For "metal out of nowhere!", what comes to mind for me is the bit in In The Loop where Toby goes to the death metal club with Anna (I think her name is Anna? [edit: the actress's name is Anna, oops, the character is Liza]), and bam, Cannabis Corpse live set out of nowhere. I loved that bit and wish I'd asked the band about it when I saw them last year.

I heard Anal oval office in a porn flick once. Also there was a really out of place Iron Maiden song during the climax of Dario Argento's Phenomena. And I swear that one of Tony Soprano's kids had a Nattens Madrigal-poster in their bedroom.

edit: of course there's also that South Park episode where Cartman refers to Slayer as death metal. Trey Parker really should be a big enough dork to know better.

My favorite metal from nowhere was an older episode of Bones.

Skeletal remains used by a Norwegian Black Metal Band lead the team to explore the underground music scene. Gordon-Gordon prepares to retire from psychology, but not before meeting with Sweets and helping Bones and Booth solve their current case. Written by Jesse Sanchez

Former Black Metal (a dark rock genre) band Spew member Mayhem, stage name of American Justin Dancy, is sent back to the US after his corpse was spread-eagled, Viking-style, on an ancient church crucifix in rural Norway and used for months as a prop by Norwegian band Skalle. Forensics reveal complex mutilations; subculture anthropology helps investigate suspects, including genre rivalry with Dark Metal, and hate for mainstream. Meanwhile, Bones finds whipping scars on Sweets' back and colleague Gordon-Gordon's (also a rock fan) scars on his soul.

While it wasn't a bad episode, it was pretty silly. Looks like someone heard about Mayhem, did a little reading on wiki, and thought it'd make for a good episode. It got a lot of things fairly accurate, but really blew some other things way out of proportion, even for a black metal fan.

edit: grammar

That was a good episode. And if I'm not mistaken we got to see Sweets in corpsepaint, which is just, just tops.

And of course, DevilDriver in Scrubs made for a great pair of five second "wtf"-cutaway gags.

Uh, so, the new Meshuggah is pretty terrible. There wasn't one catchy riff on the whole album. Every song sounds the same and it seems like they're doing all their riffs at half tempo. Everything is totally slowed down and boring. The only track that was even remotely interesting is Do Not Look Down.

Geeze, what a disappointment. And I thought Obzen was pretty killer too.

The Lemmy cameo ("I was editor of my school magazine!") was great in that. Also the rival band The Sons of Thunder was played by Galactic Cowboys.

I don't think anything will ever top the West Wing mention of Graveland and NSBM, that was such a weird, out-of-nowhere thing.

I'm also pretty sure I cast my vote for the late Mr. Aarseth by clicking on the heart next to his name at http://www.halehelter.no/. At first I was imagining a 747 totally covered in black and white corpse paint which'ed be hilarious, but then I read a bit more. Apparently they're only putting an image of the winning person on the tail of their planes. I hope they use this classic if he actually wins and they go through with it.

I voted for this- NO Air is amazingly cheap, even if they do charge you for every little thing, it's a great airline if you're on a budget (and don't feel the need to consume beverages in flight...).

Naming the band after an Entombed song and the album after a Carnage/Dismember song is perhaps taking it a bit too far for me to enjoy this, especially when they sound more like very early (and not very good) Edge of Sanity rather than either of the bands whose work they're pillaging for the sake of name recognition.

(I find it a bit too mechanical to even be reminiscent of the Stockholm scene, anyway. The great bands of that period were all loving sloppy and all the better for it. )

I feel the need to impress upon you how dirty and nasty this style should sound:

Dan Swano mixed that album so I understand why you're getting the Edge Of Sanity vibe. I thought the band was going for more of a Nihilist vibe than anything else and pulled it off pretty well while mixing in a couple other slower influences throughout the album.

I'd try and debate with you a little more, but I have been up for two days and am feeling a bit out of it. Meh.

So, the Pirate Bay's front page link is for the album "Abrasive Peace" by the Portuguese band Colosso, endorsed by the band itself so it's cool to torrent. If you're into tech death and were disappointed with Koloss you should give it a spin; I don't dig this style of metal normally but they pull it off extremely well for being a relative unknown.
