Aww the Rammstein thread seems to have slipped into oblivion. Seeing them on Saturday, psyched beyond all belief. I am new to metal. Very new. Entry-level, minimum wage new. I enjoy things in languages I do not or barely speak, it helps me to get them a little better. (German/Swedish are favourites) Aside from Rammstein which I stumbled upon years ago thanks to my strange 90 year old german professor, I've recently been swimming around in Opeth, Dimmu Borgir and Manowar. I'm finding myself more attracted to the grand, orchestral songs with less cookie monster vocals. I can enjoy female vocals to the extent of Nightwish but that's kind of pushing it. Anyone got any suggestions? I have pretty broad music tastes and want to explore metal a little further.

Regardless of personal taste for Metallica, those three albums are considered to be seminal thrash albums and I'd argue any modern metal band was at least partially influenced by one of them. Granted they're not in a foreign language or all that grand and orchestral (comedy option, the S&M album with the SFO), but as an intro to metal without being too extreme, they're a good starting place.

Strangely enough, my fiancee enjoys Amon Amarth as well - she doesn't typically like growls, but since Johan enunciates pretty well when he's singing, she likes them better. I was also going to mention Maiden, but you also seem to have that base covered. You might want to look into Turisas and some other folk-metal bands - Turisas is from Finland and sing in both English and Finnish. After you spent time listening to them you find it easier to get into other bands. If you aren't into growls it might be a power metal kick to help ya get into metal more. Therion isn't power metal but that's a good place to start. Maybe some Blind Guardian? The fact you are checking out Tyr rules.

They do have a rather harsh growling/snarling male vocalist, but maybe he's not too grating. Also, their female vocalist is absolutely stellar and the orchestrations are really grand. Then there's Kiuas who also get pretty bombastic. It's a drat shame the vocalist has left the band, he was really drat impressive with his powerful and varied delivery. Kamelot aren't that balls-out bombastic, but a lot of their stuff still has a certain sort of melodramatic sound to it. They've gotten a bit meh in the last few years, but albums like Karma and The Black Halo are fantastic. And to conclude I'll just toss out some random recommendations off the top of my head: Wuthering Heights play some sort of power/prog/folk/speed metal hybrid. Really energetic stuff, some ludicrously catchy choruses and one of the best heavy metal vocalists today. Also, much better lyrics than the average power metal band. They only have some cheesy synths instead of orchestrations, but holy poo poo if they still don't manage to sound larger than life. This is also thanks to the vocalist Daniel Heimann who has some incredible loving pipes. Seriously, god drat that guy can sing. And lastly, the ever awesome Blind Guardian. They started with pretty straightforward thrashy metal in the 80s, then evolved towards, uh, power metal I guess? They keep getting called that, but I've never really understood it. As much as the thread title shits on them, early Sonata Arctica is great gateway metal, as is Dream Theater if you like the prog sound at all. Same with Kamelot and Symphony X but less proggy. Manowar, Opeth, and Dimmu are kind of poo poo honestly, but not bad starters. To cover black metal, which you've dipped into with Dimmu, try out the classics, like Burzum, Bathory, Immortal, Darkthrone, Taake, Watain. Want to get into more atmospheric/american black metal, try Wolves in the Throne Room or Agalloch.

Has anyone here ever heard of a french metal band called Symbyosis? They did a big 2-CD release thing in 2005, and I've been listening to it a lot. I think it's pretty good! I posted about them a couple pages ago, but if you're into melodic death metal in the vein of Insomnium, the new In Mourning album, The Weight of Oceans, is really excellent. Unfortunately Spinefarm is absolutely abysmal about releasing records in the US in a timely fashion, so you may have to search around for it. The new Swallow the Sun came out in like February and I still can't find it anywhere. Seriously, how hard is it to get that digital copies up on iTunes/Amazon etc?

I love Therion but be warned, their albums vary greatly. I love them all for different reasons. I started with Secret of the Runes, and if you like that, Theli and Vovin are probably the proper next steps. Their later stuff is really good but really power-metally and quite a bit different than SotR. A friend pointed me towards French band The Great Old Ones, and from the samples on their Bandcamp, I think I'm in love. They're somewhere between spacey French black metal, and funeral doom. Oh, and Roadrunner UK/Canada is shutting down, with massive cuts to other offices (Germany etc). Bad news for Opeth and Mastodon, I guess.
