I've been on a prog rock kick the last few month, have there been any decent metal releases in the last few weeks? And what did people think of the latest Deceased album? Last new metal albums I bought were the latest Argus and Necros Christos if that helps influence suggestions.

New Deceased is great. Pretty much the flipside of As the Weird Travel On... in that it's death/thrash with heavy metal influences, and it's still got that oldschool heavy metal guitar tone going through all the riffs.

And well it's hardly the "last few weeks", but I recommend Venenum (everyone from Excoriate except the singer), Stench of Decay, Corpsessed, Vanhelgd, Morbus Chron, Gorephilia, Bone Sickness, Disma, Desolate Shrine.

That should cover you for death metal, aside from the obvious stuff like Autopsy and of course, if you dig NC, you've got to check Sonne Adam.

Fans of power metal should Probably check out the new Satan's Host.

Morbus Chron and the Vanhelgd were both releases I meant to pick up and forgot, thanks for the mention! New Satan's Host sounded cool, shame Jag Panzer are no more though.

That new Autopsy was pretty drat solid, a slow burner though as the first few tracks weren't that interesting until a few listens.

The description of the new Deceased is boner inducing!

Not sure if anyone cares, but the new Anubis Gate is also out soon.

Oh and if anyone wants an album that's modern, but very much heavy/speed/power metal then look no further than the new Portrait.

Most people will batter on about the King Diamond/Mercyful Fate influences, but this new album really smacks more of Iron Maiden and NWOBHM in general as well as 80s power/speed to me.

Played it on the train today after having a few months between listens, enjoyed it way more than I initially did. Still better than the first IMO. Vocalist was trying to be KD way too hard.

Just had another listen to the 2007 Moonspell release where they redid their old EPs. Man, that is some really good material. If you're not sure what it sounds like, it has a similar vibe to early-mid Samael, Triarchy-current era Rotting Christ, and of course their own Lusitanian thing.

MrBling, is that Morbus Chron album you mentioned any good?

het, the logo looks so damned familiar, but as mentioned it may just be a generic logo, but it's doubtful as the rest of the logos are directly influenced by bands.

I'm a huge Metallica apologist, but this album was a terrible idea.

To be fair, it really isn't Metallica's fault though. Their music has some pretty awesome backing riffs in there that I wish had been saved for an actual album. The problems with "Lulu" are 90% because Lou Reed entered the Bob Dylan "Why is he still trying to do vocals?" territory. Seems like Hetfield and Co. jumped at the idea of working with him for personal reasons before realizing it sounded better in theory than it actually turned out.

Strangely, the stuff that actually works is the weird ambient stuff like the first half of "Cheat on Me" and most of "Junior Dad." It's different from anything Metallica has ever done, but if the whole album had been done with that style, they may have actually pulled it off since it couples with Lou's vocals a Hell of a lot better than... whatever the majority of the album was trying.

e: In fact, listening to the album a little more (trying anyway), "Junior Dad" pisses me off because it makes me think of what kind of cool, chill-out, relaxing album they could have made instead. If they had made a whole album of stuff like that, it could have had so much potential!

Pumping Blood had some really cool parts, such a waste!

Today I am going to talk to you about a band from Australia.

Innsmouth
If you can't guess what the inspiration for this band is, I am shocked that you haven't been introduced to Lovecraft via your love of metal. These guys dig Lovecraft.

They have a demo (The Departure of Shub Niggurath) and 7" (She-Goat) and they're both great. Musically, they can be described as atmospheric doomed-up death metal with the Australian flavour of Armoured Angel and Cauldron Black Ram. When they played a show here in Melbourne it was one of the best I'd ever been to, they nearly caved the floor in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-vsEHy8jio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvjqxrZM64A

And now to go across the Pacific and towards California, to where Witchaven are located.

When I'm in the mood for some well played blackened thrash metal, this inevitably finds its way into my playlist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux5fQqA76gM Reminds me of watching Headbangers Ball a long time ago.

I rewind the song just for the toms. Something about the drum sound on this album really works.

The album is really good.

I prefer older death metal stylings (Autopsy, Death, Swedish DM), because that's what I got into growing up, or appeals more due to the rawness and no-frills attitude.

It could be a case of "get off my lawn" because it seems "younger" people tend to enjoy tech death more from personal experience. Tech death usually equates to that plastic sounding perfect engineering job which I can't stand most of the time. No person in their right mind would or can deny the musicianship of bands like Obscura, but it gets in the way of a good tune.

Don't get me wrong, there are times where I want to hear musicians wank about, but prefer to listen to progressive rock or metal for that, or Atheist.
