It's odd that the 10 minute songs go by extremely fast and the 5 minute ones go on forever.

I'm not sure I'd call this primarily "folk", but I still like it due to the melodic elements in it. Or maybe I am just not understanding the elements of of NA folk music again.

Just be sure to listen to Helloween when you take costume advice of some 16-18 year old South American metalheads that have posted pictures on Last.fm of theirselves through a mirror with powder and water drops on it while they show off their favorite style of horrible "corpse paint" makeup found from their (or their sister's) makeup out of their (or their sister's) dressing table.

Edit: Honestly I doubt anyone, especially trick-or-treaters, would know who Ghaal is, but they'd be afraid nontheless. The shirt would be easy. At least in Scandinavia, most metalheads wear sleeveless black shirts, especially when your arms won't turn red or blue (i.e. winter). The trousers you might need help with. Maybe go to a leather store or maybe a sex/adult shop and see what kind of pants they have...laced leather/jeans isn't as easy to find.

Boots and belt you'd probably find at hot topic or something, I don't really know what they sell there but for some reason that store comes to mind.

I'm making a template for the OP to use for newbies that come in here and are like "Alright, so I never listened to any metal before, but you'll never believe what I just saw on YouTube -- Metallica. So what should I listen to next?" type people. Help me out by making suggestions (such as if we should remove the "Regions Associated:" line), filling in the blanks, and offering better music videos because I'm really only an expert on Folk Metal, Power Metal, and arguably Black Metal but that's scratchy at best.

Feel free to replace videos with your own suggestion, but don't turn this into a war. I really suggest you replace videos with things that will be most accessible to the genre (this is highly subjective, but for example, I'm personally not sure that Lumsk is a good "entry" level Folk Metal band), that demonstrate the essence of the genre (i.e. Wolves in the Throne Room, although Black Metal, doesn't really fit as the flagship of Black Metal), and aren't used twice. Try to get the most popular bands, but mix it up as well: have a really "popular" band such as Dimmu Borgir and an unknown one thrown in somewhere.

Feel free to add genres. Oh and again, help me fill in the blanks, I know next to nothing about Thrash and the others that are blank.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually, go here. This link contains the post we're working on. I got tired of trying to find the edit button with a page full of videos, so I made it on a new page.

For some one just getting into death metal with no real prior background I'd recommend Amon Amarth. They may not be the most innovative or whatever band but they had/have two things that helped ease me into that kind of metal. First their heavy incorporation of melody work gave my ear something to familiar to work with as I developed an appreciation for the styling of the genre. The second is far more subjective but I've found Hegg's vocals to be easily enough understandable. This made a huge difference for me when growls were new and scary and different.

A few of their exemplar songs:
Fate of Norms - The Pursuit of Vikings
With Oden On Our Side - Runes to my Memory
Versus the World - Death in Fire

Though if you were to only listen to one of those I'd pick Runes to my Memory.

You guys know what'll be cool? If we make 800x50 sized banners for each genre of music. Like for a Black Metal banner, we can make the banner all black and use the writing most black metal bands use for it.

Like take this:

Make it say:

Black Metal

And make it this size:

Then for Power Metal, we can do a collage of some front-men from various bands (Blind Guardian we can use Hansi, Helloween we use Andi) on the same banner with the title "Power Metal".

And so forth.

I don't understand your question. Yes, there seems to be a lot of people doing what I want them to do -- suggesting the best videos to put up for each genre. And I am putting them up there!

Right now I am limiting the videos in that post to just 4 per genre, but if people think that's too few for metal newbies to "get a feel for the genre", then we can increase it. The problem with more videos for each genre is cluttering, where the post gets too hard to read because of too many embedded YouTube videos.

I personally don't consider Iced Earth as Power Metal, at least not much, but someone earlier wanted to add them up there.

Also, goon recommendations don't have a limit. Only videos (four per genre due to loading times and cluttering).

We can make each band in the Goon Recommnedations clickable, but where do you guys want them to go to? Last.fm? Wikipedia? Band's website? Spotify sample song? YouTube sample song?
