I'm actually using one right now. It's made by "Pwr+" and seems to work just dandy!

Why is it taking so long for ssd prices to drop?

Three years ago, an 80GB X-25M was almost $600. The are $150 now.

Four years ago, Hitachi started selling the first terabyte hard drive for $370. They're about $55 now. Isn't flash memory dirt cheap these days?

e: I guess if the X-25M drops another $50 in the next year I can't complain so much, but I guess I just want a 256GB SSD that's affordable to my budget.

Not an early '08 15"? I've been wanting to sell mine. Who would want you now MacBookPro4,1 :(

The hdd in my early 08 MBP is finally unusable. No worries, I've got backups. But could someone point me towards a reliable, small, and preferably cheap ssd I could use for just a system partition? The superdrive barely works anyway so I figure I might as well do the optibay thing.

All right, I've threatened it before, but I'm finally upgrading my 15" early 08 MBP. Local computer place says it'll be a day or two before they get my replacement hdd in, so I'd like to order this stuff now. You guys mind checking out my shopping cart, make sure I'm not screwing up?
ram
ssd
optibay
Kind of a pain in the rear end finding an optibay that didn't say unibody only. And I only need a decent set of small screwdrivers, nothing weird like for unibodies, right? And my preexisting 2gb ram will play nice? Thanks a lot guys, I secondguess a lot.

I'd buy a bigger SSD that isn't made by OCZ. And if your current memory is 2x1GB, you'll need 4GB and 2GB chips if you want 6GB. Double check because it might be 800MHz PC-6400 RAM.

Really? I figured 32 would be enough, long as I kept everything else on the hdd. Will it eat up the remaining as virtual memory? Ram-wise, I've got 2x2 in there right now, so I'm hoping that is a nonissue.

The optibay I linked doesn't say anything about sata ii compatibility, is that a concern?

So I've got my Crucial M4 in here and upgraded to 6GB of RAM, and this early 08 MBP really does feel like a new computer. The RAM itself I didn't notice any big difference doing normal stuff - no reason I should - but as much as everyone testifies to an SSD being a gamechanger, there's just nothing like seeing the results yourself. Everything is just nicer to use. A fresh Lion install doesn't hurt either.

Also if anyone has any qualms about opening up one of these pre-unibody MacBook Pros, I was a little hesistant, since my only experience opening up computers has been lower quality, nothing at stake wintel machines: it was super easy. iFixit has great guides to follow, though you barely need them.

Now to get in touch with Amazon/USPS and find out where in the ether the optibay I ordered went.

e: Speak of the devil, there's the little sucker!

Right on, optibay installed, both drives seem to be working. Just want to check - I'm right in thinking I should keep the hdd in the original spot because that way it gets use of the sudden motion sensor and stuff, right? Makes more sense to have the ssd in the optibay where it's not as snug?

Anybody have any recommendations for a stylish, business appropriate messenger bag that will hold a 15" MBP and an iPad? Google bring up tons so I'm looking for some way to narrow it down.

Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of Timbuk2 bags, I still have and use the first one I got about ten years ago. I just picked up a Control briefcase-y bag because I realized that between my job and school I never had to carry more than a few notebooks, my 15" MBP, and my TouchPad. I really like it a lot.

Also I wish I hadn't looked that link up because while mine is a pretty cool gunmetal grey and green, that denim and indigo one is rad as hell. drat, so is the canvas one. Might have to sell and rebuy...

Best customer support ever, solid bags and made in :911:

I know I recommended them too, but these days I think only their custom bags are made in the states, and the rest are actually made in Asia. You can tell when you go to the product page, if one of the features is "Imported." Also it'll say "Made in SF" for those they actually make there. I have bags from both, you can tell the difference - the custom bags simply are the highest/higher quality, but the outsourced ones are still very, very good.

So this isn't a complete derail - what's the cheapest, most reliable cd reader/burner I can pick up?

Do any of you have any opinions on external disk drives? I was thinking about going for an external blu ray drive, since those are ~the future~ anyway. Thoughts?

This just happened to me, and I bought this liteon drive from newegg:

Here's some anecdotal data for the ssd/optibay chat. I originally had my Crucial M4 in the optibay in my early 08 MBP, with the hdd in its normal spot. However, I've had some issues - mostly sleep issues, basically it never reliably slept. I finally got off my lazy rear end and took it apart and switched them, and although I feel bad that the hdd is no longer hooked up to the sensors on that side of the machine, it is running noticeably better. It's also the only way I was able to update the firmware on the M4, and my sleep problems are gone. Makes a huge difference.

I'm not saying they don't exist, but I'm certainly at a loss to to name any smartphone or tablet with user-serviceable RAM or storage (not counting expansion slots, obviously). I wish Apple weren't trying to make the analogy between iDevices and computers valid, because it isn't and it shouldn't be.

When does anyone need to simultaneously left and right click at the same time? Even with CAD programs I don't think I've ever had to do that (though the mouse control scheme for every single god drat CAD program is different so who knows).

A fair number of games use it. Hence why most Mac users never see it.

As to the original question, I can say that from my personal (and only personal) experience that using the dvd drive is murder on the battery, second to none. An external drive will be better, but purely battery wise, as has been said, it's best to run them off the internal drive.

e: Now I've disabled Flash in Chrome, installed ClickToPlugin in Safari, and am actually going to use Safari for any Flash stuff since it uses the most recent Flash and generally seems to have better Flash performance than Chrome.

I'm banging my head against my dad's 2012 13" MBP right now. I swapped the hdd for an ssd, no problem. But I'm trying to upgrade the RAM from 2x1GB to 2x2GB and getting the "denied" symbol at boot. I have tried each stick of the new RAM individually, and the machine boots just fine from either. Works fine if I put the original RAM in there. It'll boot even if I mix the old and new RAM. But it won't accept both new sticks at the same time.
