My grandma spent her late 90s in her former high school that was converted into assisted living apartments setup fairly similar to this. They were finished much nicer though, with plaster ceilings in the halls and murals everywhere. Her cognition actually improved after moving in.

My personal useless/difficult/odd house modification I have always wanted is to have the master bedroom be like the Captain's cabin on an 18-19th century ship of the line. Not so much the scurvy or salt water or cannon, but to have a wall that has large sloped windows like the stern of the ships.

I live in a row house and I can cut off the water to my other neighbour's entire apartment with the valve in my bathroom. It also cuts off water in my apartment except for the toilet seat in said bathroom. I'm sure there were reasons.
