I can't find the source at the moment but I am certain it is NOT a new mode, a lot of people made this mistake based on a previously talked about "Adventure Mode" Notch intended to add. This update has nothing to do with that as far as I can tell.

Purported Adventure Mode features were things like removing the ability to break blocks and adding spawnable mobs, to facilitate adventure map creation.

Yeah, this. XP, magic, and NPCs and such are coming to the game proper, but all Adventure Mode was ever supposed to be was a setting that reinforced the rules of user created adventure maps.
Doesn't sound like we're getting it with 1.8 though.

So Notch has mentioned introducing alchemy to the game in the past, and recently the Yogscast dude's showcased a somewhat interesting mod called "Equivalent Exchange" it has some neat ideas, but a lot of ridiculous and complicated things as well.

Mostly I liked the main concept, the exchange, you craft a philospher's stone and then can use it to upgrade dirt to cobblestone, cobblestone to redstone, and then up through iron, gold, and diamond.
It's just a really neat aspect I'd like to see added to the game.

Really though, any form of magic being added to the game would be nice, and maybe my dreams of summoning creepers could finally be brought to life:

I think the best effect the food bar could have is a positive one. Instead of punishing the player for not eating he should be rewarded for keeping it full. Health regeneration, sprinting, more damage/speed while fighting and faster mining would all be excellent motivations to keep fed. Lowering my health though, i feel pushed around. Which kinda does not fit into minecrafts general design, i think.

Eh, it'll only kill you if you're playing on hard, and even then it likely won't be a big deal, other than the first few days, it's ridiculously easy to have a surplus of food, and food will be stackable again, so even better.
It really needs a negative side in order to have a positive.

It's kind of like the talk about getting killed that was going on earlier, someone said they liked the danger of being killed, but didn't like the penalty.
Well, if the penalty didn't exist, neither would the risk and excitement. There should be penalties to dying, currently it's just warp back to spawn, you don't lose your items unless you're dumb and fall into lava, or you don't think ahead enough to keep some spare armour and weapons at your spawn (seriously, do it, life will be much easier.)
I'm looking forward to more penalties honestly, lately when I've been playing multiplayer and have been low on health, rather than finding food, I've just been packing my items away and killing myself. That's hilariously broken. EXP and perks are gonna be awesome.

Most people here agree (save some who prefer a more creative-mode style means of play or don't view that kind of penalty as necessary at all), the sentiment is just that the penalty is disproportionately frustrating and makes the game less fun, not more.
We haven't been saying there needs to be no penalty.

Vocal majorities are usually minorities, especially when bitching about game mechanics.
Regardless
1. The penalty, isn't bad, unless you fall into lava, getting your items back is always easy.
2. If the penalty didn't exist, I'm completely positive a majority of you wouldn't be playing the game. It's the only risk that exists.
3. I refuse to believe that anyone has completely stopped playing because they got killed or fell into lava.

1. No, it's not always easy. Especially when you're neck-deep in a cave system near bedrock far from spawn. And even if that's the case, what possible harm could it do to at the very least add a death chest system?
2. Again, most people are not arguing for a complete removal of all penalties, you don't need to disprove this.
3. I don't know about permanently but even in these threads plenty of people have talked about stepping away from the game because they fell in lava because of one errant mis-step.

Well, if you're adding a deathchest, you are completely removing the penalty. So, you're contradicting yourself.

Nobody would post "Whelp, a creeper killed me while I was in my mine, good thing all my diamonds are in my deathchest, jeez what a swell game!"

I'm not arguing the core mechanics. I'm just saying, just because the game can be frustrating doesn't mean it's bad.

2. Actually being able to gather apples from trees, either by way of having each Leaf Block have a 1/1,000 chance of spawning as an Appled Leaf Block or random apple trees growing in the wild?

1. They have talked about having animals not despawn, and animal husbandry being a thing. I don't think they've really said much about it though.

2. There was a mod that had peaches hanging from trees. When you hit them, they became living bouncing creatures, which was odd. But they didn't look bad hanging under the tree, so hanging apples would likely work.

Back in the Indev days, you could choose world types.
Normal, Hell (a lot like the Nether is today, I suppose), Paradise (always day), and Forest (foggy, dark, mobs about, kind of what rain does these days)
And then you could choose a normal map (square with invisible walls), islands (smaller but the the better looking option), and floating islands (fun but dangerous).
