Things has always seemed like a nice app, so you might want to check that out.

Is there some way to get Gmail notifications appear in Notification Center, and have those notifications redirect to Gmail on the web? The alternatives don't work: Mail.app only syncs Gmail properly one-way, and Airmail crashes when I try to add my non-Gmail account.

OneNote is coming to Mac!

I'll still take a look into this even if a combo of OmniOutliner and simple text notes takes in Dropbox care of most of my note needs these days.

Quoting to mention that I use 1password and overall love it, but holy hell is the android app bad. As mentioned it doesn't auto fill (which already is disappointing but liveable) and the app always, always takes about 15 seconds to open.

Relief is finally coming on June 10th!

Got it, thanks. It's actually in the Mission Control settings.

Speaking of which, how does Mission Control still exist in its current form on MacOS? The design of everything on it is at least 10 years old. No flat design anywhere. Did they forget it's there?

Please don't remind Apple that Mission Control exists. I don't want it to be "improved" like Disk Utility.

It's loving ridiculous to be at the point where people look at macOS updates and say to themselves 'I wonder what will loving break this time around.'

Hair Force One needs to crack down.

TIL I wasn't the only one having problems with High Sierra and external monitors. It was a coin flip to see if my Mac would detect its external monitor upon wake, and if it didn't detect, I had to reboot.

I definitely have had issues with my MBP and external monitor on High Sierra. My Mac would not reliably detect the external monitor upon waking from sleep on High Sierra, and it required a restart to fix. 10.13.4 seems to have solved it for me though.

Dude the new safari shut down unblock saying it slows it down. Forreal??

From the Safari Extensions page (emphasis mine):

quote:

Important: In this book, Safari extensions refers to the legacy .safariextz-style Safari extensions. Developer-signed Safari extensions are not supported in Safari 12. Safari extensions distributed in the Safari Extension Gallery are deprecated, and Safari 12 is the last release to support them. Safari by default will turn off Safari extensions using canLoad. Instead, use Content Blocker extensions. New submissions to the Safari Extensions Gallery will be accepted until the end of 2018.

Use Safari app extensions to add features to the Safari browser. To convert your Safari extension to a Safari app extension, or to start developing Safari app extensions, see Safari App Extensions.
I should look into Firefox sooner rather than later.

In a similar vein, I will recommend Aerial, which lets you use the Apple TV screensavers on your Mac

Any ‘must have’ apps / programs?

I just bought Soulver, OmniFocus, Paprika, Tweetbot, and TextMate.

It’s my first time on a Mac so I’m still learning about my options.

Alfred or LaunchBar if Spotlight doesn't do it for you. Drafts is also nice to have on the Mac as a companion to the iPhone app.

My work wants me to download videos from youtube, they suggest a crappy site with actual porn adds on it, is there (hopefully free) software that will do it well, preferably without porn? I've looked at a couple of things that were basically very dodgy looking adware versions of the crappy website, what is the good thing?

VIDL is a new, free Mac app that is a GUI wrapper around youtube-dl.

Catalina will continue to 'sux dix' because they're gonna save most of its bug fixes for 10.16, to be announced in about a month at WWDC.. and then introduce a boatload of other bugs with it. Apple software integrity these days is approaching the level of a slow motion Aristocrats joke.

Also you shouldn't blame Tim Nook, you need to point the finger at Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, otherwise known as Hair Force One. He's the one who signs off on all Apple software releases.

It's fun listening to the Appleverse podcasts where the middle-aged, upper-middle class white dudes walk up to the line of "Fire Craig Federighi" but won't cross it because they're terrified of having their media access revoked

Catalina is bad because Mac software hasn't been a high priority at Apple for some time now, and the yearly release schedule for macOS doesn't make sense. Perhaps the ARM Macs and the 'rona causing everyone to go back to their Macs will spark a Mac renaissance at Apple in the near future.

Is there a go to method for Time Machine backup to a NAS? I've done a couple of hacky implementations and thought I'd see if there was an agreed upon method that works for a good ol' fashioned SMB/NAS setup that isn't on a propritary platform.

Setting up a Time Machine share in unRAID was one of the easiest things I did while setting up my server

I switched to MS Edge from Safari recently on the Mac. In addition to having a not-poo poo UI and uBlock Origin, Activity Monitor reports that Edge uses less memory than Safari when I have <10 tabs open.

I use Firefox full-time now that I'm on an Apple Silicon Mac. I don't have to care anymore about the incremental battery gains or decreased fan noise I'd get with Safari on AS.
