I'm probably going to buy an iMac when the new models come out, and I'm hoping that the cost of the SSD options will go down somewhat. I'd rather boot from a SSD and have a large external storage for media, than have one large mechanical hard drive.

Alternatively (and the :spergin: in me shudders at the ugliness of the potential setup), if I were to get an external hard drive enclosure for the computer, would there be any formatting incompatibilities?

Admittedly I'm relatively new to Apple computers, but the computer scientist in me says that it should be as simple as using the disk utility to format the drive as FAT32 or HFS+.

How is opening the iMac and installing an SSD? I've seen the write-ups on how to do it, and it seems like it would take a long time, and be really easy to gently caress up, destroying some essential cable.

For Time Machine backups is there any advantage to getting an AEBS+NAS vs. a Time Capsule?

Along those lines, I currently have time machine backing up to an Ubuntu server running in a VM on a second hard drive in my desktop. It works well until I get a dedicated device to do this.

Is there a nice how-to or even just a brief overview on setting up the whole Time Capsule thing? I'm planning to get an iMac once I see how the refresh is and I would like to set something like a TC up but I've got no clue about them really. Is it something I could set up using a USB External drive and my existing router (Linksys e3000) or would I need to spring for the actual Time Capsule to take care of it?

Unless you have a router that specifically supports time machine, like the Netgear WNDRMAC, your options are:

1. By an Apple router.
2. Install OpenWRT or DD-WRT on your router, and tear your hair out trying to get avahi and netatalk running and configured to provide time machine services.
3. Rolling your own router with an old PC (or new if that's your thing) and a switch.

Are there any 2011 MacBook Air accessories that are generally considered necessities? I've got a $35 balance on my amazon.ca account, and I think I'd like to get something nice for it.

I think he's hoping that if they charge $30 for a release every two–ish years that they'll start charging $15 for a yearly release. I think it's more likely that if you want to spend $15 yearly that you will be skipping every other release.

Is there any 13" Macbook Air cases/bags that stand above the rest? The Speck cases look pretty slick without adding significant bulk.

I wouldn't get a Time Capsule simply because it's not a good value. Unless you need the added performance of the internal drive, just get an AEBS and plug a USB drive into it. It's slower but a much less expensive (and more expandable) solution.

Will the AEBS use an attached drive simply for time capsule backups or can I also store my media on it and make it available by network share?

I plan on buying a new iMac when I graduate this summer, after the 2012 model is released, and I imagine my set up will look like: 256GB SSD partitioned in half, one for Windows, one for OSX, and a 1-2TB platter drive with Documents, Pictures, ... symlinked into ~/Whatever in OSX, and the Windows 7 (8?) Libraries pointed to those same locations. This seems like the most seamless way to operate.

I imagine that FAT32 is the best option for formatting the platter drive. How is the support for HFS+ in Windows / NTFS in OSX?

I think the only downside of using ExFAT is if you tried to connect the drive to something other than a newer Mac or Windows PC you wouldn't be able to read it - but if it's an internal drive that's not a problem.

Linux doesn't read it out of the box (but can read it with FUSE) or if you tried to connect it to a DVR or TV or something, it would only read regular FAT (I think)

I'll never use Linux outside of a VM, so exFAT it will be.

In realistic land here I was helping my prof choose a new computer and he bemoaned the fact that most of the new laptops are using hdmi/thunderbolt. Now he just packs a $13 monoprice thunderbolt->VGA adapter in his bag. Problem solved.

Oh I know that. He's saying it should be regular 15" MBP pricing. $1799 for that machine would be giving it away.

The big difference is that the iPhone and iPad are dominant in their markets and selling hand over fist which gives Apple the bulk buying power to offset the cost of the new displays. The Mac has no such dominance and doesn't sell nearly the volume required to subsidize the cost of the new display. Sure they could use their billions and take a loss on it, but they have this odd tendency to like to make money on hardware sales.

The other thing to try is different modifier keys in combination with the Launchpad key. I'm not finding documentation on what they might do.

In mission control preferences you can choose to have the dashboard as its own space or an overlay as before. I'm also positive that you can choose the dashboard shortcut in keyboard preferences.

I'm curious about something I noticed on my 2012 MBA 13".

It seems to take a long time responding when I first wake it - the screen comes on instantly showing the login prompt. I type my password and nothing happens for what seems like a LONG time - 7-10 seconds I'd guess. Then the text will fly into the password box all at once and instantaneously go to the desktop.

Is this normal?

If I'm not mistaken in my understanding of what happens there: you're computer was actually turned off with a copy of it's state on hard disk. When you open it up it has to boot and do a full restore from the disk which could be 4-8GB depending on how much ram you have. On a windows PC this is a resume from Hibernate. The fact that it does this so fast and transparently is frankly amazing. You can speed it up by keeping fewer apps open when you close the lid.

Everyone's attributing this to waking from deep sleep, but the 2011 MBA had this exact same issue when waking from sleep until a couple of updates into Lion. You'd flip the lid open and it would be completely non-responsive to input for ~7 seconds. Google for "MacBook Air sleep wake" and you'll see countless results for people who had the same issue. Hopefully they get it sorted out for the 2012 model, like they eventually did with the 2011.

That's odd, my 2011 MBA does this, though it's usually only 3-4 seconds and I just thought it was normal (as in the post I made above). Does yours allow input instantly after it's been sleeping for more than an hour?

Has anyone had a problem with the MacBook Air (2011 13") where, once it gets warm, the trackpad will start behaving erratically, sending clicks without tapping or pushing down as you move the cursor around? It's really frustrating. I'm hoping it's something that I can deal with at home before taking the time to bring it in.

Is there a big difference in performance between the 13" and 15" mbp models? I might occasionally produce a home video in iMovie, or compile a program in XCode, but not as a matter of course. My 2011 MBA has a faulty display cable and it can apparently only be fixed by replacing the entire display which runs $600 after taxes and labour and I think upgrading would be a better option.
