I don't know much about metal, nor am I familiar with the perceptions and attitudes fans have of the genre. Lately I've been trying to figure out the various sub-genres. I think I'm starting to "get" some of the major ones - that is to say, I can recognize a particular song snippet as falling into its respective category. But I have some questions.

At what level (for lack of a better term) should the genre typically be applied? Meaning, is it the band, the album, or the song that should be prescribed a genre? If a band releases three albums in their career and the first one is death, the second is doom, and the third is black, can the band as a whole be labeled a particular genre? What if one particular album of a particular band shows various styles track to track?

What I'm really getting at is, what are the thoughts from "true metal fans" on bands that cross genres lines? Either album to album, song to song, or even within a given song? Say you're a die hard black metal fan, and the newest album by your favorite band sounds more like death metal than black metal, do you lose respect for that band? Is the "purity" of a band's style typically important to its fans? On the other hand, wouldn't ten albums by a band who doesn't budge an inch in style start to sound mighty repetitive?

Interested to hear thoughts on this.
Basically, if Kerrang! tells me it's good, I'm a fan.

Not exactly. Yes I am getting older, but I listen to new things all the time. It's more about the fact that they are a)terrible and b)show no respect towards the genre that they are attempting to utilize in order to make said lovely music.

Wikipedia posted:

With the recording of the band's new album, which was revealed to be titled Ruining It for Everyone, guitarist Steven Bradley has stated that the group's new album will embrace black metal, along with the band incorporating the use of corpse paint. He expressed that the entire band agreed that they do not want to be pigeonholed as a band that is suffixed as "core" any longer and the new record will be "90% black metal". Bradley went on to say “We were sick of getting lumped in with ‘scene’ and ‘whatever-core’ bands, so we decided to embrace our roots and just go straight black metal on the new album. We had to change our image to match ...because of course that's just as important, if not more so, than the music.” The black metal musical shift was later confirmed to be a large practical joke orchestrated by the band and the heavy metal website MetalSucks. The band's upcoming album, Ruining It for Everybody had a song from the album premiered on the website with the staff confirming that it was all a prank and that the upcoming album "features no actual black metal". The group primarily executed the joke to reveal and parody the over-serious attitude in black metal fans.

The smug "oh ho ho" attitude of this just pisses me off. I realize it's hilarious to get mad about someone making fun of music you like, but metal's been good to me for 27-ish years at this point, so yeah - my panties get in a twist.

Well thread, this discussion came about at the right time. Sitting in one of my lectures the other day, an Amon Amarth riff popped into my head despite not having listened to them for ages, and I decided I wanted to try listening to some melodeath again to see whether I still enjoy it. I think I'll always enjoy Slaughter of the Soul and Heartwork, but the genre definitely seems to be a mixed bag for the most part (although I guess this is true of all genres if you don't know what you're looking for). I was really disappointed with Surtur Rising, and stopped listening to Amon Amarth shortly after, but I kind of hope the new album is good, if only because they were such an important gateway band for me.

Check out Dawn's Slaughtersun (Crown Of The Triarchy) if you missed it. Melodic black/death metal album par excellence.

Anyone heard anything about the Opeth tour, as to what they'll be playing? I'm thinking of driving to the Norfolk show, but I'll be damned if I'm driving 3 hours for a bunch of weepy ballads.

This was the setlist in Nov. of last year according to the internet.

The Devil's Orchard
Ghost of Perdition
White Cluster
Hope Leaves
Deliverance
Hessian Peel
Häxprocess
Reverie/Harlequin Forest
Encore: Blackwater Park

2 songs that I'd even be interested in hearing live. I know I'm in the minority here, but drat, I really don't like post-Still Life Opeth at all. I saw them on the Blackwater Park tour (with Nevermore and Yakuza ) and they kicked all kinds of rear end.

Regarding that show, while Yakuza was playing the crowd started chanting "Opeth" over and over obviously butt-frustrating the band. The guitarist tripped over his cord, and they ended their set telling Atlanta to gently caress off. Opeth played, slayed, then Nevermore came on and the place cleared. I felt really bad for Nevermore so I stayed and listened to their set. They are really good at playing very uninteresting music.

e: I think Lacuna Coil was on that tour as well, but that might have been Still Life. Anyone remember? All I remember is the Cristina from LC being ridiculously attractive. :swoon:
