Can anyone recommend any songs that use bells prominently? I've been listening to maudlin of the Well's 'Bizarre Flowers/A Violent Mist' a lot lately, and the bells in the first half are kinda beautiful. It doesn't have to necessarily be structured like that song, with the bells in a softer section of the song, just metal with some sweet bells.

I'm sure the band has been posted before in the thread and plenty of you know about them, but I dig Botanist. They're a bit less traditional black metal, if only in instrumentation and not so much structurally. They (or should I say he, as it's a one-man project) use a dulcimer and drums as the main instruments. The dulcimer, with its shrieky pitch can really dig at you sometimes, then get all melodic when it needs to. There's a really interesting, unsettling atmosphere created in the music. I think my favorite album is IV, but they're all pretty good. http://verdant-realm-botanist.bandcamp.com/

Anybody got any black metal that has the same kind of screeching vocals that Peste Noire has without the band being a bunch of nationalist dicks?

Thanks to all the crusty seaman in here for the sea metal suggestions so far. Some of them I should have remembered on my own, but there were plenty of new ones for me. Between the Buried and Me posted a clip of Extremophile Elite from their upcoming live Bluray. I like Paul Waggoner's cool 70s rock dad/Derek Smalls look. Also, be on the lookout for tuba man about halfway through. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxGC5WpUbHQ

More thanks for the sea metal. It's going to take awhile to wade through all the stuff I haven't heard before.Fenrir posted:Also, check this poo poo out: BTBAM shows you how to play an awesome song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQZmTXCSO00 I love stuff like this because I like watching people that are good with their instruments (insert dick joke) play. The Colors DVD is awesome because of all the closeups of pick sweeps and poo poo like that they show (and also because Colors is still one of my favorite albums). I don't know if this got posted and I missed it. It's a week old at this point, and I looked back that far, but I might have overlooked it. Anyway, this new Horrendous track is pretty dang good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Cn9xLUOjk

Vincent posted:I don't know if I should ask this in the recomendation thread or this one, but can you guys/gals give me some good female-fronted metal bands to listen to? I'm looking for more modern bands, since this site covers a lot of older stuff (and is more slanted towards heavy metal). Black, Thrash, whatevs, I'm game. SubRosa's a sludgy group that's got a female vocalist/guitarist, as well as two more women violinists/vocalists. No Help for the Mighty Ones is the first album of theirs I heard and probably still my favorite. http://subrosausa.bandcamp.com/album/no-help-for-the-mighty-ones Myrkur, a one-woman Danish black metal band. http://myrkur.bandcamp.com/ Epistasis has a female vocalist, though it might be a little hard to tell at first. She also plays guitar and trumpet. http://crucialblast.bandcamp.com/album/light-through-dead-glass

Going back a bit to women-fronted bands, saw this on Metal Sucks (this is the link I found there, I did not seek out the "audiophile version" thank you very much). http://ennoeadoom.bandcamp.com/album/proarkhe-audiophile-version Pretty cool stuff. This is another one-woman band like Myrkur, though it's a ways off from that project in terms of Myrkur's atmospheric black metal, versus Ennoea's doom. This is by the same woman that's in Fight the Demiurge and a bunch of other stuff.

COOL CORN posted:Fuuuuck I would love to see them. I think their newest was in my top 3 of 2014. Ecdysis is a great album. I made the trip special to see them. They played at The Acheron if you're familiar with it. Fairly small space attached to a bar. Place was packed. I liked two of the other three bands, too, but Horrendous killed it. They don't actually use a bass live, since there's only the three of them and they need both guitars. While bass certainly would have filled out the sound more, I wouldn't really say I was missing it while they played. They're all pretty cool guys, too, which is always great. They said they'd be coming back to NY at some point later this year, but they aren't exactly sure when yet. Edit: They also closed their set with Titan, which is like the slow jam on that album and it kicked rear end. Detective Thompson fucked around with this message at 08:31 on Feb 2, 2015 |

The show in NYC was pretty great, aside from what seemed like volume issues with the levels at a few points during the night. Witch Mountain was alright, the first song was kinda boring, but the others were better. Ecstatic Vision was cool, wish they actually had some stuff up on their Bandcamp aside from that clip. Enslaved was fun, but I think Yob was the highlight for me. I felt kinda wiped out after they left the stage. Marrow was great to see live. Also, at the end of the night, they passed out extras of the show's poster, and I nabbed one. Pretty cool.

Does Satan really need a pentagram on his trident? Yeah, we get it, you're Satan, you're evil. I mean, he's stabbing a flayed Jesus in the back and all. The pentagram is really just extraneous information.

caiman posted:Yeah, I may be sticking to the digital download on this one. What's it giving you for shipping options? When I preordered it way back when it was about ten for shipping, and the whole thing was about $24 total, which I didn't think was too bad. Then I ordered The Exploding Eyes Orchestra from Svart a few weeks ago and the Fedex (or DHL, I forget which) shipping was like $18 and the regular mail option was only slightly cheaper. Not sure what was up with that, but I guess I got a deal with the Cult of Endtime album.

Neurosis was great last night, the finale was awesome. Scott Kelly kinda seemed like he needed a hand off the stage, but the dudes are almost 50 and still killing it, so I'm not surprised if it takes it out of them. The Body was cool, kind of a bunch of apocalyptic noise and fuzz. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth were alright, started off sorta boring, the last few songs were pretty good, though. Sumac was pretty great.
