My dad played nothing but blues and the Nuge when I was growing up, so it's no surprise that I'm into metal. I think I listened to thrash metal exclusively in middle school and prog metal in high school.

I've been going through some of the older albums in my collection and I happened to give Origin by Borknagar another spin. Though not strictly a "metal" release, it's a pretty amazing showcase of the versatility of the band. Here's a pretty cool reworking of Oceans Rise from their 1998 album, The Archaic Course:

Just got back from a show at a small venue in my hometown, and a couple acts played that I thought were worthy of the thread:

First up is "Dethlehem", who call themselves an "RPG Nerd Metal" band. Oh yeah, it's corny as hell. But they were fun to watch on stage - doing things like handing out inflatable swords for a "LARP Pit" and telling really bad Dungeons and Dragons jokes - and were pretty cool guys to chill with when they weren't performing. If you like dorky fantasy metal they're worth a listen at least:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3C0LL2fBQc

Even better was "Of Conscience", a group comprised of some friends of mine from high school. They've got kind of a prog/death thing going on, and I'd say they're worth checking out if you're into, say, early Opeth. All around swell guys who play some pretty swell tunes. They were proud to have CDs of their first demo available at the show for free!

The bass player really impressed me in this video. I'm going to have to check out this Dethlehem band. Somehow their lyrics are less cheesy than DragonForce.

I recently got Pleasure to Kill by Kreator because I've heard that it was one of the foundational albums for death metal, but I just cannot find myself able to like the drumming. I mean the riffs are pretty killer but I mean drat the hi hat work is so loving off time on the blast beats (were there even blast beats back in the mid 80s?).

Is there any other album I should check out other than Pleasure to Kill that would give me a better taste of the group as a whole?

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I think that Ghost Reveries was Opeth's best album (even over Blackwater Park). I felt like it was the perfect fusion of Mikael's death metal and prog rock tendencies and it also had the best production values of any album, especially in the drum department.

I wish they would do another death metal album, but if they're not writing the songs to be in a death metal vein, then I'd rather they stick with prog rock instead of trying to write something forced. I don't think that Opeth is a spent entity or anything, but we're starting to feel the impact of losing Lopez and Lindgren. Mikael may have been the principal songwriter, but Martin and Peter definitely left their marks on the albums that they were on.

All this Opeth talk raises a question: are there any bands who got noticeably heavier or more aggressive over the course of their careers? The only other band I can think of is Pantera.

I dunno. Iced Earth is such a weird band because they have an awful lot of good material spanning their 25 years or whatever, but since Stormrider they can't seem to figure out how to release an album with more than three or four songs that anybody would deliberately listen to. For every "The Coming Curse" or "Dracula" you get three "Consequences" and "Ghost of Freedom."

Honestly Burnt Offerings was the last album from Iced Earth that was solid all the way through. It doesn't help that the band can't keep a stable lineup for more than one album.
