Totally Hot Take: I like the new Elder. Embers is the weakest song on the album.

I agree and I've been spinning the vinyl since it arrived. It's a good album, even if it's not very metal.

The new Xibalba is good, but I gently caress with Xibalba in general.

As for essential releases: the new Old Man Gloom is very good. Can't wait for the second album they'll drop this year.

Also for those that like their death metal stupid and hardcore-adjacent: the new Kruelty record should be right up your alley.

Plasma Ritual sounds like it might be tech death, so I'd be wary, but Crypt Fungus would be a must-listen

Agreed. My initial thought for Plasma Ritual would be like one of those science-fiction-themed tech-ish death bands that keep popping up right now, like Blood Incantation.

Crypt Fungus is an extremely good name and I would check them out.

Mgla are facist now too? God drat.

They release their albums on Mikko Aspa's label, which is called Northern Heritage. They are also part of the live version of Clandestine Blaze. When asked about it, they've repeatedly said that they are very ok with this and have no intention of changing any of that.

I mean, draw your own conclusions, but it seems pretty nazi to me.

Buy something by Implore. They're hella leftists and play pissed off HM2 crust/grind.

Remember that Bandcamp is waiving their cut on every first Friday of the month during the pandemic, to support artists.

Implore will be donating 100% of all purchases made today to Black Lives Matter and the National Bail Out Fund.

This rules, thanks for linking this.

Wormrot owns I saw them play a 10 minute set in a bar in LA and then they just stood around their merch table looking awkward the rest of the night

Never forget when wormrot played on a farm with goats just roaming around, disturbing the pit.

It was and it's another reason why Wormrot rules.

FYI for those that like this kind of stuff: the guitar player from Wormrot also plays in a great stoner/doom band:

Loving all the grind.

So i was revisiting zsumac last week and got to thinking that I'm not nearly as familiar with the range of Aaron Turner's work as i could be. Best place to start with Old Man Gloom? And what else do y'all like with his involvement? If you want to expand it to poo poo people from Isis have hosed with since they broke up that would be cool too. I liked that Palms record pretty well.

I think the most accessible Old Man Gloom album is probably No. I'd start there. That said, my favorite is Christmas. Their entire discography is good though, so I don't think it's possible to go wrong there.

For Isis, the goto is probably Oceanic, though I'm also partial to Wavering Radiant.

Mamiffer is also great, but not very metal. It's more of an instrumental post-rock-ish thing. I'd recommended Mare Decendrii as a starter.

If you're into avant-garde stuff, his collaboration with Tashi Dorji is petty good. That's absolutely not metal at all.

To be fair, they also like screaming "Slayer" at all hours of the day
