I think Marvel is just striking while Conan is hit for them right now. Unless Disney buys Conan outright it's always possible that the rights will shift yet again.

I suspect that there's a ticking clock factor that would explain the pace that Marvel is publishing these. I mean, Conan the Barbarian will be complete with the publication of volume 10, all that's left are King Conan and Savage Sword (which may take a while still since they're only about halfway through that run and those issues are thicker than a typical 22 page comic).

Meanwhile, I think Amazing Spider-Man is in 2nd place with 5 volumes published thus far.

Come on, Marvel, let me get that sweet, sweet Uncanny volume 5.

edit; oops, I guess Savage Sword of Conan is in 2nd place with 6 or 7 or whatever that's on now. It's a good time to be a Marvel era Conan fan, I guess

As a Conan omnibus buyer I stopped when the price crept up and the discount at IST got smaller (ie the Fleisher run). I'll probably keep forking over cash for the Savage omnibii because I'm a sucker but Regular Conan supposedly goes downhill after Roy Thomas leaves somewhere around issue 150. I think there's a blog post by Cristopher Priest where he poo poo talks the era before his run, and since he can be hot or cold I think I jumped off at a decent time.

I will say the first 5 omnis are very good. Consistently great art and the stories are very, I suppose, distilled sword and (Conan hating) sorcery. I'm not sure if there's much else quite like it - it is functionally the standard to which things are applied, but the quality is high enough that it's like... why not just read the thing that sets the standard?

In other giant book news I got Books of Magic Vol 2 and between those and Grell's Green Arrow Omnibii if you drilled a hole in the middle of them you could use them for dumb bells. Like, I really appreciate that DC is collecting all of this in nice looking books but ffs they are immense.

Tales of Wonder and Discount Comic Book Service are the same company as In Stock Trades. Best prices around, good packaging, non-existent customer service, slow shipping, they charge tax. I can tell they actually check their e-mail, but they do not respond. They cherry pick the most urgent customer issues to deal with and pretty much ignore the rest. Within a month, they mis-shipped two or three of my packages, I had to contact the person on the invoice IST to get it resolved. They're the best companies to use, if you do not mind slow shipping, and you don't need to contact customer service.

Organic Priced Books has decent priced books, good customer service, no tax?. They also seem to have a willingness to be active in the community instead of what IST has become, a faceless entity.

Cheap Graphic Novels's website is so terrible I refuse to use them.

Cool to see some Conan talk! This makes me want to check out more of the Marvel stuff. Love the Dark Horse stuff, especially Busiek. I've gotten a couple Savage Sword issues to fill in Howard adaptations Dark Horse didn't get to, but that does sound like fun stuff all around.

Tarantino in one of those podcast interviews mentioned how big a deal that Black Coast arc was at Marvel at the time.

If you liked the Busiek run then you'll probably enjoy the Thomas run. It's obviously more 70's in style/"how comics were" (not sure how to describe this) and a bit more PG but Conan goes all over, and IMO I feel that a lot of modern attempts in various media all try to capture that tone while being more Airbrushed Van Art and less... Prince Valiant, and it mostly doesn't work. The traditional comic style under Buscema and others does a lot to merge a somewhat low-fantasy world with high-fantasy presentation.

But if you have the DH stuff you may have seen some of it? I'm not sure how their license worked with their reprints.

For sure, cool to hear! I've got a lot of Conan on the to-read pile, including all the Truman Dark Horse run, their King Conan stuff etc. For Thomas I have that much later Road of Kings thing they did at Dark Horse.

The classic Thomas run does look like a lot of fun, I've got a few issues of their Savage Sword stuff (their adaptation of Red Nails, People of the Black Circle, and Horror from the Red Tower). Mainly being curious to see some adaptation for each Robert E. Howard story etc. But for sure I can see the appeal of that whole era of Conan, looks like fun.

Any bits or areas from that whole run you liked best? Did you like the main Conan book or Savage Sword better say, and does it start best, get better later, stuff like that? It does look pretty consistent. He also returned for an early 90s Marvel run I haven't heard much about.

How is this run? Bachalo's art in omni format got me to notice but I have next to no clue how the book actually is (other than that the art switches off because he can't keep deadlines).

I only have excellent ideas
In my mind it starts off strong and Bachalo does some wonderful work but it gets bogged down in arcs that start off fun and brisk but just drag on a bit too long, or mired in ideas that are just not very good (eg an early arc that interweaves very fun scenes of Logan and Quentin Quire robbing a space casino with very tedious scenes of Kate Pryde being fake pregnant with a bunch of nano-Broo, or a very meandering arc about an evil circus). But it is usually brisk and has at least one fun little thing going on-- I'd say give it a test drive before committing to the omnibus, but it's very much not BAD even if it wasn't my favorite thing on the stands at the time.

Yeah I love the book admittedly more for the start and some of the long beats and character moments than the overall quality of the book. It has some of my all time favorite X moments but it also has AvX cut right through the middle of it which it never really recovers from before the X line got shuffled yet again.

In my Circle Dashboard page I found a deal you can activate to get a $15 Target reward when you make 3 purchases of $35 or more within the next 18 days. So if you're thinking about picking up nine books that go for $12 a pop or more, you can make three separate orders to get three of them free and then get an additional $15 store credit.

I was using an android library app (MyLibrary?) on my phone, but deleted it all when an update to android required more permissions. Now I'm rescanning everything with a bar code reader app which generates the ISBN and does a tepid google search, and I email that to myself to shovel into excel/convert into cells. My goal is to use the "Web Coding and Development for Dummies" book I checked out from the library to build a web-based database. I could push it all in an Access/SQL database like I do at work but both there and here I am trying to get away from Access for frontend work.

Unfortunately I am a dodo and don't really know how to program so I expect to make zero progress.

I taught myself quite a bit a few years back with Code Academy. It was enough to get a webpage up and functional when combined with some light googling. Not sure how much they have changed, but the format back then was extremely digestible.
