They offer them with drives installed or just the bare enclosure.

After coming to the epiphany that I don't need to carry around hundreds of gigabytes of shameful While I'm gleefully rubbing my hands in anticipation of saturating my poor, poor SATA II bus, are there any OS X specific tips/tricks running a non-Apple SSD? Most of the information I find is either horribly out of date or just plain stupid/neurotic like disabling Spotlight or fine-tuning the position of the EFI partition so that blah blah blah  . I'm not even sure whether I need to enable TRIM, since evidently Samsung built in their own garbage collection.

The 830 in my 15" 2010 gets me from cold boot to usable desktop in 25 seconds, including typing in my 27 character FV2 passphrase.

Did you do anything weird like write it full of 0s in disk util?

I'm pretty sure that Apples recommends a minimum of one charge-cycle per month. If those 14 cycles were spread out over a year it (probably) should not have wrecked the battery like that. If, however, you went 11 months straight on AC power before pulling two cycles a day for a week I could see that loving things up.
