Sorry for the absence. I moved, didn't have internet for a while, etc. Anyway; since Iced Earth will play here in November, I saw the link to their "When the Eagle Cries" video. I didn't know the song had a video and now I wish I hadn't found out. It's so lovely and corny that it looks like a parody of itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o6xrSyhVhc This other version is betters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a7bX7GB9z4&feature=watch_response Starting at 0:45. I'm currently reviewing the upcoming Van Canto album. Some highlights: There's a cover of Sabaton's "Primo Victoria". Considering that the song is rather recent, and that it's sung by Sabaton's own singer, it seems unnecessary, especially because there aren't any important changes (with the exception of the dumm dummm dumm dumm daaam in the background). There's an amazing cover of Manowar's "Master of the Wind". The rest is, well, Van Canto.

In other news, my "magazine" is getting big-ish. I have deals with Napalm Records and Century Media, so I get to listen to their albums before they're released; the same things with other minor labels as well as emerging bands that send me their demos. However, I also have a full-time job (I'm doing my PhD) so I can't really review everything they send me. If anybody wants to help me review albums and/or concerts, please let me know. You'll get the chance to listen to music before everyone else!

A friend of mine recently showed them to me, and they sound like nothing I've heard before and I've to find more like it since they only have two albums The weirdness of DSO is hard to replicate. I've seen a couple of bands that come close. Some songs by Iwrestledabearonce do have a similar avant-garde theme, in the sense of making weird changes in rhythm. The singing style, however, is of a more "death metal style", at least for the most part. A more appropriate recommendation would be UneXpect. They're hard to listen at first, but it's definitely worth the shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piaIjkxNjaY Also, I'll try Stolen Babies, since I had never heard of them.

I'll interview warbringer tomorrow, so if anybody has any questions, let me know. They're opening for Arch Enemy here, but I think I'll leave before AE ends; I saw them in metalcamp earlier this year, and I got fed up with their preachy attitude about "No Gods! I sort of feel bad for the die-hard fans, because the band really departed from what had made them unique (though I obviously am more of a fan of the new album). I'm not sure any other band really is doing this combination of chorus vocals and catchy repetitive riffing sort of crossing power metal with melodeath. I would have expected Turisas to go in this sort of direction before Tyr really. Monkeytime was the one who spurred me to really give this album a chance, and I think he said he'd read an interview where they said they made a deliberate decision to go for a catchier/poppier angle. I'll just go ahead and present my interview of Heri Joensen, where he explains why he did this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RARNgJqorzE Also: Merry Christmas everyone.
