I would really like to upgrade to the new release of Big Sur (because of the sudo exploit,) but I am very wary of the reported issues with external displays - I basically only ever use my macbook docked, and this would really interfere with my work. Is there a way to downgrade to before the update if something goes wrong? I'm on an M1 Air.

Which version of Big Sur are you on? v.11.0.1 was the last update that didn't gently caress over external monitors..

The only current method of downgrade is either wipe and restore to an earlier Time Machine save point, or make a full clone, wipe, then install 11.0.1 from scratch and bring everything back from the clone with Migration Assistant.

It's rather frustrating that it's currently impossible to create a bootable Big Sur backup of an M1 machine (you can with Intel, though..)

If you didn't keep a copy of the 11.0.1 installer.. oof

External monitors are working fine for me under 11.1, so maybe I'll just do a time machine wipe/restore if I run into trouble. I don't have a copy of the ARM installer though.

e: Bit the bullet and I personally am not having any issues with 4k60hz, yet. I'm on a Displayport 1.2 monitor here though, I use a 4k60hz HDMI2.0 monitor at my parents' place that has been really cantankerous with outputting at that format consistently, hope I won't see any issues there either.

So this is a weird one, but here goes: have any of you experienced MacOS killing your internet?

I have a Mac Book Pro 2017 or something running Big Sur and the weird part is that anytime I get it out of sleep mode and it connects to my internet at home it seems to kill it and I have to reboot my PFsense machine.
At first I thought it was a coincidence but my internet is otherwise very stable.

No. And I have a pfSense edge device running as well. On the rare cases I've lost Internet access altogether, it's almost always one of two things. The root AP of my mesh network needs to be rebooted or the issue is on Comcast's side.

Is this every device affected or just your MBP?
Can you still access local assets such as your pfSense box?

You may want to look at your logs from pfSense and see if anything stands out. It's possible there's some error condition you're triggering that locks up the adaptors or something?

I have experienced some weirdness with wireless where I need to turn off and back on my wireless adapter on the MBP though. This is on my 2018 MBP, but it too is an extremely rare occurrence and I haven't been bothered enough to hunt down the issue.

Wanna know what's really annoying? When your tax software tells you 'we won't be able to help you next year' unless you upgrade to Catalina.

Maybe if this lovely software can get me a refund big enough to pay for a machine that has something newer than Catalina, assholes?

(Just kidding, but sheesh, it's like Apple is leaning on its vendors to force people to upgrade.. it's like they want to quietly erase Mojave from existence)

Is this still relevant article for getting most of the GNU Linux cli tools on macOS CLI?

https://www.topbug.net/blog/2013/04/14/install-and-use-gnu-command-line-tools-in-mac-os-x/

It's kind of old so I wanted to ask. I've got a fresh install of Catalina on a work machine and I'd like to ditch apple's FBSD/old tooling as it makes scripts run weird.

Mmmm, yeah, except that homebrew/dupes was deprecated and a lot of those commands have become part of homebrew.. and some utilities like binutils get installed into usr/local.

Edit: and Apple adopted zsh as the official shell in Catalina so maybe don't install that from the list

Edit 2: you wanna use reheated Linux scripts for macOS?

We do a lot of deployments with ansible and we have some wrapper scripts. Yes, I can use a VM or a docker container and replicate the env but I guess I'd just rather get something native.

I found this:
https://github.com/fabiomaia/linuxify

And it works great including not using depreciated brew flags, and exhausts a file I can source in my zshrc that fixes the paths.

Mainly the major pain points are old bash and weird BSD find behavior.

Is tehre any way to change the location of the screenshot popup if you do a CMD-SHIFT-3/4?

Press cmd-shift-5 and you can just drag the palette around by the area near the X widget on the left. It will remember where you placed it.

Has anyone noticed disk images being super slow in Big Sur?

I just downloaded LibreOffice, and it took like 3 minutes to copy 700mb of stuff. diskimages-helper was using 93% of the CPU.

BlackMagic disk speed test seems to report speeds as normal but I've also noticed it takes while for my 2017 to boot up. planned obsolescence

I'm having a problem with screen sharing- I upgraded my 10+ year old Mini with an M1 the other week. It's primary purpose is a media machine and it's hooked up to my TV. For years I occasionally control it via screen sharing from my MBP by simply going to the Mini in the sidebar of my finder and hitting the screen sharing button.

Unfortunately since I upgraded, the new Mini does not show up on my MBP's sidebar. I have to VPN in the finder to get screen sharing to work. I have screen sharing turned on in the Mini's system prefs, and Remote Management turned off. Is there something I'm missing?

That sounds weird, are both Macs on the same WiFi network? What kind of router?

I just tested from my aging Mojave (10.14.6, latest Security Update) laptop to an even older rMBP running Big Sur (11.3 Beta 2) (assuming you have Big Sur on your M1 Mini) and everything looks fine.

Screen Sharing only enabled, and found the Big Sur Mac by clicking on the Network icon in the the sidebar.

What are you running on the MBP, Catalina or BS?

GATOS Y VATOS
Aug 22, 2002

Same network, using an Eero mesh network, both running the latest Big Sur (my MBP is an early 2015 model). I'll give both machines a reboot and see if that changes anything.

edit: updated the Eero router and restarted both macs. I can now access screen sharing by going into the Network in the side panel and selecting my Mini, so at least there is that.

Having major issues with WiFi that were not fixed by the update. My internet connection works fine at first, then after a few hours it starts dropping packets and loading pages is glacial or nonexistent. It's fixed by a restart. Anything I should try? I'm assuming this is a software issue.

I got a free year of apple tv from the purchase of a mac. It says its a hub that consolidates other streaming services into one place, aside from being its own service with its own content. How do I get my netflix, hulu, amazon, and disney plus shows to show up in the apple tv app?

Netflix doesnít hook into it unfortunately.

Iím not sure about the Mac but on the Apple TV itís all done automatically. When I load the TV up it shows the last shows / series Iíve watched and has the next one ready to go.

Itís just a shortcut though so itís not native in the app it self. When you click a show it just loads the app and plays the show or whatever.

Yeah I think that's talking about TV the (paid, for the Plus stuff) service, are you sure it didn't call it TV+?

The TV app on the Mac is just a single source and doesn't interoperate with any of the other services like Netflix or Amazon. But if you have an actual TV device on your TV, all those services show up on it as apps (along with TV the app) and their libraries all blend together in search results.

And yeah, in that context Netflix used to interoperate natively, like a global app-level search would give you Netflix results along with everything else, but they had some contractual slapfight and now it's a bag-on-the-side app you have to browse separately.

AFAIK it's the only one though, the rest all fit in seamlessly.

I have like half of my 2016 MBP's drive currently occupied by "Other" data. I updated to Big Sur and it's now completely hosed.

I've cleared time machine local snapshots and done a disk utility first aid run. Grand Perspective also just labels this all as "Misc".

It currently won't allow me to update xcode because there's not enough space and I need to do that. What should I do?

This might be a dumb question, and the answer seems obvious, but I wanted to make sure. Can I have multiple iCloud accounts using different user accounts on the same Mac? Put simply, if I make my mom an account on my Mac and let her sign into iCloud on it, is there any risk of the copious tentacle porn in my iCloud account making its way onto hers?
