 Anyone have some suggestions for a beginner entry? Does Japan have an HBO that produces original series? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but that's about what the quality I'd like to shoot for.

I don't really have a taste for the awkward comedy that seems so rampant, but I do enjoy the action/drama movies that I catch, and the themes, and the serious-faces.
