Does anyone have an entire computing setup of Air + iPad? I'm considering it but it kind of makes me feel like they would overlap too much.

That's what I'm worrying about, mainly since im getting an iPhone later this year. Air + iPhone + ereader may be the perfect combo.

Has anyone tried WoW on the new Airs?

I'm considering getting a high end stock iMac 27" from Best Buy today. Is the 4GB ram enough for WoW + iTunes? That's my only worry.

I'm having some serious first world problems here. For whatever reason, I'm thinking of taking back this new iMac and going back to my gaming PC I built and getting a 13" Air. If I did that I would have pc upgrade money, and I could sell my iPad since the Air would cover everything I need in it. Has anyone else done the "windows box / air" combo and enjoyed it? I can't help but think jumping back and forth from OSs will be jarring and i'll miss the iMac.

I'm not sure where else to post this, so yeah. What do you pc building/upgrading enthusiasts do to not get rid of your macs and go back to a desktop pc? I can't really scratch the itch of wanting PC games and the ability to upgrade and change things whenever I want. I absolutely LOVE my new iMac, but it only made me want to use my pc again and really learn everything there is to learn about it inside and out. It's basically the classical vs romantic argument and I can't really find a middle ground.

Not sure what Retina displays people are expecting either; the 27" is already at a very good resolution for the size. Would be interesting if they found a source for >1080p 21" panels though. I think they'll just get some Ivy Bridge love and general GPU/etc refresh.

The trackpad is amazing and in my opinion killed the mouse as a desktop peripheral. It's that good. I don't think I'll ever use a mouse again for general use.

Any 2011 or newer, really- though I would highly recommend getting one with 8gb of RAM instead of 4.

Obviously the 13" will have more screen real estate than the 11" in which to accommodate your software UI (and an rMBP will have even way more if you scale, though the elements might end up slightly smaller than you'd like) but that's about it.

Cool! That's what I was thinking. My current plan is to wait for a refresh while trying to sell my old iMac and grab a fairly high spec 13". Sounds like it should be a perfect match. My 2011 27” iMac (first iMac!) is finally feeling it’s age. Not so much in performance but when you hit the os cutoff it’s all downhill from there. I’m encountering games that no longer work, etc so it’s time for a new Mac. Unfortunately this time around I can’t go for a top dollar 27” again. Right now two interests are the $1,099 Mini vs $1,299 21.5” iMac. The iMac will obviously include a screen upgrade, though the smaller screen may be strange at first. With the mini I could use the iMac as a monitor but I have to wonder how much nicer the new iMac screen would look once I got over the smaller size. I can’t really tell which of these has the better specs for our needs. Storage wise the iMac wins easily. 256gb is stupid in 2019 but it’s doable. I’ve never had SSD so I won’t technically miss not having it. I want to do music production (nothing insane on the software end outside of drum software and some basic plugins), photo editing, some light video editing in the future, and the gf wants to play The Sims 4 and have it not look and run like garbage. Any advice?

e: drat I just realized that the 2019 21.5s aren’t easily ram upgraded. That certainly pushes me towards the mini.

I’ve been thinking about my computer situation and have decided to go with a Mac Mini. Thanks for the advice and comments earlier y’all, it helped me figure out what I really want right now. I’m going with the 1099 model + 16gb and I’m trying to see if the i7 would be worth it. If anyone has thoughts on that it would be helpful, though I may just go for it. Mainly if there’s a decent black friday weekend deal. If not I’ll probably grab one from b&h since they’ve got a discount on almost customizations. Again my main needs are music production + running the sims 4. Besides that, photo processing, some light video editing in the future and random not graphically intensive indie games would be as demanding as it gets but I don’t mind punching a little past what I need since it’s not like I’ll be upgrading the cpu down the line.

I’m not an expert, but I think you’d be all right with the i5, an i7 wouldn’t hurt anything though. You may want to check out Apple’s Refurb section too. I see a bunch of Minis with 16GB of RAM in various configurations.

You’re the best! I had been looking multiple times a day for Mac Mini refurbs and gave up because they were never there. I checked again after this post and found and ordered the exact upgraded model I had been trying to figure out how to afford for a really good price. 16gb ram and i7 were exactly what I wanted. First Apple refurb :)

Splinter posted:

If you can afford it, I'd get the i7, because as you said, you're not going to be able to upgrade it in the future. The i5 would be fine too, but some DAWs can actually make use of the i7's additional threads (e.g. Ableton uses 1 thread per track/signal path), so you actually have a use case to justify the upgrade. The i7 mini is still one of the better processors you can get in a Mac, so CPU wise it is a good value (by Mac standards).

I ended up getting the i7, definitely looking forward to that. It’s a dumb thing to think but going from an i5 in my old iMac to a new i7 feels way more exciting than another i5. Numbers. Consumerism. Yay! I’m glad I went with it though. Makes the most sense to me to future proof the cpu for a while. That way I could eventually grab an egpu and maybe max out ram and extend the life of this thing even further. At this point though I’ll hopefully be moving from GarageBand next year to Logic Pro X and I can only assume this setup is going to be perfect for that.

Lazyhound posted:

You can upgrade the RAM yourself anyway.

Yeah, while I don’t really want to immediately, it’s great to know I can down the line. I wish there was a simple panel to access it but eh it doesn’t seem too bad considering I’m decently comfortable working with hardware.

Yeahhh I’m going to seriously consider selling my i7 Mac Mini I bought as a Logic/Lightroom machine and buy a 16gb base Air. My U2410 is hot and lovely and unpleasant to stare at and I’m tired of having my computer anchored to my desk. Even if I swapped this towards a new Mini I would still want to grab a wall arm monitor mount and a new monitor so meh, let’s do this all in one package. Probably cheaper in the long run and less to worry about when it comes to cables and all.

It’s honestly baffling that this is something I can do. My home studio is going to center around a MacBook Air, what. I haven’t owned a MacBook of my own since I think the first gen 17” Pro!

I would like to get into making music videos down the line. Nothing crazy and fancy or anything. The M1 Airs are fine for that right? I would almost certainly use FCP. I don’t really mind if potential throttling means a few added minutes during heavy loads or whatever.

A bit late but in case it helps anyone else decide, my reason for probably going 16gb Air for LP/LR/PS/FCP/Light gaming over a similar Pro is really down to the fact that I don't think it's worth the extra price for me and the idea of having a fanless computer is so cool. If you search around for throttling issues even on the stock base Air it's not that bad at all. If you have a reason to worry about throttling you'll probably know before you ask. The fanless design, it's just one of those things I find really fascinating on a hardware level. I love minimalism in design and I feel like the Airs have reached a place that Apple has been aiming for since the 00s when I was first getting into Apple/design in general.

Not really the right thread but since the topic of FCP is active, that would be good for me right? I want to make music videos and assorted weird poo poo. I'm a control freak and don't really plan on working with others past basic collaboration. I also don't really get into super fancy modern effects and whatever at all so I don't ask for much past good software to learn and grow into and combine with my music.

Kilometers Davis

My reasoning at least for going 16gb in my soon to order Air is that I’ve never once been let down by having too much ram in a computer, and every time I’ve upgraded it has been a huge improvement. It’s a no brainer for me to get the base one with the upgraded ram. Storage can be dealt with in a million ways but whatever ram you’ve got is all you’re going to get. I do imagine though that the 8gb base Airs are still going to be workhorses like we’ve never seen from anything close to that form factor/specs/price.
