I'm wondering if Lion will slow down my Macbook--I can't find a definitive answer. Right now it's running 10.6.8. It has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 4 gigs of RAM. I ordered it end of 2008. I mainly want to update because some of my apps want me to, and I want to get iCloud set up.

Thanks to all above.

Right now for RAM I have two 2GB sticks. I'm confused as to why this page thinks I'm maxed out on RAM (or is that 4GB number just the max amount you can order with a new notebook from apple?). Can I not conceivably just replace one of the 2GB sticks with, like, a 4GB stick? And, finally, what's the best type and/or place to get more RAM, assuming it's possible. EDIT: I'm in Canada. Newegg?

I'm looking for a app that can limit my time on specific websites. For example that i only can waste my time on SA for a hour per day. Would be nice if it could count my time on all other sites too so i can see how much time

Any suggestions?

Try this one.

EDIT: Oh wait, for tracking you might want something like Rescue Time.

I don't actually use either of those, to be honest. I just use focus booster when I want to sit down and work for two hours or whatever.

Wow, huge thank you for mentioning Moom. I just bought it and already it's one of the most satisfying $5 I've ever spent.

This post introduced me to Moom, and, curious, I checked it out. Then I, too, spent $5 and am extremely pleased right now. So I guess I'm seconding the thanking of the original posters as well as Martytoof.

I'm getting scary lines on my monitor(s). :ohdear:

Note that it only displays this problem when one or more external monitors are attached, though it displays the problem on all monitors. Some windows are free of it (e.g., when I went to look up system information, it was free of the lines).

Rebooting did not fix it.

I'm on a 2012 Macbook Pro Retina, 15", 2.8 GHz Intel Cor i7, with 16GB RAM. Graphics appears to be NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

I'm all backed up, and I have AppleCare, but this is super bad timing :( What can/should I do?

Tried letting the laptop rest awhile? Graphic artifacts like that usually are a result of a GPU running too hot / too close to its upper temp limit.

Just tried that for 30 ish minutes. When I boot it up, if no external monitors are attached, the screen looks fine, although there are hints of the vertical grey bars at the top, but only for a few seconds. Attach a second monitor, and they're everywhere. I guess I'll try turning it off and letting it rest for tonight.

I don't mean to jump the gun, but your GPU shouldn't have an issue just powering multiple monitors unless you're doing some other GPU intensive thing at the same time.

Is it particularly hot in the room you're using the computer in? Ambient temperature can make quite a difference. If that's not it you might have a bad GPU and you may need to get that fixed.

Binary Badger posted:

That's going to be a logic board change then, GPU isn't socketed.

Thanks and thanks.

I guess I'll take it in. I'm within a year of purchase and I have Applecare. Is there anything I should do before taking it in? Does anyone know how long a repair like this would take, and/or is it likely to get worse or totally screw me over if I wait a few days?

Just upgraded yesterday. Mavericks found 20GB of hard drive space :)

Only bug / annoyance is that for whatever reason my Finder scrolling randomly stops working. Googling tells me apparently other people have had this issue as well, with both Finder and Mail. The fix is to restart Finder, but that only works for a short while, so in Finder I've been using the scroll bar manually.

Argh the "no more magic mouse/keyboard trackpad scrolling with Mavericks" now includes the Finder and preview, and presumably also Mail for other people reporting the issue.

This is totally evil and selfish, but a part of me hopes this is happening to enough people and/or someone at Apple so that it gets fixed in an update.

What's the go-to for converting a Word file (.docx, but I could save it as something else) to PDF, while still retaining hyperlinks and not getting an insane file size? I'm willing to Print to PDF or whatever, then manually make the file smaller and add things like links back in, but I'd prefer not to. Edit: I'm on 10.9
See the few posts below this.

Word lets you save as a PDF, which seems to preserve hyperlinks. Not sure about filesize but it's worth a shot.

Pivo posted:

Doesn't MS Office have a Save to PDF feature now? Or maybe that's just on Windows. *That* should maintain hyperlinks.

Any kind of print function won't ... that kind of data isn't in the print stream unfortunately ... (I used to work in document services).

You could always mark up the PDFs after the fact. :/

Yep, I'm an idiot. Word now does have a Save as PDF function and I have failed to use it like a dolt. I thought print to PDF was still all that was available, and as Pivo mentioned, printers don't care too much about links. Just wait until hyperlinks on physical paper do work. Oh-ho-ho.

Using save as PDF, filesize wasn't really an issue, either. I had a 30 page doc with some images here and there, and the change in size was 1.1 MB --> 1.4 MB. Not bad at all.

Thanks guys.

I have a question about Macs and keyboard indicator lights...

I'm thinking of ordering a custom keyboard from WASD and/or Unicomp where the legend reflects some key re-mappings I've done / want to do:.
  • With Karabiner, I've re-mapped my caps lock key as a hyper key (⌘⌥⌃⇧).

  • On a new full keyboard, I'd want to re-map the num lock / clear key as something similar, but which stays active after being pressed (e.g., press it and it activates a bunch of macros in Keyboard Maestro, press it again and it de-activates those macros—still thinking on this, though).
What I'm trying to figure out are my options for the indicator lights. Namely: I'd like the caps/lock hyper key to still flash when it's pressed down, and I'd like the new num lock to indicate when it's active or not. With WASD in particular, this could be pretty cool if you have sub-legends and modified colors for the indicator lights. Red indicator light = red sub legends active. Green indicator light = green sub legends active.

Is... is there some hacky workaround to make any of this possible? In essence: re-map the keys, but trick the keyboard indicator lights into treating them as if they haven't been re-mapped.

I'm using an old bluetooth satechi keyboard with only a caps lock indicator. It works if I turn off the caps lock re-mapping in Karabiner, and I haven't figured out a way to keep the indicator working even when the key has been re-mapped. Up 'til now I haven't really cared, but for indicators that stay on/off, it'd be more important.

I have Keyboard Maestro, Karabiner, BetterTouchTool, and Alfred. I'm very very very beginner with Applescript and mostly just duct tape stuff from what I find on forums or tweak from downloaded workflows that use it.

(Alas, I am running Catalina, but some quick googling says ControllerMate will at some point be updated. In any case, it makes me optimistic that it'll be possible from the OS.)

I updated a 2017 MBP 15" to Big Sur and everything is fine except my ability to control the volume of my external monitor with my keyboard.

Sound Control doesn't work (...yet?).
Boom3D doesn't work.
Background Music doesn't work.
Monitor Control works great except that it randomly turns off the monitor now and again.

I'm so close yet so far. :(

I got one of those 'magic keyboards' with the num-pad and it's got 7 additional F-keys (F13-19). Anyone have any idea how I can actually use them for something? Or bind them to something? Nothing shows up in keyboard options which, presumably, applies to my laptop built-in keyboard.

Karabiner can re-map them. I generally use extra F keys to launch macros via Keyboard Maestro.
