So if I'm looking at getting a 15" MBP, they're going to be releasing a new one in about 6 months? I play games a little bit but my job will require that I watch a lot of tv too and so I'll be using it for that. I should probably wait, right?

Everyone is riding a wave of :downs: after the new Air launch when it comes to rumours, buy it now if you need it. I'd only start second-guessing purchasing a MBP as it approaches March of next year or so. If new ones do turn out to launch this year, you can sell it or if you're lucky return it and not be down too much money.

Yeah, as it turns out, one of my friends works at the Apple store in Austin so he's going to give me his F&F discount. I'll probably buy one in the next couple weeks.

Why do people claim that the MBP is not very portable? It weight 5lbs. If you can't carry an extra 5lb weight with you all day, you have an issue.

I don't know, I can't even feel the difference between 2lbs and 5lbs so I guess I'm just weird but I could definitely see how the 17" would be annoying. Not on the weight aspect, but trying to fit it into anything would be difficult. That's just about the size of a small tv, and you certainly aren't carrying one of those around with you all day.

Ok so we're reasonably sure the refresh for the MBP is coming next month, right? Because I'm going to buy one but I don't want to get one now if the new one is coming out less than a month away.

Also, has anyone played the Diablo 3 beta on their MBP? I know it runs fairly slowly on the Air, and honestly it's one of my reasons for getting the Pro.

There's no "reasonably sure" until a picture of the retail packaging shows up online. All we can do is interpret rumors and compare those against Intel's roadmap.

As of right now, it looks likely that we'll see new MacBook Pros in April.

Yeah, I know with Apple there's no real way to tell but the rumor is April?

Do we have any idea what the specs might be in say the better 15" MBP? How would they differ from the MBP now?

Jesus christ just release the new ones already so I can stop sitting on my hands. If they're not out before Diablo 3 releases, I will probably get drunk and yell at Steve's tombstone.

Ok how easy is it to add RAM and swap out the hard drive in a MBP (not the retina one obviously) because I'm going to order one next week but I don't want to pay for the extra RAM or the SSD when it'll be cheaper just to get it from Newegg.

So who is the 13" MBP for? I want to replace my 13" MBP and cannot think of any good reason to not get an Air this time. My 2.26ghz Core 2 Duo with 8gb of ram is a little sluggish for my daily computing nowadays... will an Air blow it away? Has the Air closed the performance gap between it and the 13" MBP? I'd put a SSD and 8gb of ram in both.

My upgrade intervals have been growing (1 year, 2 years, 3 years) so this next computer will probably need to last awhile.

Well if you're like my sister, the 13" pro is for college students who don't want to pay the extra $600 for a 15" but still like to watch dvds on their laptop in the dorm room.

I'm trying to purchase a Macbook Pro on the store, my first Apple purchase.

I'm at the point where I have to create an AppleID. It has my email address, so I create the password but when I hit Create Account it doesn't do anything. Doesn't even take me to an error screen or anything, it literally acts like it's not even a button.

Any idea what's going wrong?

I'm still getting the old style because I can upgrade it myself for cheap whereas with the other one I'm stuck forever.

Ah, didn't realize that the port was so bad. I don't even know how to install a partition on a hard drive as I've never had to do it before.

GENERALLY things being tracked don't show up for 24 hours or, if 24 hours is the middle of the night, the next business day after that

Does anyone here use a Mac Mini for a media center? I have a giant desktop I built a few years ago. It was my only computer until i got a Macbook Pro in June. Now I just use to as a media center for the house. I'm thinking about switching it out with the Mac Mini because it'll take up way less room and be compatible with my Pro.

Anyone else doing this? It seems like a good idea on paper.

I'd argue you don't need a dedicated Mac Mini for media. I've got my MBA wired up to a large external drive, and I'm sharing a media directory on there using AirVideo.

Then, assuming you have an iOS device and an AppleTV, you can simply select media through the AirVideo app and watch on the big screen - all streamed wirelessly.

It sounds a bit rube-goldbergian - but it works really, really well.

I've looked for years for media center type setups, and this is the best implementation I've seen so far.

Here's how I have it set up:

The PC controls the monitor on the left and the TV on top (which I'm also using to play my xbox right now).
My laptop is obviously my MBP.

But, as you can tell from the bottom part of the picture, I am currently living like poo poo

I use XBMC for my room but I use Plex to push the media center stuff to every other room in the house. My brother/sister/parents use it when I'm not home so I can't have it set up on my laptop because then it'd be unavailable when I was gone.

I don't have an AppleTV and Plex isn't available for the AppleTV anyway. I'm using a Roku box in the living room for my parents. My brother and sister use their PS3/Xbox respectively to get the media.

I don't use the DVD drive in the PC anyway and I use my Pro for all my writing/photoshop needs so the PC really is just a giant waste of space. Plus, with the Mini I could get rid of my of the extraneous cables like the ethernet, DVI (I could actually use HDMI), and the various mouse/keyboard wires and it would cut down on that rat's nest.

If you are already on board with having a complicated-rear end computer involved in playing videos, and don't find it to be a bit much, the mini makes for a fine media center, considering how tiny and quiet they are. If you buy a recent one, you can even play some basic games.

But, I think I'm about to sell my 2006 mini and switch over to an AppleTV, because I just want things to be simple.

I looked at the AppleTV but it doesn't do Plex or XBMC (at least not the newest ones. They're said to be impossible to jailbreak) which are both pretty essential to me.
