Y'all should listen to Ancients from Vancouver. It's unusual for a fast metal band to hold my attention, but I like the way they combine melody and swing with precision without sounding lame. They're absolutely one of the best live bands in the city right now, and I've seen them unleash a couple of 9-10 minute monsters at some recent shows.

I'd love to see them live, but I don't live anywhere near Vancouver right now. Kenny and Chris are always telling me about "crushing" new riffs they're working on (their favourite word), and I believe they're supposed to be recording a full length album in January. If it's anything like what they've been doing live, expect great things.

Too much compression, however, can remove the dynamics between volume levels that you want, leaving a track sounding "squashed."

A new Anciients track is streaming on Pitchfork. It happens to be one of my favorite tunes on their upcoming album, so dig it! Lengthy, proggy, plenty of twists and turns- good stuff. The 2xLP is available for preorder from Season of Mist as well.

I like one Meshuggah song, and that's "Combustion" off of Obzen. I don't know why they persist in churning out the same chugga-chugga stuff when they're capable of writing a total ripper like that track.

The whole ANCIIENTS album is streaming on the Season of Mist bandcamp: http://seasonofmistcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/heart-of-oak I've witnessed the development in their sound and their live show over the last couple years, and they are the real deal. In fact, I'd say they're the best metal band, and probably the best band in Vancouver, period. I really hope they do well on the Death To All tour, and I hope some of you have the chance to catch them live.
