I just got caught up, and would like to say that this LP is pretty awesome.

I'm eagerly awaiting more wild magic insanity. Squirrel armies and zombie sex changes are just the tip of the iceberg of what's possible, especially once higher level spells come into play.

I'm currently 1/3rd of the way through this cheat-tastic replay of the game to catch up to the current area and I should be able to finish it off in about 12 hours and give a real update. There have been a few differences this second playthrough due to additional mods that I managed to install or have been added to the latest BWP so I am cataloging the differences in a kind of alternate-reality flash-sideways a la LOST.

Looking forward to it! Replaying everything, let alone installing BGP twice is true masochism dedication.

Hey guys, I went back and re-visited the problem of video editing and this time I got a lot further. Here is an edited version of the fight where Minsc slaughters the whole party, but this time I took out all the pauses and the audio, and put in a new audio track which is just the fight music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BHRUX3zKM8

Since I can do this now relatively painlessly I'll be recording all the major boss fights like this. I'll play the fights without music, edit out all the pauses, and then overlay the fight music on the video after that. Hopefully it will look better than this one!

With that said I guess I should have recorded the fight with Mulahey. Eh, it wasn't that epic.

You got me to instinctively rage-click on the death screen again. :downs:

Also I recently started replaying the game again, and even on a relatively easier setting (only the sword coast strategies mod and BGT), the bandit camp which you are headed towards is absolutely brutal. 2 hard fights in a row and no chance to rest and recover spells in between.

Perhaps you could show the levels of all the npcs next time we have a vote? That way we can intelligently choose high-levelterrible lovely party members.

For the record, I've already cast my votes, but I think the best party composition (balancing party dynamics and party capability) would be:

Minsk

A Priest (don't particularly care if it's Branwen or Gavin, even Viconia is fine, don't really care for Tiax though)

I don't think going for an optimal party is a very good idea. If anything, it ensures that the more interesting (but low-level) characters become even worse and less likely to be voted for.

I didn't vote for Mur-Neth, but I applaud everybody who did. This game needs more weirdness.

It seems like every one of these romance mods has a cliche'd "one partner has commitment issues, fucks things up for a while", or "all hope is lost" moment. If the trope follows the traditional patterns, this should lead to the "touching reconciliation and even stronger relationship than before" next.

Just like in my favorite romantic comedy!

With Shar-Teel, this happens every day.

Also, wow I had about 300 pages to catch up on and it was awesome. If you read it all in one go, you can really tell how different characters were written by different modders. The writing style (and quality) varies a lot. Annoying as he is, I hope Xan returns to the party to complete his romance thingy. The writing was ok and his obsession with death makes for good foreshadowing, not to mention Syvishtara reacts to it in an interesting way.

I'm really trying to remember in which game you can kill people by standing them in the campfire. It sounds really familiar but I can't place it.

You could also do this to people in the Thief games, although you had to knock them out first and lug their body around. It was like the game had a secondary serial killer mode where you broke into people's houses just to bash them in the head and burn/drown/drop them from a great height.

Anyways, if we can get BillyBob to join the party, my vote is that we sell anything not glued to his body and make him go hug illithids in BG2. :cthulhu:

Cythereal posted:

Doesn't help that BGEE seems to be meeting with a lukewarm reception by the modders themselves. Some are excited about it, more are worried that it will break existing mods and more importantly modding tools, and fracture an already small community. The presence of numerous shills drumming up excitement for the game has not helped, and a considerable number of the modders are worried that this is just a cash grab and that BG3 will just be trying to cash in on the Baldur's Gate name like those BG: Dark Alliance games.

That's interesting, I can imagine a lot of modders aren't looking forward to yet another another round of mod conversions and bug patching. That said, if BGEE retains mod compatibility, the barrier to entry for modded content is going to be much lower than it is now.
I had to reinstall everything yesterday after breaking my installation trying to undo a tweak. (Being stripped of equipment in Spellhold is a cool idea, and so is having Bodhi chase you, but both at the same time are close to impossible, especially when you are trying to memorize spells that might somehow let you kill golems with your bare fists.) It would be nice if I could install just one game instead of 3 games, 2 patches, 2 bugfixing mods, a widescreen patch, BGT and a bodge to get music working.

On the plus side, I decided to try some new content. There are apparently several banter projects for BG2, and they appear to focus on friendships, not romances like BG1's npc project.

Fruits of the sea
Dec 1, 2010

This is perhaps a little cynical, but I think most modding communities exist in a state of perpetual drama. Regardless of competing egos, a lot of modders really love the games they work on and thrive on feedback from the community. I expect many of them will stick around and keep updating/producing new content after the dust has settled. Whether BGEE will compatible is another matter, although the news released so far makes me hope it will be without too many alterations to existing mod content.

Cythereal posted:

The BG1 NPC Project is somewhat misleading when looking at BG2 and its mods. In BG1, characters virtually never interact at all. There are no banters, friendships, romances, etc - that was all an invention of BG2. BG2 mods are significantly more numerous, and generally seek to expand upon existing content or add new characters. The BG1 NPC Project sought to bring BG1 up to where BG2 began, with banters, romances, and dialogue for party members.

You make a good point, it's been a long time since I played vanilla BG and I probably don't remember how sparse it was. BG2 characters just seem quiet compared to the chatty ones from the NPC Project. That shouldn't be a problem in my new game. I'm planning to run through BG2 with Aerie, Edwin, Korgan, Keldorn and Imoen. I'm not sure who will end up dead, but I'll need the extra slot for my good buddy Sarevok. :haw:

I was playing around with the the Wild Magic mod that added Rhialto's spellbook, and it's a lot of fun. There's some really fun content we haven't seen yet which I probably shouldn't mention as it might constitute spoilers depending on what Syvishtara ends up doing. It's gonna be super cool though. If any of you are contemplating doing a wild mage run with the mod, definitely go through the readme so you can plan ahead.

Killing Rhialto with a level 2 party was pretty much impossible, but I was lucky. He turned himself into a squirrel on my fifth attempt. :v:

B - A fast-moving thief/mage has potential especially with some of the illusion spells that you get later on. That said, having squishy characters move faster than the tanks is generally a terrible idea, since they will be the first to trigger ambushes and traps. Either way, we get a show and Vorgen has to deal with the consequences!

I'm just amazed by Syvistara's consistent luck. How was she able to skip the 3-round mental battle with the elemental?

Nahal's dweomer always messes up at the worst possible times for me. I just assaulted the bandit camp in BG1, and my wild mage managed to silence all my casters, kill Tiax with a sunburst and enchant a bandit with protection from arrows. Kagain ended up tanking everything :smug:

Not that I'd mind a ridiculously overpowered runthrough of the final acts.

Fruits of the sea

I'll vote for Illusionist. Imoen loves playing pranks, and that's what illusion is all about, right? It also bars her from using the really evil spells such as Death Spell or Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting. Roasting people with fireballs can be nasty but it isn't evil on the same level as a mage who can snuff out the lifeforce of weaker creatures with a word, or evaporate all of their bodily fluids in an agonizing death.

I don't think Enchanter is a good fit for her since
1. Imoen's already shown enthusiasm for evocation spells like burning hands, so I don't think she has any problem with casting evocation spells.
2. Enchanting is all about controlling people. Imoen seems like more of a trickster who would resort to enchantment if absolutely necessary.

Wild mage would be... interesting, but wouldn't it make more sense for Imoen's wild magic potential to be unlocked by Irenicus' experiments? Just a thought for the future.

I thought the several days long battle with the amazons was pretty awesome. The situation was really desperate, and watching characters die raises the stakes. There's also a big difference between dying in an epic battle, and dying of a lucky hit while grinding repetitive content.

I'm looking forward to the final assault on the bandit camp for that very reason. Even if it doesn't prove difficult, revenge will be sweet. Are we going to get Haiass back? :ohdear:

3-Kerairiera Silverstring Let's see what this special snowflake can do!
