Shimrra Jamaane posted:So, a sample of Metallica and Lou Reed's collaboration has been released. I can't get over how awful this is. What audience would want to listen to this? I'm all for musical experimentation but after the awfulness of S&M it's obvious they don't know how to mix musical styles together. Then again, if I was in their position with my own studio and fuckoff money, I'd record all kinds of wacky poo poo, just because I could. That's the only explanation I have.

Ditto on that, I'm really digging them. Listened to that track, and now to "Awful Fall" and I'm sold.

captainOrbital posted:So like what's the problem that everyone has with Lars (aside from being a Danish twat)? I was listening to HoS and Call of Ktulu (and some other stuff that came up on shuffle) and his drumming sounds OK to me. What is it that I'm missing? His style is the par for the course for mid-80's thrash, and he never improved or even tried to do anything different since then. Metal drumming has become incredibly demanding and intense over the course of the last two decades and he does neither. Take an album of theirs and think about what it might sound like with a modern drummer who tries. Even if it's unfair to use one of their early albums, use a recent one like Death Magnetic.

Meshuggah tunes sound like the basic framework of a song that never gets finished. It doesn't help that they take two riffs and ride them for soooooo long.

That's not entirely true, but what does hurt is the lack of venues. There are sparse few left that have metal shows at all.

The new Faceless sure is... something. They seem to have become Opeth. While I do appreciate trying something bold and different, I don't think it altogether works. A lot of the tunes lack balls, and a couple of the tunes (for example, the opening track) would sound right at home on rock radio. I know a lot of people who would like it, but I find it meh.

I don't see where he says that, but it wouldn't surprise me, I was at the show last night in Boston and they had a bit of a kerfuffle at loadout. A punch may or may not have been thrown. It's amusing seeing the vocal quality in two band's sets go from amazing to... the opposite of amazing.

QPZIL posted:Are you saying CD's vocals have gone to the opposite of amazing? Their new album's vocals are pretty radical, are they not as good live now? :\ Noo! Just the opposite. I meant that CD's vocals are amazing. They played first. Then SFU came on, atrocious vocals, place clears out. I would say about 50-60% of the people left when SFU came on.

I know of one that does exist, (Fredrik's) Special Defects. Still a lot of Meshuggah in it, but with a lot of jazzy elements thrown in. Still has a lot of the problems Meshuggah does but it's a little easier to digest plus I like the vocals a lot better, being all gremlin-style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6kXLkJA6g0

Exactly... we all have different tastes. I love tech death, but lots of people complain about it being soulless and I can see where they're coming from- so although I love it, it doesn't make anyone a turd if they don't.

I think guitar and bass tones really rely on what kind of genre/sound you're looking for. A super crunch or super fuzz guitar will sound awesome in some styles but stink in others. A twangy bass sound works for some styles where a deep tone works for others. Mileage may vary.
