Hey thread, Im starting up DeSu 2 again, but I wanted to ask for advice cause its not my first time restarting it. What typically happens is Im fine ish on getting through everything, even keeping up Unkillable up until early tuesday, where it all just kinda falls apart and its like I can't fight back. Peeking Artix LP of the original he never seems to have too much trouble until way later, so I gotta wonder if there's just something Im not getting? Help is appreciated, I wanna beat this drat game.

Why does every boss fight in devil survivor suck rear end. It's always "ok, let's go in and just get hosed in every hole so I can tell what dumb way i'm supposed to cheese this next time". Like oh ok Belberith, so your gimmick is that you can attack the entire field, don't lose out on extra turns by doing so, and oh now that I'm in the fight it turns out that the routes that lead to the boss are blocked off and I need to fight two battles for each switch in order to activate them both at the same time, assuming that none of my teams just get murdered by big mask dickhead over there while this is happening.

Of course the real option is to just quit the fight entirely (making sure I gotta mash through like 3 cutscenes with a decent amount of dialogue options) and get demons that can bypass that restriction, but that isn't actually fun to me. Having to do this every time is just killing any desire I have to finish this game. I never feel like I'm fighting on equal ground when I'm up against a boss, and I get that a lot of people find it interesting to have to cheese through all these encounters, but the whole thing is here that I'm on the chaos path. I want to feel like I'm standing toe to toe with these motherfuckers and kicking their asses, not like I'm beating the fat kid on the playground by climbing on top of the slide and pelting him with stones. And it just feels like that's the only way to engage with the combat at this point in the game.

The reason why, though it's perfectly reasonable to argue it is a failure at it, is that Devil Survivor was pretty bluntly designed with the idea of building teams that can do everything you might need to do.

If you build for Full Damage in DS you output frankly absurd amounts of DPS. That is because it was designed with the assumption that you'd either have one or two DPS characters supposed by non-DPS characters or having support and movement measures in addition to damage dealing.

That said by the endgame you are expected to be optimizing demon builds because honestly by the point you can get that far you have the options to just crazy absurdly overpowered demons. With a bit of optimization you ARE fighting toe to toe with them. That said it's hard to say how you can optimize better without knowing your team.

Alright, embarrassing question: whats the modifiers on Blessed difficulty in DeSu 2 RB? Really thinking about saying gently caress it and playing the easier difficulty

It doesn't help that the Belberith thing is just one step in the looong boss rush that is the 7th day because the game's pace is whack. At that point you just want it to be over, I don't think I've ever beat Belberith without using an Avian/Genma demon to bypass the field's gimmick (and given how convoluted it is, I'd bet whoever designed the battle forgot about their race traits).

GameFAQs users say Blessed increases damage to enemies and reduces damage to allied characters and also boosts macca and experience gain.

Keep in mind you can switch the difficulty at any time.

I started Q2, but I feel like I'm taking unreasonable amounts of damage on normal? My characters are easily two-shot while enemies take 4+ even hitting weaknesses. I can line guard the front every turn, but it's expensive and also highly likely to drop the guardian to critical health if there's a line or splash attack.

I do know the systems from previous Persona and Etrian games. Am I missing something? More grinding? Make an effort to fill out analysis and try to hit more all out attacks?

Been a while since I played q2 but iirc it's kinda like etrian in that you have to grind a bit bc you can only last like 5 battles at the start by design

Yes, you're not playing it wrong, the first "world" in this kind of games are always one of the hardest parts because of the lack of tools and options.

Yes, yes and yes. It's like SMT4, in that if you can comfortably get past the first boss, you'll be fine for the rest of the game, but if you haven't figured it out by the time you get there you're hosed. It's a very mechanics-focused game for how cartoony it is.

I'm restarting SMTIV again. Every other time I played, I went for a physical Flynn but I'm thinking of going magical instead. Thoughts?

Magical Flynn is OP in SMTIV, so anything you do should be easier than the physical playthroughs.

Yeah, Magical Flynn is OP as gently caress. Also, Luck is fairly useful in this game, so do take that into account.

I was led to believe physical Flynn was the better choice. Probably why I always struggled so much. So Magic, Agility, Luck is a good spread?

Also, is demolingual worth getting? I mean, are any of the demons that require demolingual worth the effort and expense?

IV and IV:A are my entry into the series and I really want to get through IV first.

Oh, a physical skill build is absolutely loving good, especially for later on. The problem, for Vanilla SMTIV, is as follows: the "Strength" stat? It mainly affects your normal attack. As in the regular sword/knife/mace/hammer attack. You want to have a viable Physical Skills build? You Focus on Dexterity and Agility.

Basically, it's like this:
  • You want to pump up your stat points on Dexterity and Agility if you want to develop Physical Build (Meaning focusing on Hit and Gun skills that use MP).
  • You want to pump up your stat points on Magic and Luck if you want a Magic Build.
  • In general, try not to neglect Agility because a slow Flynn is going to end up a dead Flynn.

e: There are other builds you can try, but I recommend you to start with those if you want to get through the game first.

Magical Flynn is super strong but has some trouble fitting all the magic skills you would want so sometimes you just have to make a judgement call on if you want a single target or multi target spell of a particular element.

Bizarrely, no. It's an entirely unique and standalone entry; presumably Special comes from its status as a ~Game Gear exclusive~ while the other games in the series were on Game Boy? Maybe?

This isn't a joke, by the way. After Medusa the game's difficulty drops off a loving cliff. While you're in Naraku, especially immediately upon starting, the lack of a defense stat of any kind means you're just going to die over and over again to factors completely outside of your control. But after you beat Medusa and get to the meat of the game, I can't even remember a challenging fight until, like, Pluto.
