Is Hori's Fighting Commander 3 Pro for the PS3 any good?
(ideally I'd get a NeoGeo or Saturn style pad, but I'm considering joining in on an Amazon group purchase, couldn't find those there)

I know people here favor joysticks, but I don't do tournaments (often, anyway) seriously enough to justify a large investment in a mostly unfamiliar controller type. I'm fine with having something with the 6 buttons in the front, but a SF4 MadCatz pad I had before didn't last me more than a few months before it locked the D-pad in the down direction, making it unusable - it would be nice to get something with a similar shape and more durable, and Hori seems famous enough to deliver, but I'm unsure...
That's the pad I use. Seems to work okay.

e: Wait no I use the FC3, not the FC3 Pro. I can't vouch for the pro version, but presumably it's for pros.

I wasn't really that interested in playing the game in its current state. I'm one of those fellows who spends more time in training room than running casuals because I don't learn well on the fly (execution-wise.) I mostly just wanted to say hi to JMcrofts, ask him a few questions about his development experience, then buy him a beer or something because he's a nice guy who often makes posts about random characters that helps me learn a bit more about the matchup.

It just wasn't worth the trouble of going up to a group of people and nervously saying "oh hey is JMcrofts here, I know you from the INTERNET!" Not to mention I get pretty nervous when I'm high and I'm pretty sure Yipes christened our specific room "The Green Roof Inn" so you can imagine.

E: I'm not trying to brag about getting high or something stupid. I have a medical card because of my disease so it is what it is. I just wasn't prepared for this weekend and my brain moves faster than my mouth after I smoke so I played a few rounds of SG then went back to the room for MvC2/SSF4 or whatever. I dunno how some of the people stayed in Momo's all day with how packed and hot it was.

SB6 was pretty loving amazing though and I'll see you all at winterbrawl!
I don't really learn that well on the fly either, but I still wanted to play some casuals because I like playing video games. I did eventually figure out through trial and error which of Peacock's attacks is her launcher (it's standing medium kick). I didn't win a single round but I still had fun :)

I just made an educated guess as to who jmcrofts was, I figured he was the guy who seemed to know the most about the game. I wasn't high though so maybe that helped.

Is there a particular reason why most players at MLG are playing MK/SC5 with controllers instead of sticks? Aside from personal preferences, are inputs somehow easier on controllers for those games?
I play most games on stick but MK9 I can only play on pad. That game just feels weird to me on stick, mostly because of EX moves. You enhance a move by pressing block at the same time you hit the attack button (like back, forward + 2 + block), and I never found a layout for stick where it felt natural to push an attack button and block at the same time while also being able to use block to, like, block. Also the only way to dash is to double tap forward which also feels better on pad than on stick.

On the other hand CD Jr only plays MK9 on stick and he just won MLG so there's probably something to that.

Something being intuitive, by definition, is a personal and subjective thing. I can totally see how hitstun scaling is more intuitive because combo creation is basically "these things work at the start of the combo, these things work towards the middle, and these things only work at the end". Whereas in Skullgirls you have to be much more cognizant and reason with "wait, did I start a string with this move earlier when I was confirming from an awkward situation or recovering from mistiming something?"
I've had the same issue in games with gravity scaling, though. Like I'll get a weird hit confirm into a combo that I don't usually do, and then towards the middle or end or whatever I won't be sure if I've got enough gravity left in the gravity tanks to do the move I want to do.
