Between Parallels and VMware Fusion, what's the preferred virtualization software? I'm (probably) not looking for gaming or anything super intensive, most likely just Solidworks stuff at most (I'm running a 2011 MBP, the high end 15" model).

Also- do either of them have compatibility issues with Lion? I'm on Snow Leopard right now but I'm looking to upgrade soon.

So I just bought a new shiny 15" MBP and immediately installed lion on it. Once that was done I attempted to install steam.

When I attempt to load steam it goes through the updating steam (which downloads about 37megs worth of data) then just starts the download process again.

Anyone have any ideas?

Try deleting clientregistry.blob?

I have no idea what that means, but if you link me to something I am sure I can figure it out.

Okay, navigate here in Finder:

/Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/Steam

note: in Lion this folder is hidden by default, so open up Terminal and post this:

code:
chflags nohidden /users/[Username]/library
(where [Username] is your account name)

There should be a file called "Clientregistry.blob". delete that and then reopen steam. It usually fixes a lot of stuff.

Anyone know why the start-up sound when I turn my laptop on would stop playing? I picked up a new 15" MacBook Pro a couple weeks ago and for some reason about two days ago it stopped. It doesn't bother me too much, since it was kind of annoying, but I'm curious as to how it got turned off. I never changed any settings, and from what I could find it's not that easy to disable.

The only culprit I can think of is I have a bad stick of RAM and the machine will crash about once a day. I plan on replacing the RAM but it will be a few days until I get home.
Is your machine muted? all of my Macs don't play the startup sound if the sound's all the way off.

I know this sounds like a hardware question but I figure it's more software; if I leave my portable external hard drive switched on and hooked up to my system, will it become corrupted, especially when switching my computer on and off daily? I use it as my Time Machine and only switch it on when OS X bugs me that I haven't run Time Machine in a week, and it might be more convenient if I have more frequent backups, no?

As long as you're actually shutting down the system and not yanking the hard drive out or anything, you should be fine.

is the hard drive not showing up at all or can you just not write to it? if the latter, it's probably formatted as NTFS, so you have a couple options.

The OS 9 to OS X switch was a unique situation. Yeah, probably the most drastic change is going to be a new file system, which apparently is rather needed.

What does everyone think about full disk encryption software? It looks like the two options now are PGP Whole Disk Encryption (now owned by Symantec) and upgrading to Lion to use Filevault's full disk encryption (I'm still on Snow Leopard). Aside from PGP costing extra, are there any pros/cons to either of them? In the past it looks like there have been compatibility issues when Apple sent out an update that broke PGP's firmware integration, but recovery disks took care of it.

Filevault 2 is pretty seamless, and aside from requiring the recovery partition and having to login before most stuff boots up I haven't really noticed any difference with it on.

I think you can download trial versions of Photoshop from Adobe's website and then just use your old serial to activate it. As for Word, I don't think Microsoft has download links so you're kinda sol there (there are trial versions floating around but I think they fall under :filez: ).

There is no good reason for this.
