Has anyone done that survey graph for the new terrain generation? I'm almost ready to give up and start strip mining for diamond. I've found 2 in caves.

I'm finding very few diamonds on the server that i play on, and i'm strip mining :(
An updated graph would be welcome to dissuade or confirm my suspicions that diamonds are rarer now.

Not that you're the first person to get this wrong, but strip mining invovles mining at the surface. It should probably be called drift mining.

yeah, my mistake, i dig down to y=16 or so and mine parallel tunnels 4 blocks apart.

For those of you wondering about ore distributions, I'm creating a spreadsheet that lists them and graphs them out. It will take a while, but I do have results on diamonds in 1.9pre (with structures on). Based on a map of 13413 chunks, roughly centered at the origin, there are about 2 diamonds per chunk now, which, if the wiki is correct, is about half what it used to be. Diamonds are still concentrated around lava level. Counting the lowest block as y = 0, most diamonds can be found at y values from 7 to 14, with slightly more at the higher end of that range.

In short: Yes, diamonds are rarer now. No, the optimal mining depth has not changed. For best results, mine directly above the lava layer (which still ends at y = 12). You'll find diamonds about 1 every 40 meters that way. You could mine one block lower for slightly more diamonds, but the increase is minuscule at that depth. You can be safer and mine a block higher for less chance of falling into lava, but your chances decrease to 1 in 45 meters.

thank you, i knew i wasn't going crazy.

Also, I think if you have "houses" that your villagers can never get to (either under them or in the air) They will still breed in order to reach their maximum level. However since none of them can actually get to the house, it's still looks available to them and they keep breeding.

Edit: watch this, Docm explains some of it.

Yeah, this is sort of the understanding my experiments have led me to.
I play on the goon server mehcraft and there are several really nice towns people have build, that I'd like to over populate with villagers, but so far having hundreds of door hidden under the streets has'nt worked, the villagers are "content" with the doors above ground.

I just cleared out a 40x40 area (no TNT allowed on the server), and it would have been nice to just periodically dump stuff into a hopper rather than opening the furnace, putting one kind of ore and an appropriate amount of coal in, and then removing the finished product.

One reason hoppers might not work with furnace's, where would the exp go?

Not exactly possible with the current game engine, there isn't enough data that a block can hold to pull this off. If I remember correctly blocks can hold something like four or so bits of data. You need to be able to store information for every combination of slabs, which is a ton now. That is the reason Jeb has given for not doing it, the game engine just doesn't support the needed block data. It was the same reason why double doors worked really goddamn poorly for the longest time, they were trying to figure out how to store six bits of data into four.

Anyone know how the hell redpower manages to pull it off?

Lever turns it on and off.
It'll burn out if you just use one repeater on the first setting, second should be fine.
It sadly will get stuck if the chunk it's in unloads/reloads
so...

This shouldn't.

sucks when i go eleventy billion blocks to get her the special pink or purple flowers for dye.

To expand on what Jamesman just seid, incase you don't know, you can use bonemeal on grass blocks
to grow tall grass and some random flowers depending on biome. Also use bonemeal on flower bushes
to make them drop more bushes and on tall grass/ferns to make them double tall grass/ferns.

Also sorry if this is not the thread but posted this in the modding thread and got no response:

Best piece of advice with modpacks I can give is learn to use NEI.
That big list of items on the right makes life so much easyer.
Playing in MP should have recipe mode on by default, for SP hit the options
button in the bottom left and them the mode button, if you want to cheat later
you can always change back. The bar at the bottom is a search bar. Now when you
want to know the recipe for something, search and left click on it or right click
to see what recipes it's used in.

The <>arrows at the bottom show you alt recipes, there may be a lot and not always
the best is shown first, the ones at the top cycle through the differnt types of
crafting, bench/furnace/etc.
If you're "inside" a crafting bench there will also be a ? button next to each recipe,
this overlays the items needed onto the bench.
Anyway that's the basics.
As for power, I'd start with a bucket of water some coal and a thermal expansion steam engine.
