A documentary about shoegazing/dream pop called Beautiful Noise has been in production for a looong time, but it finally has a trailer:

It seems interesting since it is mainly interviews and the whole genre is still a bit obscure. I have looked forward to it for ages and can't wait for its completion.

This is now all but ready for release since they reached their Kickstarter goal for legal and licensing costs :)

Following on from Beautiful Noise news, there are a couple of other documentaries worth checking out- Anyone Can Play Guitar about the '90s Oxford scene (so Ride, Swervedriver) and Upside Down - The Creation Records Story. Alan McGee does come across as a bit of a self-important twat but there's no denying having the lion's share of essential acts of the genre was down to more than just luck. One gets the feeling with the way the label seemed to be run it was a miracle it lasted as long and was able to release as much as it did! (Too bad Adorable didn't even get a single mention in the entire doco though)

Glad to see you mention them. Adorable's Against Perfection is one of the most perfect examples of britpop/shoegaze that I know of. I put it right up there with things like Longwave's The Strangest Things and so on. Just a fantastic album by a critically overlooked band. All of you should check 'em out.

Indeed, and Against Perfection is surely the link between shoegaze and britpop- combining the sound of the former with the attitude of the latter.

Their second (and last) album I would describe as more studied and mature, but still excellent and well worth tracking down.

A little birdie told me that the Ride one will happen, just not yet. So I'd imagine once the Beady Eye new campaign is out of the way...

However, I wouldn't hold your breath (no pun intended) on the Slowdive one at all - really don't think that'll happen.

Robert Hampson has numerous times said "never" to Loop reforming and, well.... here we are :)

Not too many bands that can get away with playing their debut album live in its entirety and not lose the crowd...

Swervedriver did, and they were (again) excellent. Ive seen them several times since the early '90s and they are as good if not better now, played for 2 hours too...

Swervedriver linked this today: http://www.amoeba.com/blog/2014/03/pst/the-20-best-shoegaze-albums.html

"Shoegaze? Pffft!"

Some really odd choices, like I wouldn't put Catherine Wheel in that bracket, but basically all those albums are worth checking out if you haven't.

Yes if anything the first CW album is the more obvious "shoegaze" choice, but both albums are excellent and well worth a listen. (unfortunately the same cant be said for the albums that followed...)

New album from The Black Ryder next month (first album was great, this is a live track from it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpEFxcm1kDw)

Everyone should go see Swervedriver - live they are as good if not better than they were in the '90s.

My favourite Curve track is No Escape from Heaven from the radio sessions.... so goood :)

Strange to see no real mention of the new Swervedriver album, "I Wasn't Born To Lose You", out on March 3rd!
It's streaming on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2015/02/22/387539394/first-listen-swervedriver-i-wasnt-born-to-lose-you

I think it's pretty cool. The first track, Autodidact, has all the stuff I love about Swervedriver: catchy hooks, swirling guitars, apocalyptic breakdown, hypnotic grooves.

Theres nothing wrong with it as such, but it just continues Adam Franklin's solo style of late, which is a long way from the intensity of Raise or Mezcal Head and for that matter any Shoegaze style.

As ive said before, it is still totally worthwhile catching them live though

i like this, reminds me of The Voices

In other news, saw Swervedriver again the other night and they were excellent... "new" drummer and ex- Supergrass bass player maybe responsible for tweaking some of the older material so it sounds even better than before?

Not quite so sold on new Nothing album though... ACD is a great track but the rest lacks the bite and hooks that the brilliant first album had...

ROFLBOT

The last Nothing album which wasn't exactly mind blowing and was released all of what? 4 months ago, makes the Top albums of all time? Really?:colbert:

JAMC for me is weird because despite being a big fan I don't associate them with Shoegaze at all, though if listened to in isolation no doubt their first few albums would qualify. Maybe because they predate the whole genre?

They're not a straight up shoegaze band and a lot of their stuff doesn't sound shoegazey at all but some of their songs definitely have shoegaze elements. Hell, Minerva was a big radio single for them 20 years ago and my first exposure to them and that song has shoegaze vibes.

But boy was this a grower, i cant get some of the songs out of my head now hahaha
