I really don't know why they haven't added in the ability to use paper sheets or books for writing yet. Modders have already done it - in fact you can 'read' them the way you read maps, by holding them in your character's POV and looking down at them. It's a tool that has even been used in some yogscast videos. It pretty much goes without saying how frustrating it is that mojang basically drags its feet on stuff that modders don't seem to have a problem putting in - even the simplest things.

If he's playing SMP then he's closer to being right. You have to swing the sword like you're sending a shockwave at the enemies or else you trade hits.

Yeah, that's probably more likely the case. I don't think I've ever been "hit" by a melee attack from 2+ blocks away in singleplayer.

I really wish Mojang would outright buy some of the ideas/mods from modders and properly add them into the game. There are so many mods out there that improve the quality of life of the base game that I find myself being rather annoyed when a new patch hit since that means all of the mods are out of date.

There's no reason why we don't have things as simple as redstone wire on walls or colored glass/lighting yet. Little insignificant things like that would be great and easy to implement but I'm starting to doubt if we'll even see alternate modes of transportation at this point.

Exactly. But it's hard to avoid attacks that sometimes hit you and sometimes don't. It just is not consistent. They are obviously working hard to add lots of great things for future releases. Tightening up combat would be a very welcomed addition to all of this.

They seem to have STARTED doing SOME of that - pistons, for example.

If there's a means of getting all the mod content in multiplayer easily though that would solve all our problems. Just play on your ideal modded server instead of the vanilla game. I'd love an industrial/buildcraft server where we make massive factories.

Unfortunately, this is the worst idea. If only because it'd give the already pretentious, entitled shits on the MinecraftForms a reason to whine or do something generally shittier than what we're already seeing.

Friends, Minecrafters, I have invented something incredible - a construct that allows you to 'latch' a redstone circuit with a button or pressure plate! That's right, all you do is, let's say, push a button once, and the device will remain on indefinitely! It's literally redstone with memory. But, you say, what if i want to switch it off? I have you covered - simply push the button again and the circuit turns off. Allow me to demonstrate this ingenious machine:

Currently the device we have the machine connected to - the torch - is off. We push the button, and the dispenser at the top fires an egg into the glass chamber. If it hatches, it falls to the bottom and activates a stone pressure plate! If it doesn't. . .

. . .A timer sends another pulse through to fire another egg, until the device is activated - the torch is lit.

When a chicken successfully hatches, the timer is broken by the piston.

As an aside, I ran out of chicken eggs during the testing process. Please don't let these ducks alter your opinions of this wondrous invention.

In any case, when the pressure plate activates, it connects another circuit and timer using this system here. . .

. . .Which, when the button is pressed again, activates the (patent pending) Chickeviscerator sub-system. The pistons retract one part of the glass chamber and allow an arrow to be fired from the lower dispenser. This piston door constantly opens and closes, keeping the chickens on the plate even as they are bombarded with lethally deadly arrows.

And with the chicken gone, the device has switched off! The machine is successful!

Wait, I'm confused, is the issue with hits not seeming to connect/getting hit from far away happening to you on SMP or SSP because I haven't had this issue in either case and if it is SMP you might want to end up blaming the server.

Either way, combat has been incredibly fun since 1.8, you just have to change how you do things and though 1.9 makes it take longer to down enemies, it is still easy. What I usually do is go sprinting at the enemy and do a jump hit on them, this gives me a chance of a critical strike while also throwing the enemy away from me sine I was dashing. If you keep sprinting the enemy has a harder time hitting you and if you feel they are getting to close for comfort, just sprint hit them to throw them away once more. With the changes that have been made to combat I have been finding myself throwing myself at the enemy all the time, even creepers, while pre-1.8 I would always hide and avoid, the changes to armor also make things a lot easier since iron is so abundant and easy to find right off the bat. The only thing I find a challenge in 1.9 are the Endermen, and since they are from the "final" dimension you access, it feels right, they are supposed to be harder.

My guess however is that the numbers for damage and defense will be tweaked just a little bit come 1.9 final release and that they are still trying to find a balance.

There were no sewers in 2000, pretty sure the only one with em is 4.

No, it's perfectly consistent*, it's not like the game randomly changes the size of enemy hitboxes on you. It's just that the hitboxes they currently have aren't intuitive at all.

*Multiplayer excluded, but that's because of lag, not combat itself.

Ender pearls have gone from being worthless to being one of the most valuable mob drops. That on top of Enderman becoming more dangerous and possibly more rare, might make Ender pearls the most valuable item in SMP.

I just started playing minecraft again and my client runs out of memory(or just crashes) constantly. I have 4 gigs of ram so that shouldn't be an issue. Does anyone else have this problem?

I tried the fix in the OP with no luck.

The shortcut fix, which doesn't always work and makes me crash, but default loader doesn't.


1.8 has horrible memory issues and I hope 1.9 fixed it (probably not)

If you're x64 os, get x64 java.
You can download Java 7 from oracle which improves performance as well.
