I don't get it. I agree it sounds like an Alice in Chains record (even though I like Black Give Way to Blue better). What's with this "grower" business? If I don't like an album to begin with, it's usually just because I didn't think it wasn't very good to begin with. The album is a mediocre rock album. This whole "give it a chance because it's Mastodon" crap is pretty lame.

Finally had some time to listen to some new albums this morning.

Opeth's Heritage was very boring. I even love all that off tempo prog stuff but this just didn't do it for me. I felt there were times when they could've (should've) gone heavy and held off just to be different from their norm. I think even non metal prog acts would've gone heavier.

New Skeletonwitch was loving great, some good old thrash with some more melodic elements. I guess Mastodon's The Hunter actually is growing on me (contrary to my previous post). I think my new favorite rotation album is Hunters From Birth to Soil. http://www.frombirthtosoil.com/ This poo poo slays. They're streaming their whole album on their website. Check the tracks Grime Maiden and World Lament (although the whole albums is great.

They also have done some of my favorite cover songs.

Every single Metal scene ever has been largely fueled by competition. That's how the Slayers, Morbid Angels, Darkthrones, etc all became the trend setters in their eras and genres. They rose above their peers by making better music and being chosen by their scenes and the traders. That's why Slayer became the legends and Attitude Adjustment didn't. It's only natural to measure yourself up against others and try to exceed them, especially in a group setting filled with teenaged and young adult males.

By "the Darkthrones" I'm assuming you're referring to the early norwegian black metal scene including Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, etc. I'll agree that there was competition but it was hardly about making better music and was really so much about fighting the mainstream and trendsetters that, ironically, they became the trendsetters.

"Djent" is a fictional sub-genre that somehow co-opted a lot of technical/progressive metal bands, but most of the bands who claim to be "djent" don't know how to write interesting song structures and just weedily-weedily-blooop their way through an album and that's about it.

I don't give a poo poo if it sounds like a guitar note, it is still dumb as hell.

Hey everybody let's just rename each genre of music according to the onomatopoeia's of the type of sound they make. Personally, I think weedily-weedily-blooop would be a better term for that type of music.

Your second argument is not convincing.

I mean, I guess I can tolerate Arjen when he's making his Dutch drug-addled prog-pop-rock but whenever he attempts to create metal it's just so unbelievably cheesy and stupid. What I'm trying to say is that My House on Mars is a song that I would willingly listen to but anything off Migrator II is awful awful awful tripe. 10100100101010111 or whatever that album was was such a crock of over-built bombast that I couldn't bring myself to like it. I mean, I love Bal-Sagoth for chrissakes, I'm a fan of the bombastic. That one was just... cotton candy on a deep fried mars bar covered in cheese and whipped cream.

Hahahaha yeah, that's true. But he does create some pretty good poo poo. On the musician level I think he's supurb, despite the lyrics. Maybe 1010001010110 isn't really "metal" and delves more into simply prog or even just experimental, but it's actually pretty good as a concept album.
