Oh, David...
Y'all should listen to Ancients from Vancouver. It's unusual for a fast metal band to hold my attention, but I like the way they combine melody and swing with precision without sounding lame. They're absolutely one of the best live bands in the city right now, and I've seen them unleash a couple of 9-10 minute monsters at some recent shows.

I've been rocking their EP a lot over the last few days. Can't wait to hear where they go from here because there's a whole lot of potential in those 14 minutes. I'd love to see them live, but I don't live anywhere near Vancouver right now.

Kenny and Chris are always telling me about "crushing" new riffs they're working on (their favourite word), and I believe they're supposed to be recording a full length album in January. If it's anything like what they've been doing live, expect great things.

What does it mean when a drummer's sound is referred to as "compressed?"

I've seen this mentioned a few times in the last few pages here and don't understand the reference. Is it a dry sound without reverb or something? Maybe a youtube example would illustrate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression

Compression is an essential part of music production, as it serves to "even out" the volume of a track by increasing the volume of quiet parts and limiting the volume of loud parts (well, actually "limiting" is another, related concept, but let's not worry about that). Too much compression, however, can remove the dynamics between volume levels that you want, leaving a track sounding "squashed."

This is a really excellent compilation of heavy music from a good Vancouver label: http://apocalypsesunrise.bandcamp.com/album/apocalypse-sunrise-records-2012-compilation

A lot of it is not to my taste, but there's so much diversity I figured you all would appreciate it.

A new Anciients track is streaming on Pitchfork. It happens to be one of my favorite tunes on their upcoming album, so dig it! Lengthy, proggy, plenty of twists and turns- good stuff. The 2xLP is available for preorder from Season of Mist as well.

I like one Meshuggah song, and that's "Combustion" off of Obzen. I don't know why they persist in churning out the same chugga-chugga stuff when they're capable of writing a total ripper like that track.

Johnny and Mapee used to play in the legendary Vancouver crossover thrash/skate punk band S.T.R.E.E.T.S. (Skateboarding Totally Rules, Everything Else Totally Sucks), which also featured James Farwell, now of Bison BC. Their music is a lot of fun:

The whole ANCIIENTS album is streaming on the Season of Mist bandcamp: http://seasonofmistcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/heart-of-oak

I've witnessed the development in their sound and their live show over the last couple years, and they are the real deal. In fact, I'd say they're the best metal band, and probably the best band in Vancouver, period. I really hope they do well on the Death To All tour, and I hope some of you have the chance to catch them live.

Excellent live band. I saw them as the headliner of a big show in Vancouver in April, and they sounded and played great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGkDuNp6lEU

Aggression also reunited for that show. Their album is pretty rough, but the songs sounded awesome live, and it looked like they were having a lot of fun playing together again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKZEBodowkU

Lars is such a poo poo drummer who loving lucked out and won the band lottery. Slow as gently caress... beats the poo poo out of his drums like each hit is a swing of the mallet on a strong man carnival challenge. Plays poo poo that absolutely doesn't fit the cadence of the song -- and not in a good or interesting way. Listen to the end of "Enter Sandman" for a perfect example -- no "touch," just smashing away with bass/crash staccatos that don't match the guitars or bass... just loving random.

On top of it he sure seems like the douchiest dude.

I read Scott Ian's book, and according to him, James and Kirk were planning to kick Lars out, but couldn't go through with it after Cliff was killed.

My dudes in Hashteroid made the extremely poor decision to release their album on 4/20 and got immediately buried by Sleep. They're not even a stoner doom band, so I dunno what they were thinking, but the album is really good nonetheless!
