I wouldn't get your hopes up. Making Tekken work well online is really difficult, and honestly I don't think Harada is all that interested in focusing on netcode. Tekken does gangbusters at arcades and sells very healthy numbers on consoles, so I think he just doesn't see it as a development priority.

Soul Calibur 5 has good netcode so there is technology within Namco to make it work well. They just need to share their technology between teams, which probably won't happen. :(

On the topic of TTT2, I just got a Bana Passport and played a few games before I went home and registered it. It remembered my wins and losses but I don't have any fight money. Do I have to have registered the card to an account before I receive fight money? I need to put a siren on Heihachi's head.

To answer my own question in case anyone is curious, once you have made an account with a Bana Passport online you start getting gold from fights. You get like 50 gold for beating ghosts and 1,000+ for beating other players in person. Heihachi head siren costs over 600,000 gold. :stare: I'm going to need to win a lot of jackpots.

At the risk of starting a flame war and possibly getting myself probated, is there a reason for the disdain some fighting game enthusiasts seem to have for Smash Bros.? A few friends introduced me to the competitive scene, and while I never considered it a fighting game in the past, I'm having a difficult time reconciling my previous views with my current understanding of how the game works.

What, from the fighting game player's standpoint, specifically differentiates Smash Bros. out of the genre? The play mechanics are different, obviously, but on a more conceptual level, I'm having trouble seeing the dividing line.

Smash Bros. is not designed to be a serious competitive game and to make it one the people who play need to change the rules in game as well as enforce rules outside of the game. It can be hard to take seriously as an outsider when there are so many rules in place, such as how many times a player can grab a ledge. The giant rule set can be found here: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?p=12492158

There are also issues of who gets player 1 and who gets player 2, as the game decides the winner of some outcomes based on controller port.

quote:

If there is a dispute in controller port selection or initiating Stage Strike use the following method:
Teams will use a random method such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, Coin Flip, or Game and Watch Judgment, where the winner selects either first choice in port selection or first choice in stage striking. Whichever team does not receive first choice in port selection will be compensated with first choice in stage striking.
Note: In Doubles, port selection is ordered 1-2-2-1 fashion (with Team-1 having first choice in controller slot select, Team-2 having both second and third choice, and the final slot going to Team-1).

In general the scene behind it seems to have forced it to become a competitive game, rather than it naturally being one.

How the hell could this even be put in as a thing :psyduck:

I found a wiki page explaining it here. http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/Port_priority

An example:

quote:

Grabbing
In Melee, if two opponents attempt to grab each other, and both grab hitboxes connect at the same time, only one player will end up grabbing the other, since two players cannot be grabbed and held at the same time. The above also applies to two players' simultaneous use of Mewtwo's Confusion in Melee. Port priority determines that the player with the lowest port, that is, closest to P1, is awarded with the grab. Essentially, this means that P1 is always awarded with the grab, and P4 is never awarded with it. In this case, P1 > P2 > P3 > P4.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 cabs were updated to Tekken Unlimited today, I got a chance to mess around with it for about an hour. The natural buffs for solo seem like it could be okay to deal with if you are a tag player, but the two rounds of rage just seems silly. I'm not really liking this update, a short simple combo can be devastating with the buffs and rage added on for solo players. I only played one person who used solo mode and put in an extra credit to compare damage directly and I don't think that solo makes tag completely useless, though it does seem like it could be a safer option and frustrating for people who prefer tag.

The game still seems really fun and the addition of solo mode won't stop me from playing, but it does seem a bit crazy and unnecessary from first impressions.

Edit: Okay, this update is worth it for the crazy new items.

EDIT: quote http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/egm-preview-tekken-tag-tournament-2/

“We think [Tag Tournament 2] is so unique that if we were to put out Tekken 7, for example, and it only had one versus one, we might get a lot of people out there who ask us why not use the previous format, where you can do two on one, two on two, and one on one? So, we’re not sure, but this could become the standard [for Tekken].”

I wouldn't have a problem with solo if the buffs weren't so completely horrible and brain dead.

She's interesting in that it shows how the Tekken team would introduce more traditional 2d style fireballs into their 3d game. She apparently has the smallest moves list in the game at ~40 and has no 10 string combos, which are kinda pointless anyway. If TxSF is still being made, she might be a clue as to how they would transfer Street Fighter characters into Tekken.

It's not worth trying to unlock her though, it requires a crazy amount of grinding.

I don't really get it, since there isn't anything different enough about T7 for it to make sense to be like "I don't like Tekken but this looks awesome!"

Unless you really like Ultras I guess, but those are dumb.

Tekken 7 has added a lot of flash in it's presentation with camera cuts, slowdown, crazier hit sparks, etc. to try and dupe new people into thinking the game has changed when it hasn't. It's a good way of attracting new players without alienating people who like the series. The RAGE ARTS aren't even very useful in the game right now, so new players who want to watch a cool cutscene can throw them out there while veterans don't use them outside of some specific combo situations.

I definitely think 7 will be a good entry point for people new to the series though. Armor moves help you get out of blind pressure when you dont know what to duck or step, simplified throw techs will reduce the training mode throw tech practice from 90 hours to 60 hours, the bound replacement and no tagging means simpler combos and life management.
