Yes.
Kalmah's last album was really good but otherwise they have always been kind of an unfortunate in-betweener for me. Like, they make perfectly competent melodeath, but all the adjacent bands have always appealed to me more in one way or another.

EDIT: goddamn page snipe again. Here's one of those adjacent bands:

Alright so you guys pretty much ruined the last thread with your terrible opinions. Then I honestly felt like I was in high school again because someone was actually loving talking about Machine Head. So basically I'm rebooting this thread because the other one was getting long anyways. What's going to happen here? You'll probably run it into the ground again.

So anyways I've been off in my own world and there hasn't been a whole lot of legitimate contenders for album of the year except maybe the new Sonne Adam or Necros Christos. Both of these bands put out stellar releases this year, and if you like actual death metal and not some clicky bass drum watered-downed technical pirate-metal jazz-infusion shitfest then check them out.

also whats its called when you consider that melody and thrash/death are mutually exclusive. like "melodic death metal" is like saying "angelic satan music", like, you can think you're creating it because you're mixing the sounds but the reality is those concepts are mutually exclusive and are the musical equivalent of pouring hot beef oil into a sink of cold water

kinda

like when I listen to kill em all, I can hear some melody.. but it's not terrible

and having some kind of basic rythmic chord changes are ok

but basically.. you need a mostly atonal sound and perhaps key changes.. but as soon as you've got actual chordal/melody.. you've entered this state where you are no longer death or thrash.. but some kind of sad deathcore rip off.. idk how to explain it to someone because if they fundamentally don't hear it maybe they never will

the riffs at 1:50 are getting close to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjqSdCp6bwc

idk what to say. we all have different standards. I don't really do moderation so.. wgaf

Steve who runs studio emissary just re-rolled Oration into Ascension. The last Oration was amazing as well, so i was stoked to hear that Emissary just ended Oration and started it up again as Ascension.

I didn't really like Kalmah until Pekka changed his vocal style on The Black Waltz. I know a lot of people poo poo on that record because its production was pretty bad, but this poo poo is good:

Spring break forever
Because I'm an irresponsible dumbass, I spent from mid-2017 up until three weeks ago on either pre-trial supervision or probation stemming from a DUI (not my first, again, I am stupid!), which led to me having basically no life for two years while I buried myself in work and otherwise existed in a state of constant anxiety. Which is to say: I managed to miss that one of my favorite bands, Deafheaven, released an album last year while I was fresh out of jail! And it's loving amazing and I love it so much! New Bermuda somewhat came and went for me (though I'm putting it back in the rotation to get a better feel for it), but between Sunbather and Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, I think Deafheaven have cemented themselves as my favorite working band, with apologies to Full of Hell, Swans, The Body, and anybody else.

Speaking of which, Full of Hell show a couple of weeks ago was fantastic. Openers were Genocidal Pact (cool) and Primitive Man (super powerful and intense band, I need to listen to more of their poo poo), but Full of Hell just brought the loving pain. Such brief, overwhelming, intense bursts of energy. The crowd (Riot Room in Kansas City, MO) wasn't wall-to-wall or anything, but everybody was either locked in or just beating the poo poo out of each other in the pit. Good times. I forgot how much I missed live music. The week before that I saw Refused, who blew the roof off Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS. (And they were the opener! Apologies to The Hives, but c'mon.)

All that being said: hit me with recommendations for the past few years, based on everything I just mentioned.

but now...

Now, I feed as

If you dig Deafheaven, what's your thoughts on their newest single they released over the winter, Black Brick? It was their opening track for their recent set while opening for Gojira on a string of dates. The audience flipped! It's seven and a half minutes of full on blackened thrash. No shoegaze in site.

Friday means release day!

Spell of Dark, atmoblack
Abyssal, blackened death doom
The Meads of Asphodel should have a new album out today, all I can find are reviews of it though so it doesn't seem to be up quite yet via the normal channels. Great avant-bm
Same with Stworz, album released today but can't find it anywhere. Basically a better Drudkh
Organectomy, $l@mz

I'm sure I missed some stuff but it appears to be a pretty light release day.

Edit: Oh and obviously check https://fleshofthestars.bandcamp.com/ from a few posts up
