I've been out of the internet for a good five months and minecraft for about a year. Any giant awesome new points i should know about?

I got the Tekkit mod pack, whenever I fire up Minecraft now it runs fine for a couple of minutes then the framerate takes a giant poo poo. Any ideas why this could be? It's a shame because it seems pretty cool.
