Anyway no, there's also an industrial beat, some strings and clean female vocals.

e: It's a lot more melodic and listenable than most of The Body's stuff tbh.

I think the Body are very hit or miss but my main issue with them is that Lemongrab is their vocalist. I have a high tolerance for weird vox but his are goofy enough to distract from the ugliness.

il_cornuto

I don't like that track but after the comments on the The Body track earlier I just have to check: you do hear the organ right? It's staticy but there's a clear melody there. It's honestly not that different from a lot of black metal in terms of burying the melody under distortion, just textured differently.

Also this is great too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFRoX3vIgew (video has a lot of flashing if that bothers you)

Something about clear vocals over distorted rhythmic noise really gets me when it's done well.

the mix has the organ super low, i hear it but barely even notice it changes

that full of hell track is a thing, i guess. not my cup of tea but it was more interesting than the other two

It only gets lovely when there's loads of posts about how people don't like something. It would be boring if Thread Approved death metal was the only thing that got posted.

e: A good example: I''ve hated all the "poppy metal" posted recently - and I love some stuff like Devin Townsend so it's not like the concept of poppy metal is anathema to me - but I haven't complained about it or told people to post good metal instead because I know some people like that stuff so them talking about it doesn't bother me.

The last few posts have featured discussion of a track and why people like it or don't like it based on how it sounds, which is more than often happens in this thread.

Big Devin fan here, and glad that DTP is taking a break. He needs some fresh ideas and collaborating with other people will bring out the best in him again. He's said himself that the later DTP stuff feels somewhat forced.

The Addicted! version of Hyperdrive is so SO good.

For me I think DTP peaked with Addicted!. Ghost+Deconstruction were good but I think at that point there was already signs of the pressure of making four albums back to back getting to him. Ki and Addicted felt a lot more natural. Not to say he hasn't had some awesome stuff since then but I think he really benefits from the time away from the grind.

I know nobody else listens to them, but FYI the new Therion is pretty great. I'm only halfway through but I'm really digging it. And there's a lot of it, at over three hours of music.

Reminds me a lot of Blind Guardian's Night at the Opera, which had to grow on me, but this is clicking pretty quick.

When I tried it I found it was THREE HOURS of very competent, very well made, very well produced, incredibly unmemorable Therion music.
None of it was bad, but I can't remember any of it now. I think it all just sort of slides into one.

There have been a few standout tracks for me (Dagger of God, Jewels from Afar, Night Reborn) but I think it's going to require a lot of listens to really be able to pick out some of the other songs.

It's supposed to be more 'opera' than 'three CDs' but honestly the songs don't flow well into each other and it seems to be to be three discs of a number of discrete, stand-alone music pieces.

I can't say I'm too thrilled with what I've been discovering so far, generally. I realize that a lot of metal is style over substance, but these genres have an inordinate amount of bands that very obviously focus WAY more of their efforts on hosed up covers and song titles than on the music itself. Their target demographic seems to be immature high school guys who love the August Underground films.

Yeah I went through this phase when I was in high school but now I really don't like that kind of stuff.

Edit: I've also discovered that I don't have the PhD required in Philosophy to understand or appreciate Obscura's lyrics.
