So my CEO has the newest MacBook Pro, and has been using it with an external monitor at work. Before Lion he was using it with the screen slightly ajar, but with the Macbook's screen turned off. With Lion it insists on waking up the Macbook's monitor at the slightest hint of an angle.

The whole reason why he does this is because he's afraid of the computer having a heat stroke and dying. Some people at the Mac Store told him to do this, and it would be a "bad idea" to run the computer with the screen closed entirely.

Is this true? If it's not, is there some kind of official Apple document I can show him that shows them making the statement?

Isn't Time Machine enough in this case? Just select the whole drive, let it backup, and then when the new drive is in, you use a bootable OS installer disk to restore from the TM backup to the new harddrive.

I guess this counts as a Mac Hardware question. Basically, I work from home once a week, and I bring my office phone home with me to take calls. I could cut this out if I use a softphone over our VPN, which I can. I want to use a wireless headset, so I'm not tethered to my computer.

Is there either a bluetooth antenna that can extend to like 100 feet (to make sure I never drop a call if I go downstairs or away from the office), or a wifi headset that I would be able to pick from the audio input/output menu (option click on the sound menubar item)?

I hope not, because I plan on buying one, and removing the optical drive to put in a SSD for the OS.

Basically this. An Air wouldn't fit my iTunes library very easily (or not at all for the rate it's growing), but I want my next computer to have a SSD for the OS/apps, and storage for the music files and maybe the few movies I have in iTunes.

I know in the past they've done back-to-school deals with the computers, where you used to get an iPod Shuffle or gift cards or something along those lines. I can't imagine those would be offered tomorrow though. Does anyone know the restrictions on those deals, or when they start being offered? Basically, I was wondering if it was worth it until those offers generally kick in.

Oh man, just made myself poorer as soon as they announced the price of that retina display model. Pretty good for their servers, went through without any problems, except for double guessing myself.

A little disappointed it's $600 more for double the storage space though. And I know that the HD space can't be updated normally. But whatever, I'm turning the old Hackintosh into a Windows 7 file server, and that's where the movie files are going.

Is there a good way to get a USB external hard drive that I've been using for Time Machine to go wireless? I used a desktop before, and in about 2 weeks I'll be getting my MBPR in, and the only thing that would be attached to it would be that backup. Is that what the Airport Express is for? Looking at it's page, it looks like it's a full router, and I already have a decent one I don't have any reasons to replace it for yet. I was going to turn my old desktop (Hackintosh) into a file server, but I doubt it would be able to handle Apple's requirements, just in terms of likely being NTFS formatted just to be read by Windows 7.

For a good, more specific reason, go to the Console app, and look at the logs to see what happened at that time, and google anything that looks like it could be the reason.

IUG

Simple stupid question. I have a MBPr now, and it's my first laptop (previous computer was a Hackintosh desktop). It's still mostly a desk computer, so do I want to leave it plugged in all the time, or do I let it charge to 100%, and then get down as close to 0% before plugging it in (like my iPhone)? Or practical constant AC use fine?

I've been on the MBPr for about a week after it was announce, and I haven't had any of the choppiness. If it means anything, it's plugged in most of the time. However, Chrome has caused 2 kernel panics for me. Not as bad as my Hackintosh, and with a SSD and how Lion auto restores, I'm back up in like 15 seconds anyways.

I finally got around to doing the SMC reset for my MBPr, and during that restart it put my fans into what must be 100% power for a second. I guess I don't have to worry about playing Minecraft at full screen on that computer, because I've never heard the fans go that loud since I bought it, except for that time. Every other time the machine has been silent, even if it was getting warm to the touch under Notch's code.

My mother's USB external hard drive is dying, and this is her Time Machine backup drive. She doesn't use the computer at a desk, just browses on it from the couch. Since her drive is dying, she's going to need to replace it so she doesn't loose her photos and etc.

I was showing her the Time Capsule so that she wouldn't be tied down to a USB drive that she has to keep stored under an endtable. However, that's $300 bucks on Apple's site. Is there a wireless NAS that would as a Time Machine drive instead?

So the next thing I need to think of.

The rMPB will be a desktop replacement for me. I want to keep my current Win7 computer which is a first gen Core2Duo with a bunch of hard drives in it for a media/network server. What do you guys recommend? Should I convert it using Windows Home Server for my wifes old laptop and my Win7 install Ill put on the Mac, or just pretty much leave it as is and setup sharing of folders to access stuff?

I did exactly this, except my Desktop was a Hackintosh, but now runs Windows 7. I just share the folders and a hard drive through Windows' built-in sharing services. In fact, I use that computer as the media server, and I have another computer hooked up to my TV as a XBMC HTPC. But I also have XBMC on my Mac for when I'm too lazy and just want to watch the media from the rMBP.

The only problem with running two OSs on a RMBP (as someone who has one) is I can't imagine putting two OSs on this small of a hard drive. I'm already down to just 90 something gigs remaining, and that's just my iTunes library and 3 Steam games (Bastion, The Walking Dead, Binding of Isaac).

I haven't done Boot Camp yet, since my last computer was a Hackintosh that I turned straight over to Windows 7 when I got this one. From a quick Google search it seems that if you wanted to do Boot Camp, then it must be on that same drive as OS X. Which is too bad, because I would suggest getting an external USB drive otherwise. But then you'd need a virtualization program instead.

I think the only real times people say "don't run Windows on Apple hardware" is when the person says they want to run Windows exclusively.

I can't wait for the call where I have to explain to her about the 'Windows key' on her wireless keyboard. :smithicide:

I've been using a Dell keyboard with my MBPr, and it's a pain in the rear end. Just because of the Windows key. Sure, it acts just like the Command key, but it has changed places with the option/alt key in placement. It's weird just how awkward it feels to do Command and whatever key.

The only reason why I'm doing this is because my Apple aluminum keyboard doesn't work with my KVM, probably because of the extra USB ports on the keyboard, and the KVM isn't supplying power. But besides the Windows key, the Apple keyboard is such much better to type on.

IUG
Jul 14, 2007

Yeah, I knew that could be done, and I don't really have an excuse for why I haven't done it yet. So now I will instead of trying to struggle against it for no reason.

But also the keys themselves. This keyboard is just so big and clunky compared to the neat and small Apple aluminum keyboard that I prefer.

EDIT: Oddly, that doesn't work. Even after changing those two keys around, it's still Windows key W to close a window, quit a program, open a tab, etc.

Nevermind, it turns out that drop down menu at the top was on the Apple keyboard, and there was an option for this Dell keyboard.

The Apple TV still has an MSRP of $99. Places selling it for less are likely doing so either because they still stock the old model, or because it's open season for consumers between today and Christmas.

I think people are missing the part where I said that we had this conversation a few days ago. So that's why I was check to see if it was on sale or not. I'll pick it up at $85 then.
