The on-device translation feature is quite nice, and technically AI. The "suggest other tabs to go in a tab group" feature seems benign, though more niche.

The weirdness stopped after I updated firefox yesterday. The entire left sidebar wasn't loading for me at all and the regular feed stopped loading videos after a previews loaded. Seems to be fine for me now on multiple computers. But maybe I just fell out of one of the A/B groups, there was talk about it in the Adblocker thread:

But uBO Lite updated today. I wouldn't be surprised if Google has new anti-adblock poo poo ready in the chamber that they push live after a uBOL release.

It sounds like a new round of the usual A/B stuff. They don't seem to be able to maintain it on a large scale, because the more people that are affected, the faster adblockers work around it.

They're definitely still flagging a minority of accounts for heavier stuff that uBlock has never helped with, and I have to clear cookies and log back in every day if I want to ever view a video while logged in. Sometimes even that doesn't work. But disposable containers and/or private windows in Firefox still often work as long as uBlock filters are up to date.

I am randomly not getting yt pages loading since I think yesterday. Only the top bar loads but nothing except a spinner below it. Reloading the page seems less effective than reopening the video in a separate tab for fixing it, for whatever reason, probably just placebo. Seems like mostly ineffective anti-adblock measures to me but IDK.

uBlock Origin released an update that's reluctant to install for some people. If you don't have the update, Youtube pages will completely break.

You can check in the Addons panel - if you have version 1.67, you have the update. If not, try restarting your browser.

yes and yes

youtube does not really give a poo poo about firefox ux, and has a long and storied history of saying "look, if firefox wants the full experience, it can adopt the standards chrome engineers have submitted to whatwg and fix bugs with their implementation"

google's often not wrong about moving standards forward (though their good faith engineering and standard work re, say, HTML5 video are marred by their less good faith efforts re "look at this cool public standard for adtech! wowee! ADOPT IT OR DIE, NON-CHOMES"), nor are they wrong about mozilla often being slow and less bug free out the gate than chromium. they should also be keenly aware of why that is, and why it's harder for other browsers to keep pace with the nearly antitrust ejected armies of top developers employed to write chrome and web standards first implemented by chrome, and aware that despite their engineering acumen they're a bit afoul of the long-stricken "don't be evil" slogan rather often, even if unintentionally, though sheer virtue of operating a powerful monopolistic influence on the ecosystem

the greyer behavior on general web standards aside, yes, they have a vested interest in continuing the adblocker arms race, even if they often lose, because despite the manifest v3 debacle, the sizable minority of "user agents are what they say on the tin" crowd has its own vested interests in opposition. they're never going to reach common ground, it's like asking a virus to reach common ground with its targets--if they do, they stop being that thing by definition. as consequence, poo poo breaks sometimes, it just usually gets fixed in short order

This was true 4+ years ago, but I'm not sure it is at this point. Mozilla has introduced some annoying UI bugs lately in their quest to 'improve' the sidebar, but overall I still find FF to be a much faster and better experience than Chromium for most sites and on most hardware, with or without extensions.

That's especially true with RAM limitations, since Chromium is very memory inefficient these days. I tried using Brave and Edge on an 8GB laptop a few months ago, and both would run out of memory after a dozen tabs. Firefox worked fine, and I never hit a tab limit nor saw any slowdowns or swapping.

it was so refreshing that they added "gently caress off, AI" to the context menu. I don't remember what ai they were pushing or the wording, I just saw "make this dogshit go away" and smashed it like the hammer of god.

Other than keeping ublock updated, my youtube experience has been vastly improved (restored) by disabling IPv6 in Firefox. My ISP just doesn't support it. I assume YT tries to make a bunch of calls over IPv6 and then falls back to IPv4 when those don't work? And maybe there's some script to detect it and disable it, but that script is blocked by ublock or maybe google just don't care.

Setting network.dns.disableIPv6 = true in about :config fixed all those micro-freezes and delayed responses to pausing etc. that I had.

This... shouldn't quite be what's happening; the scripts running on a website are generally not* making direct ip connections. They're going through DNS like anything else.

So if this really fixed things and wasn't just coincidence / apophenia, you might want to check your router instead. If it's relatively new and has ipv6 turned on by default, it may be giving your devices v6 addresses inside your network.

This could be encouraging the device to do v6 DNS lookups (or firefox, since ff defaults to doing its own DNS queries). This could result in all sorts of timeouts and delays if you have ipv6 getting dropped at the router due to bad configuration. There should be router settings that allow ipv6 inside your network without bad effects, but that's fairly pointless for a home network.

it doubly owns because they connected the ground-up bookstore directly to the controls and let it poo poo out a series of tokens that are statistically likely to approve the changes it made, even when it failed to output anything at all. just straight-up replacing entire articles with an error message.

and repeatedly de-localizing images.

and submitting the same changes over and over despite them being rejected each time.

"sorry you don't like our plagiarism blender, but please take your concerns offline where there's no record of them because we must present a united positive front regarding our abuse of matrix math." was the perfect dollop of rancid dogshit on the vomit sundae.

the "reasoning" for rolling in the stolen slurry in the first place was that it takes too long to translate things, when the translation team pointed out that they weren't even allowed to translate until content marked their changes as complete, and content never bothered because only english matters.

Of course IPv6 is disabled in my router yeah. And it's not like I've debugged the calls or anything, but I just assumed it would be regular calls to foo6.yt.com or whatever with just an AAAA record or something.

It's only been an issue with YouTube and I can't imagine any limit to how "really really stupid" in the name of optimizations or ads.
