It's a really thin line to be fair.

Did anyone like BTBAM's latest? I don't mind the lack of heaviness at all but it just seemed kind of boring and poorly written.

P2 is my favourite, but I like them all since Alaska except coma eclipse which I've listened through 6 times without anything sticking. Good to see other people like it though, hopefully I'll like the next one more.

Since no else responded - yeah it's amazing, very much in the same vein as the last couple but with more of the catchiness and crunchiness of their second self titled.

From Petrucci's AMA:

"On the album the story is focused more on the human characters and their struggles, however the NOMAC story will be explored further in future novelization."

Who's excited for a Dream Theater novel?!

I thought Vertikal was great, in part because it was doing something different from straight up Isis worship, but then nothing between that and Salvation really grabbed me because it sounded too much like a not as good Isis to me.

Excited for the new album anyway

Edit: I also always had an inexplicable fondness for Sleep off their first album, it could use editing down but the climax gets me every time.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Dead Congregation, their latest album is incredible. It's also probably the heaviest album I've enjoyed this much (barring different types of heaviness like doom or whatever). Any recommendations for similar stuff?

Then again, I don't think any band would be like "we've just released our best album that we're going to make, we should get out while we're on top". Gotta ride that wave as long as it lasts.

Whether Isis' last album was their best is debatable (I prefer Panopticon) but they quit while they were still making amazing music, specifically because they'd agreed when they formed the band to split before they ran out of ideas.

Speaking of bands that should have quit, I just listened to Cryptopsy's None So Vile for the first time and it blew me away, but I hear their later stuff sucked?

Once I've started to digest None So Vile I'll give their live album and Whispers a try at least.

Anyone have a recommendation for Prog DM? Looking for something similar to Opeth and Anciients. I tried Edge of Sanity's Crimson album and it didn't do anything for me. Katatonia's The Fall of Hearts seemed decent.

As well as Haken, Ne Obliviscaris and Ihsahn's latest might be worth a try.

Edit: if you haven't tried Between the Buried and Me or maudlin of the Well they're a bit proggier but good too.

I'd have said that until Kodama came out, now it's still the best but only by a little.

I just got round to checking out various best of 2016 lists and I don't think I've seen Inquisition's Bloodshed... on any of them, which proves they're all trash because that was my #1 metal album last year. I barely saw my #2, Wormrot's Voices, either. I guess I could be the one with bad taste but that seems wrong.

Edit: They did introduce me to a few things I hadn't heard though, like Zhrine's Unortheta which sounds great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1AKVqQ0dvg

Nazi's have the right to make music, labels have the right to publish it or not, people have the right to not give money to labels that give money to nazis. Seems fine to me. Though the amount of racism in metal does make me want to vomit as well, sometimes.

Is Arch Enemy actually some kind of ongoing experiment to make the most boring metal possible? In a way they were a stepping stone for me to get into heavier metal, Burning Angel was on a free CD I got and it was the first song I liked with no clean vocals, but even with that in their favour I just can't enjoy anything else they've done.

I like plenty of successful/popular stuff, Arch Enemy are just very boring in my opinion. A lot of this thread's posters' tastes do run towards the more extreme end of metal, which is obviously going to be less mainstream, but there are plenty of fans of more popular bands - Mastadon, Devin Townsend and Deathklok all have their fans in here for example. Not to mention successful classic bands - sure, people might hate Metallica now but Death, Napalm Death and Darkthrone for example are all held in high regard, and they are hardly "extremely unkown". Hating things just because they are successful is stupid but so is assuming that people are only pretending not to like them.

Agreed, they're not a band I listen to for the same reasons as most metal, but their live stuff is really good and fun when I want something upbeat. Their belief in metal as a unifying force and willingness to experiment makes them far more worthy of respect than any NSBM band too.

Are there any good left wing or anti-nazi metal bands apart from Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower?

I love bass when it's well used in metal, especially if it's a little melodic. Here's a few I really like:

Isis have some great bass, check out 4:46 in In Fiction
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sopiG1Qhlh8

or 3:52 in Backlit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDi5L56cx9Y

Ne Obliviscaris have their bass mixed a little low considering how good it is, like at 2:55 in Xenoflux
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wa4zqBwPVE

Cryptopsy obviously have insane bass, see the entirety of None so Vile
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3JeaBoBU-c

Aosoth is a little simpler but the bass sound in Arrow In Heart is great, and there's cool moments like from 5:10 in the title track
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDi5L56cx9Y

and Opeth might get a mixed reaction, but the bass plays a huge part in making The Drapery Falls great
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wa4zqBwPVE

That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm missing some great stuff.

Edit: Wait, can't talk about bass without mentioning Bolt Thrower
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv9OeZmFuZw

and their spiritual successors Korn

I'd like to make it clear to the serious metal fans that I haven't intentionally listened to Korn in over a decade. I didn't even listen to the link I posted! I also wasn't that into them even when I was a nu metal liking teenager, I thought their albums were really inconsistent.

Seriously though I don't care if people still like Korn but I was hoping for someone to post more metal with good bass in the style of the other bands.
