wanted amounted to hundreds of dollars to buy individually. Though I would like to purchase them as individual licenses, it's just not feasible for me.
Let us know how your experience goes, any gotchas or annoyances or whatever.

Been tempted by it for some apps that I use that had paid upgrades for the latest version...but in the end figured I only really need those and just paying for the one time licenses made more sense than an ongoing SetApp sub.

Plus the ARM Macs will generally just be shitloads faster and nicer to use.

If you already have the apps you want, then yeah, it makes sense just to upgrade them piecemeal. For me, though, I'm just getting back into the Mac ecosystem from a long stint on Linux. I don't mind paying for good software, I just don't have infinite money.

So far it's pretty nice. A little overwhelming with 250 apps available to just download. The SetApp app itself is okay. Weird extra rounded corners that don't fit the rest of the system, but it's MacPaw, so I'm not surprised.

So far, I've tried:

  • CleanMyMac 👎 - It found a bunch of cache to clean out, but nothing amazing. The app also was giving me warnings that my CPU was heating up because of an app... itself.
  • Yoink 👍 - I won this in a raffle from before, but it's really great, especially with how deficient Finder is with moving stuff between different parts of the filesystem
  • DisplayBuddy 👍 - If you have some external Dell monitors, this can help it not look like poo poo
  • HoudahSpot 👍 - If you need to find specific files, this tool can find them -- limited use for me, though
  • Dropshare 👍 - I setup an S3 bucket to share files with people quickly. This is great.
  • Antinote 😑 - Nice, but I already use the Notes.app and the features I get from it are more than enough for my needs
  • Default Folder X 👍 - I honestly wish the file dialog had some of these features. Unbelievable how much better it is opening and saving files
  • BusyCal/BusyContacts 😑 - Great functionality. Just more calendar and contact organizing than I need
  • CommanderOne 👍 - I prefer ForkLift in lieu of this, but very reminiscent of Midnight Commander and company.
  • Trickster 👎 - Neat idea, but it doesn't seem to work well, nor do I find myself going back to files that I edited frequently enough that a shortcut like this app would be useful
  • Screenfloat 😑 - Nice execution, mediocre annotation tools.
  • MarginNote 👎 - Sounded neat. Ended up crashing trying to insert a node
  • ForkLift 👍 - Great dual-pane file manager
  • Bartender 😑 - Giant-rear end setup windows where you can't get to the buttons; Ice already has ~80% of the important functionality and 0% of the cost
  • Lungo 😑 - It works. Just like all the other tools that secretly call caffeinate
  • Pareto Security 👎 - Doesn't even do anything other than list where you could fix some of the security options on your Mac. Can't detect if your TimeMachine vault is encrypted, which the settings interface clearly shows, and complains that since I don't have it on all the time that it's broken
  • Clop 😑 - Slicker ImageOptim that supports ffmpeg for compressing videos. I use it occasionally.
  • Cleanshot X 👍 - Better screenfloat. Integrates with several other tools in the repo, too.
  • Pixelsnap 😑 - Would have been amazing if I were still a web developer or had any design skills whatsoever. Cleanshot can use this
  • Downie 👍 - Surprisingly nice yt-dlp front end
  • Squish 😑 - Generally okay, has more options than Clop, none of them I need
  • RocketTypist 👍 - Kind of torn between Espanso and this. This is far easier to edit and manage. Epsanso is free.
  • Soulver 👍 - If I didn't have pcalc, I would use this. I had an old version ages ago, and still have version 2 on my iPhone. Great calculator app. Has ✨AI✨

Overall, I'd say it was worth it for my use-case. There are a lot of mediocre apps, but a fair number of real gems, and from where I'm sitting, it'd be ~$230 to buy the ones I like and use.
