Edge & Christian posted:Speaking of ripoffs, is there any reason behind the proliferation of "Express" tag teams in the 1980s besides "Midnight Express took their name/entrance theme from a heroin smuggling prison drama of the same name"? Did it just become shorthand for "tag team" or something and carny promoters hoping someone might think the US/Can-Am/Orient/PYT/etc. Express were a rebranded Rock N Roll or Midnight Express? Were there a lot more train enthusiasts in the wrestling fanbase back in the day? Angry_Ed posted:While I can't say for certain, I'm going to guess it was a carny thing to either trick people or go "hey remember this thing? Here's something just as good!". You also had stuff like "The Midnight Rockers" (although allegedly that came from the Judas Priest song "Living after Midnight" but come on now). Basically, it's the wrestling thing of "if something is popular, we'll make our own!". There was the Midnight Express, and The Fabulous Ones. So they need another pretty boy team to capitalize on the popularity of the Fabs. Hence The Rock-n-Roll Express. Then they exploded, so everyone wanted the piece of that pie. The Midnight Rockers in the AWA, The Rock-n-Roll RPMs in Continental, The Southern Rockers in Pacific Northwest. Eddie Gilbert and Tommy Rich were briefly "Fargo's Fabulous Ones" in Memphis after the original Fabs left. The Fantastics (originally billed as "The Fantastic Ones") were another follow up to the Fabs. Then brother teams like The Batten Twins (who rocked a Fabulous Ones gimmick in WWC), or Steve and Shaun Simpson (with a Rocker style gimmick) in World Class. Once the "pretty boy" team proved boffo at the box office, everyone wanted a piece, and something like "Express" or "Fabulous" was kind of a short hand. Plus, the "Express" name helped convey a style of tag wrestling (a fast paced duo). Just think about how many places wanted their own "monster" team after The Road Warriors changed the sport.

El Gallinero Gros posted:It was basic. But it was executed very well, which is true of a lot of great angles and title chases/runs. It left out the best bit. Lethal was the World TV champ when he won, and in the aftermath, refused to relinquish the TV title, instead declaring that he would defend both, leading to him finding himself having to compete in multiple matches some nights. It made him really look like a champion and a star.

That DICK! posted:my friend told me a story of bully ray being a huge rear end in a top hat to him at a bar before finding out he was an indie wrestler, then he just started offloading a ton of lovely wrestling advice about how to make it. i don't remember much of it except The advice may have been lovely, but that was cool of Bully Ray to at least offer advice when he found out your friend was a wrestler, instead of blowing him off.

That DICK! posted:It was in the context of yelling at him. At an ROH event, last summerish in Vegas, Bully Ray incited the entire audience to boo my friend because he did not stand and cheer at the news that Kenny Omega would be there tomorrow. This was from some PPV or event or something, it was on YouTube. My friend is wearing a rockos modern life shirt Well then, that's lovely.
