I also don't know why someone hasn't made a roguelike addon for minecraft. Would it be that hard to change the cave system into something that makes floors, and then implant random spawners and chests on each floor?
I'm pretty sure MCDungeon does what you're talking about, but it's a tool you run after you've genned a world and not an addon that changes how anything generates.

Breaking every mod every time is more a side effect of mods being written using decompiled and deobfuscated source than some nefarious plot. Once the API is released that'll change somewhat, but until then it's kind of misguided to treat mod incompatability as a black mark against patching.

Putting more cooks in the kitchen isn't going to simmer the stew any faster, just like putting dollar values in italics isn't going to impress the codebase enough that it'll unfuck itself.
The time it's taken for the API to happen is frustrating, sure, but given the way Mojang seems to be run it's probably better that there are only a few people working on it in peace while Notch comes up with some baller rear end microtransaction based marbles game.

What? This comparison doesn't make any sense. Adding more developers to a project does speed it up, or do you think that it would've taken one developer the same amount of time to code a modern day big budget video game than it does the entire teams that they have to do it now.
I suppose we both exaggerated our point a bit, but yeah - You're right. It's just that Mojang has a pretty bad track record with regards to hiring folks to work on Minecraft, what with siphoning nearly all of them off to Scrolls, Cobalt, or that space game with the wobbly light. The pace they've set is slower than I'd like personally, but the alternative seems to be pulling everybody off of it to start another side-project or fedora competition or nerf war.

If you really want to you can write all the recipes in the game, but there is a wiki for that.
"There's a wiki for that" is not a solution to the "A wiki is mandatory for playing this game" problem. The recipes are not intuitive, requiring a third-party website to explain how to do the most basic things is kinda whack.

A crafting guide in the escape menu would be nice, even if it's just flat-out reproduction of NEI's recipe list. As it stands, for a first time player who only knows that Minecraft is the game where the cactus men say SSSSSS, it's a black box. Punch a sheep, punch a tree, smash a pig with that log, now what?

Googling is easy, but it should not be necessary.
If you take another ludicrously popular game as an example - WoW added a dungeon guide to the stock interface. It's not the best, but it's there - A button on the interface that's easy to find, you can push it to get information about encounters without tabbing out. It's not as good as going to sickasswowstrats.net, but that it's present at all has put important information front-and-center for tons of people who otherwise wouldn't give a second thought to it.

Minecraft is better when you know lots of computer words cause you can be like "This game does not have enough marching cubes"
