Well, you've done it, gone and inspired me to make an effortpost about some of the builds I've done over the years.

Possibly my favorite base, from 1.8.9 - pic is a link to the album.

Lemme know if y'all'd rather have them inline and I'll do that (and the same for my other 3 bases).

This whole thing was built inside a stone pillar island I found offshore on the Nameless goon server. Followed a plan of "hollow out each level to the edge of its overhanging layer but don't destroy any dangling edge bits that don't reach the floor" and then just glassed in the edges.

I'm a huge sucker for building into the terrain and using the shape of it to guide my bases and I think this one came out pretty drat good.

code:
@ECHO OFF
java -Xms4096M -Xmx8192M -jar server.jar nogui
pause
e: you can use less RAM if you don't have enough, 3Gb is usually enough.

If you're running a vanilla server for a couple people you absolutely don't need that much ram allocated. Even with a heavily modded server with a dozen players you'll hardly be brushing 8GB, not to mention most cheap servers won't have that much. Allocating too much ram will cause other performance slowdowns with GC on a large volume.

For 2-4 players on vanilla, just use

code:
java -Xms1024M -Xmx2048M -jar server.jar nogui

I've not tested every amount of RAM and situation, but one of MCs main issues is disk I/O (IOPS specifically) and more RAM allocated makes it hit the disk less. This is an issue even on an SSD. The GC routine is much better than it used to be so unless you're being completely crazy it won't surface.
1Gb base +1Gb per player seems about right. A little more helps with multiple elytra in use, but nothing completely solves that.
It won't use what it doesn't need anyway.

Bedrock has the cross platform between all mobile and consoles but is a few versions behind java. It also has some technical limitations in terms of Redstone automation and they’ve gone out of their way to “balance” (break) certain aspects of automated farming.

I’ve been playing in both this past month or so and I enjoy them both for what they are but I’m playing java more now that I’m finding cool QoL mods and pretty poo poo like shaders.

Do they though? I mean I don't know anything about the terms of the acquisition, but at some point if I'm a soulless Microsoft VP, I start to make some 'tough decisions' in the name of buttoning up revenue.

At some point you buy the casino from the mobsters and start running numbers and asking "why are we giving all these steak dinners to these smoky men in the poker room, when its the old ladies at the slot machines who drop 10x as much money per visit?"

At some point you want to take Netflix public and have to figure out a way to kick out the nerds who are getting 5 DVDs mailed to them, ripping them the same day on the unlimited plan, and mailing them back.

To make a gaming analogy, at some point you buy the Civ IP, give Sid Meier a gold watch and a handshake, and then you turn it into a mobile game and part out all the different Civs as DLC.

Yes, all of these decisions are the kind of corporate poo poo that people hate, that take all the soul out of something which was once previously exciting and organic.

But I'm shocked there isn't some Microsoft exec asking why they are catering to a bunch of loud internet people who bought an 'unlimited' alpha version in 2011. Who isn't responding to "but shaders, texture packs, and mods!" with "They can buy it through the Microsoft Store". They've captured their generation of children who don't care or know if they are on Bedrock -- I wouldn't be shocked if they axed the Java version tomorrow.

It has, but Ak Gara posted this before which you just make your regular Painterly pack and then put the Continuation Pack higher.

please explain what's up with it then, because as it's been described to me multiple times by different people it's "mobs only spawn on new areas loading in so hostile mobs basically don't exist unless you're going somewhere new"

what dumb lowtax said above is more accurate. overworld mobs seem to have far fewer problems spawning in, but caves have a different mob cap than overworld mobs that is far easier to hit, and in that case, it is very possible to be constantly pegged at the mob limit and never see things respawn in a cave you're in. there's a hell of a lot more than that, like hostile mobs never despawning while passive mobs do despawn, but it is not quite as bad as literally any new area only spawns mobs the first time you go there.

like i said though they are ditching this poo poo with the nether update anyway, thankfully.

Maintaining the Java version is a fully rational capitalist move. Minecraft owes its explosive success to mods, and its continued growth is also largely due to mods. Even if the majority of players are NOT on the Java edition, the media that gets generated by people playing modded editions (way more modded gameplay gets viewed than vanilla) drives the games continuing momentum.

The truth is the development of the game (in java and otherwise) is way too drat slow to keep the level of interest required to keep a juggernaut like Minecraft at the top, and mods serve as a way to supplement that, and they've done so very effectively for several years.

I posted this in the PGS thread, but here goes:

So, I'm having trouble with windows firewall, and running a survival game with my son on LAN with my PC. When I disable windows firewall, he can connect fine. I also had a scenario where I forwarded the port for TCP and UDP in the advanced settings and the game worked without disabling the firewall. The port seems to change every time I activate a LAN session. I was wondering if there's a whole bunch of ports I can open up so I don't have to manually enter the port every time I start a session, or alternatively turn off my firewall every time we play. I should add that it's java edition on the current patch.

I am not a network dude and I just want to play co op Minecraft with my son for something to do indoors. Please Help!

tldr: What ports do I forward through windows firewall for Minecraft on LAN?

It's defined in the Server properties file, but by default it's 25565.

Where can I find the server properties file? And I maybe should also mention I'm not hosting it as a separate server like as a java server. I just start a single player survival game, then I open the menu and click "Open to LAN" in the menu. His laptop finds the game on the LAN, but the firewall stops him from joining without me forwarding whatever port that session happens to be.

Allow inward traffic for the application, not a global rule for the port.
If javaw.exe isn't already in the list, find it to add
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\[java version]\bin\javaw.exe

I added C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_251\bin\javaw.exe , made sure the public and private boxes were check on the allowed apps screen. I noticed the laptop has a different version of java so maybe i need to update it? I guess my next step is doing a fresh install on both computers and maybe update java. I loving hate networking, I just want for my son to have a really cool first experience with this game.

edit: should also add it still hasn't worked yet without disabling the firewall.

Doesn't Minecraft use its own bundled Java now? Looks like you need to find the file somewhere like <where launcher is>\runtime\jre-x64\bin\javaw.exe. You can get there by going to Installations -> <current profile> -> Edit -> More Options, scroll down -> Browse button on 'Java Executable'.

Buttcoin purse
Apr 24, 2014

Maybe Halibut Barn's suggestion will work, but if not:

"Open to LAN" uses a random port number, and I think uses one of those broadcast/multicast service discovery protocols that I can't get working under Linux, so it wasn't useful for me. I ended up running a dedicated server where, as noted above, you can just set a fixed port number. You can run the dedicated server on Windows and open up the port for it in the firewall.

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/

Funnily enough those instructions don't say anything about which directory you should run it from, but you want to run it from a directory where it's going to write all the world files and stuff. Once you've started it once, you can shut it down, see what directory layout it used, and delete the newly-generated world files and copy over your old world files from your saves directory so you can play in the same world you used to have.

I assume that the game will use the world seed from the existing world files and ignore the one in server.properties because my wife didn't complain when I did this for her world, but I'm not totally sure on that one.
