So I went to the Gojira show yesterday...my god. Last time I saw them was in 09 I think, at a really lovely venue(logan square auditorium) with a crowd of like 40 people. They filled up House of Blues now, had to be near a thousand people in that place. Good for them and all, but loving christ that crowd. During Devin there were multiple fights, multiple circle pits during devin songs that...dont really seem like pit songs. Felt like a Pantera show or some poo poo. Lots of Bros, rednecks, and hipsters. That alone wouldn't necessarily dissuade me but their newest album bores me and it makes me sad that they dont play anything off Terra Incognita(or the link) . Oh well, Deceased, Disinter(reunion show), Hell Awaits this Saturday in Chicago! And my friend won a 400 dollar super bowl pool so hes buyin beer all night, hell yea.

I have been listening to Legend a lot lately. They put out one album in 1979 before the drummer found god and gave up music, and the frontman died a few years later. They were an excellent trio making epic heavy metal with some prog rock and jazz fusion mixed in there. If you're looking them up, they're from New Haven, CT and they're listed on MA as Epic Traditonal/Heavy Metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_JWcHIIGyI The epic heavy metal rotation has also included Manilla Road, Longings Past, and Candlemass. Some Enchanter in there too, which is an earlier incarnation of Longings Past with a much more ridiculous vocalist - the guitarist struggles on vocals when he took over, but the concepts of their two albums are good enough to make up for it. The way this song builds up is awesome, it's structurally a bit similar to how "Don't Stop Believing" builds up for the whole song and only has the chorus/climax at the end. It's a lot better than Foreigner though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n_vMIskFNw

Okay goons, introduce me to some new metal! Stuff I really like, in no particular order: Megadeth Slayer Pantera Machine Head Mastodon I know, I know, mostly well-known acts. Stuff I don't like: anything with Cookie Monster type vocals. Beyond that, I'll give anything heavy a listen. I just want to be able to understand the lyrics and hear someone actually singing rather than just screaming. What say you, Metal thread?

Old Blind Guardian, since you like thrashier stuff. If you're down with power metal and more symphonic metal than later Blind Guardian is awesome too. The first couple of Shadows Fall albums are pretty good if you can handle a mix of screaming/growling and singing.

Morbid Saint - Really brutal thrash metal, the vocals are sharp shouts, fairly extreme but not at all cookie-monster like. Listen to "Spectrum of Death". If you're familiar with better known bands, I'd assume you know Testament and High on Fire. e: Oh yeah, and it wouldn't be a place where metalheads recommend thrash/groove bands without a mention of Demolition Hammer.

I want to say that early Kreator is good if you're big on Slayer. Destruction may be good as well but I've always considered it the weakest of the Teutonic Thrash trio. If you like Kreator then you can always branch out to Sodom. Kreator is also good for breaking the ice if you're interested in ever branching out to death metal since it does share SOME elements, in my opinion at least. Also try Forbidden, Flotsam and Jetsam, Overkill, Testament for bands that harken more towards Megadeth. They may not be exactly the same as Megadeth but they share some nice traits with them. Flotsam and Jetsam varies a LOT through their discography, Overkill had a groove metal phase in which they tried to imitate Pantera, and Testament flirted with death metal for a while.

If you ever did want to branch out into growly vocals, Amon Amarth really helped me because they're still pretty melodic. Even though I don't listen to them much anymore, I still love Runes to my Memory. Now for some stuff you are a bit more likely to actually enjoy: Grand Magus Primordial Keep of Kalessin (newer stuff) Blind Guardian Baroness (I can't choose a song to link but if you like Mastodon you'll probably like Baroness. Same goes for Torche). Lamb of God Always preferred them to Machine Head personally.

The only Keep of Kalessin I can recommend is their full-length Armada and the EP they did with Attila Csihar and Frost, Reclaim. Their two albums since Armada are... not so good, I think. But I really do like that album and that EP.

Similarly, I never thought I'd branch off into gravelly vocals until I listened to Children of Bodom's Follow The Reaper album. Children of Decadence was my gateway drug song and it's been downhill from there. I think it was the way that the aggressive vocal style still seemed controlled and deliberate, and matched the melody of the song.

The first time I started liking gravelly vocals was actually a ska-punk band that I loved back in high school. That lead to lovely crust punk and then metal soon followed. I was looking through my old rear end ipod on the way to work one morning and remembered I had this, gave a listen and thought the songs still held up (mostly because I still knew all the words even 6 years later). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZajHtadE4I If it had a little more variety to the drum beat and some more palm muting during the verse it would be some straight up crossover. It's a shame the band doesn't really write many songs like this one since their bass player has one of my favorite vocal styles. Also to that guy that recommended Nocturnal Breed a while back: yes yes yes this is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much.

13 was just not thrashy enough. At times it seemed like Dave wanted to make a hard rock album if anything, so it came off as Countdown to Extinction part 2. It was definitely a letdown since Endgame was pretty thrashy. I've seen some interviews were he said that Super Collider will be heavy, dark, fast, and all those buzzwords, but who knows just what that even means.

Megadeth, Slayer and Motorhead need to stop putting out albums and just tour on their old poo poo. Play stuff they haven't done live, do something different than just cranking out lackluster albums when they have 20+ years of stuff they don't do on stage. People clearly line up around the block to see bands play entire classic albums live.

I received a press release of an Indian metal/hard-rock band called "Workshop".quote:HEAVY MENTAL BAND WORKSHOP (INDIA) RELEASES LYRIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE I started watching this video thinking that it was absolutely ridiculous, but it's not as bad. It has a pretty sweet guitar around the 2:10 mark (with a progressive feel to it, as it completely shifts tempo) and a fairly decent lyrical content. Definitely worth checking out (if nothing else, for the criticism to India's retarded -and thankfully increasingly rare- tradition of forced marriages... which is presented in a an incredibly childish way). Actually, now that I think about it, there is a fair amount of goofy stuff throughout (like the xylophone chorus in "Against the Gods") but I never found it too jarring (aside from the RARZ intro). Those are interesting fragments of the past. RARZ was put on there because it was the most likely to get radio play (the band had several albums worth of material written so they picked that one that was a bit outside of the style of the album) and the drum solo was common since hearing things like that at shows and on albums, especially with such a great drummer. Ray Frigon's drum kit back then was absolutely ridiculous, but right after the album was pressed, he found god, didn't have the heart to continue in the band when he lost interest, and sold his drum kit to pay off the recording costs. He picked up drumming a decade later and once again has a ridiculous drum kit. http://drumsinhisheart.weebly.com/pics.html Interestingly enough, a lot of the band's material that was never recorded leaned more towards jazz fusion. Ray Frigon suggested at one time that they have three bands - a keyboard-oriented prog rock band, a jazz fusion band, and Legend. Unfortunately, his only band I'm aware of since Legend, "Asaph", had two keyboard players and him on a ridiculous drum kit playing church/praise/worship music, and it wasn't something I liked. He does post drum solos on YouTube though: http://www.youtube.com/REFondrums Fred Melillo was in Earthlord with Phil Swanson more recently, it was good, though I lost the demo.
